Nil8 started playing basement shows in 1982 doing a few originals and playing covers by THE ADOLESCENTS, BLACK FLAG, CIRCLE JERKS, ADDICTS, NECROS, NEGATIVE APPROACH, DEAD KENNEDYS, MINOR THREAT, SS DECONTROL, BAD BRAINS bit then just started writing more material. Original line up was JEFF WILLIAMS, BRUCE WILLIAMS, GARY SWAGGERY, TERRY WILSON. Originally, Jeff did not sing, Terry sang, though Jeff wrote the songs. There was nooooo way Jeff knew how to play guitar well enough to try to do two things at once. They got offered to play a slot on the ROCK AGAINST REAGAN tour when it had a stop at the old State Capitol…. The other bands on the bill were MILLIONS OF DEAD COPS… and THE CRUCIFUCKS …and yes, in case you were wondering, there was a POLICE PRESENCE to say the least! nil8 then started playing shows in champaign, blomington and charleston… eventually touring across North America with bands like DR KNOW, SLAPSHOT, SLAPSTICK, BLUE MEANIES, AGAINST ALL AUTHORITY, FEAR, Zero Boys, RKL, The Specials, Avail, The Vandals, MU330, Let’s Go Bowling, Less Than Jake, Skankin Pickle, SNFU, Tree, The Trees, Backwards Day, Uncle Tupelo, Good Riddance, AFI, Mindless Self Indulgence, House of Large Sizes, Billy Goat, Pansy Division, Faith No More, Smashing Pumpkins, Braid, Tub Ring, Fragile Porcelain Mice, The Urge, Regatta 69, Skifdank, Alien Sex Fiend, Flaming Lips, Supersuckers, Park, Mudvayne, Captured by Robots, Death by Stereo, The Queers, Brutal Juice amongst others. The most fun tours Nil8 was ever on is toss up between Mindless Self Indulgence, The Vandals and Blue Meanies.
