Levitt AMP Springfield Tonight: Dirty Dozen Brass Band

DirtyDozen-2.jpg

We may have a big punk/hardcore show at Bread Stretchers tonight – but did you also know there is a big free concert going on right through the alley tonight as well as part of the Levitt AMP Springfield Concert Series. This is concert number 6 out of 10 free concerts – just 3 more after this! Tonight is a big concert for the series – The Dirty Dozen Brass Band from New Orleans is making a grand appearance! Here’s a description from the Levitt AMP Springfield page:

Celebrating more than 40 years since their 1977 founding, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a one-of-a-kind experience that the band describes as a ‘musical gumbo.’ The term ‘gumbo is appropriate because—much like the traditional local dish—Dirty Dozen Brass Band seamlessly brings together musical influences across jazz, big band swing, funk and soul to create an electrifying experience that feels like an instant party. The core of their sound is classic New Orleans jazz and swing, which they developed as young musicians playing in churches and the local club circuit in New Orleans itself.

The free concert out on the lawn tonight (and that’s the lawn directly in front of the Governor’s Mansion in between 4th and 5th streets) starts at 6:00 pm and goes until 8:30 pm. There is an opening act and that is local jazz musician Frank Parker.

If you want to see what other Levitt AMP concerts are coming up on the block or learn more, check out their website right here. Find a facebook event for tonight’s concert right here.

Tonight kicks off a run of three shows we have lined up back-to-back-to-back in our space tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday nights. They are all good shows. Tonight we have a pretty good punk show lined up. We have a band from Columbia, Missouri called Slüsk. You just might want to check them out on the player below. We also have a punk band from Omaha, Nebraska coming through. They are called Deadbeat. Who do we have for locals on this show? A new favorite band for a lot of people from right here in Springfield – Blushe is playing. The psychadelic / noise project “Schedule One” will also be playing. And opening things up is the first show of a brand new local band… called “Black Box”. Be sure to show up on time to enjoy and experience it all.

That all starts tonight at 7:00 pm and admission is $5-7. Check out a facebook event for that one right here. Be sure to check out our shows page for a nice full list of everything coming up at Brad’s Stretchers in the near future.

July 26th & 27th at Bread Sheep: Midnight CD Release / Downhome Music Festival Aftershows

downhomeaftershow4.jpg

Get ready because this evening we are going to throw a lot at you for some surprise shows happening at our space later this month. This is a joint announcement for TWO shows happening at our space – BOTH are aftershows for Downhome Music Festival on July 26th and 27th, BOTH are happening right at midnight (crazy, we know), and BOTH are CD release shows for two different local artists. This is just getting too wild. Let’s break it down for each show:

The first night of Downhome Music Festival is Friday, July 26th. There will be a show at our space at midnight that night It will be a CD release show for Dexter‘s new album Weeping Venus. We are excited. You can check out the first song from that album right here. Also playing is Jeff Williams of NIL8. That show is just $3 and it’s all ages of course.

Then the next night is Saturday, July 27th (yes we are aware since we are talking midnight here it would technically be the 28th). For this one we have local grunge rockers Master Bastard‘s CD release for their new album which we have been told is being called Drinking With Children. Also on that show is Taylorville 90’s rock group Stick People, and the brand brand new surf band that’s been making splashes, Snuff Rider. Another $3, all ages show!

Both of those shows are starting right at midnight, both are all ages, and both are $3. We’ll be getting facebook events up for both of those right away. Oh, and no beer in our space for any of those. Sorry. Check out our shows page to see what else is coming up at our space this summer.

The band is The Cult of Lip from Minnesota, and they played there last month on June 18th. You can check out the video of them playing their song “A Glow” embedded below.

Also be sure to check out our “vids/pics” page for a list of pictures and videos (mostly at Black Sheep, but we are working on building up new ones of the new space! Or check out the Dumb Records youtube channel. (Like and subscribe, thank you).

Wow, today we are bringing you a new featured band page of the week for a project that is long overdue for us – and that is for solo electronic / ambient project “Imaginary Colours” by Michael LeFrance that has been going for well over a year now with four different releases. Check out the new page up on our site right here where you can also stream the newest EP, Among The Horizon. We are working on beefing up the bio on the page here soon. Imaginary Colours doesn’t have any shows lined up currently.

Check out any of our 40+ current band pages on our site right here. We are still slowly working on getting this all updated. Do you play in a local original band or are a solo project that has not yet gotten a page set up with us? Email us at dumbrecs@gmail.com and we would love to get something together!

July Issue of Activator Magazine Available Now

IMG_7319.jpg

Maybe we are around one week late in telling you this, but did you know that there is a new issue of Activator Magazine out? We are excited about this one because it features new local band Blushe on the cover – and a photo that was taken in our space! You can pick up the monthly magazine for free in our store and read an interview with the band. This issue Activator also launched a new feature – with the start of a video series with Blushe as the first feature. The magazine interviewed the band in the video and also caught some footage of them playing live in our space as well. You can check that video out below!

Aside from the Blushe interview, you can find: plenty of album reviews, live show calendars, a photospread of Midwest Punkfest XI, more photos of Activator’s birthday show at Dumb Records, a recap of Perimeter Road Music Festival, an interview with Junior Pasáre, an interview with Shawn “Push” Freligh, a story about how some LLCC students created some mobile game called “Floofy”, and much much more.

Last night was amazing! Our most well-attended show at the new location so far! We are keeping the ball rolling with another solid show lined up tonight! Come out out! Tonight we have the mighty return of the mighty might band Jocko from Ohmaha, Nebraska. Jocko played here last at Black Sheep the first night of Dumb Fest 6 for those of you who were around for that a little over one year ago at this point. Stream some of Jocko’s music on the player below if you are unfamiliar. Also on this show is Final Order. Right in the middle we have a curveball and that is local hip hop act Animals With Human Names, playing his first show at Bread Stretchers 2.0. Then we’ve got St. Louis area hardcore group Brute Force coming back to play the Bread Stretch for yet another time. Opening things up is another little curveball with the *chill* solo project of Vincent Sebastian.

All of this starts at 7:00 pm that day and it’s $7 to get in to see five acts. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else we’ve got coming up at Beard Strappers in the near future.

timradioshowpromo\.jpg

We are getting back into the swing of things with having some solid guests coming up on our weekly radio show on 88.3 FM WQNA! This week is going to kick off a long run of some great scheduled guests, with the guest being Tim Smith: organizer behind the new downtown music festival “Abe Fest” which is happening in just two weeks on July 19th and 20th. We’ll be talking with Tim on what that festival is all about, what to expect, as well as playing music from some of the bands playing such as The Smithereens, The BoDeans, and Spoonbenders! Plus we’ll be playing other music by local artists and from shows coming up at our space and around town.

The Dumb Records Radio Show is on today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on 88.3 WQNA FM, and also on that same time online at wqnaradio.org. We are going to be working to get some of our more recent episodes recorded here very soon, hopefully starting with this one today!
