The State Journal-Register: “Musicians Adjust To Cancellations”

Screen Shot 2020-03-24 at 3.19.59 PM

An article in the City State section of today’s State Journal-Register touches on how some local musicians have been coping with shows cancelling in the area (and around the globe) due to COVID-19 and the stay-at-home order. Pictured above and in the article is Micah Walk of folk group Deep Hollow, who also gives guitar lessons and manages to do so now through webcam from his home. Steven Spearie also interviewed local solo artist Ben Bedford about how his upcoming tour dates were cancelled and how he is dealing with the cancellations. From the article:

All of that, woosh, gone,” said Bedford of the shows knocked out by the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. “It makes me slightly nauseous to think of the amount of work and the amount of money that disappeared (from that).”

Now Bedford, who has spent nearly 15 years being a full-time musician, is trying a service called Patreon. For a monthly subscription, Bedford will offer patrons exclusive content not available on his website or other social media platforms, like videos, behind the scene glimpses from his life or songs or lyrics in progress.

Check out a link to the article online right here, or pick up the State Journal Register at your local… grocery store.

Timothy Donavan Russell: “Rest”

a2039949115_10

Maybe now with the stay-at-home order we should start expecting to see more music coming especially from all of the solo musical projects of Springfield, such as solo ambient artist Timothy Donavan Russell! Today we bring you a new album from Timothy – this one is two longer tracks, under the release name Rest. You can find that streaming on the player embedded below. This time Timothy actually has some others joining him on this release, from the bandcamp notes:

1) echo – ft Ted Russell on guitar as discovered on the old Starry Eye echoplex (for our collective histories and ancestors)

2) beginning – ft Garrick Veenstra on voice (for Galileo the Cat and all sentient beings)

Head on over to Timothy’s bandcamp page to download the album at your own price. This is Timothy’s first release on his bandcamp so far this year – we’ve also added this one to our Springfield album archive page bringing us to 11 releases we have kept track of this year so far.

Screen Shot 2020-03-22 at 5.19.22 PM

How’s everyone doing out there this week? Let’s see if we can get the local music news and updates coming this next couple of weeks as the COVID-19 lockdown continues… here is a hot, brand new music video recently released by Springfield artist Satisfy. That is for the song “My Way” and you can check out the video, filmed by Visual Paradise, on the player below. As you can see, the video was shot in downtown Springfield (probably when it was a safer time to go outside). Satisfy is a part of the DB Entertainment collective.

“My Way” is the second track off of the Satisfy album, Take A Deep Dive Into What I Go Through, which was released last year. This video and many other music videos shot over the years are listed on our vids/pics page.

Hospital Job: “Covers”

a4119701438_10

Springfield / Chicago based pop punk band Hospital Job have surprised us all with a release of four new recordings on their bandcamp page under the title Covers. The four songs are different covers of songs originally by Old 97s, Woody Guthrie / Wilco / Billy Bragg, Ryan Adams, and Blaze Foley. Check those out streaming on the player below. These set up covers are also being released for a good cause during these times. From the Hospital Job bandcamp:

Covers of some of my favorite songs. 100% of money collected will go to Direct Relief. I will also match the funds, giving the same amount to Protezione Civile, the Italy national emergency service, so please give if you can.

Head on over to the Hospital Job bandcamp page and pay what you want to go towards the cause.

Hospital Job don’t have any shows lined up… but neither does anybody right now!

Activator Magazine Presents: Bottom Bracket (Video + Interview)

Screen Shot 2020-03-20 at 11.58.10 AM

This one is a little bit of old news, but while we are all cooped up – we’ve got time to dig back up some of that! Going along with the cover of Activator Magazine‘s March issue being Bottom Bracket with an interview about the band’s new album, I Don’t Care Enough To Stay coming out later this month on Rat King Records – Activator also added to their video series and posted some live footage of the band at their house, The CFP, and an interview as well. You can check out that video below.

Of course now, Bottom Bracket’s release show previously scheduled for March 28th here at Dumb Records with Looming, Nectar, and more has been postponed to a later date to be determined. Activator Magazine has also announced they will not be doing a print issue for April due to COVID-19.

Next Activator Print Issue Postponed Until May, Digital “Stay At Home” Issue Coming

82763235_709381229593643_5560579087367405568_o

As all of our local businesses and lives are adapting to the times that we are in, Activator Magazine is also adapting to the times as well and have announced that they will be skipping the month of April for having a physical print copies. From the Activator Magazine facebook page:

So the world is crazy right now. In light of everything going on in relation to COV-19 we’ve decided to not have a print edition of Activator Magazine for April. We’ll move the cover artist for that issue into May. Hopefully we’ll be back with a full regular print issue at that point.

However in its place we are going to release a special digital “Stay and home and listen to music” edition. It’ll have some good content (we’re still figuring out what that’s going to be). We’ll also be working on some Spotify playlists for the Activator community and maybe some fun surprises.

If your reading this and would like to submit anything for this special issue (ie scene reports, poetry, comics, art) shoot me an email at activatormagazine@gmail.com.

Everyone stay safe and healthy and we’ll all get through this crazy time together.

You can continue supporting Activator Magazine online by contributing to their ongoing
Patreon page. Keep an eye on the Activator facebook page as well because there may be things in the works as far as organizing live streaming “shows” happening with Central Illinois bands.
