As we mentioned earlier, there are three major outdoor music festivals happening downtown in the month of July. This includes Legacy of Giving Festival this upcoming weekend, Downhome Music Festival at the end of the month, and Abe Fest the weekend of July 9th and 10th.
Abe Fest might feature the fewest bands out of those three, however the festival might be bringing in headliners which might be the heaviest hitters when it comes to national acts. The festival is being held at the Bank of Springfield Center Plaza, and features headlining act Flock of Seagullson Friday, July 9th and Starship (featuring Mickey Thomas) as the headlining act on Saturday, July 10th. Tickets for each of those dates can be purchased in advance on the Bank of Springfield Center website. For the complete lineup and also more info on the festival, be sure to follow the Abe Fest facebook page.
We just caught word of a new Springfield musical project that put out an album at the start of this month… They are called “Splendid Flunkys” and feature recording artist extraordinaire March Schwartz and also Scott Faingold (Epsom, Heptanes, etc.) as a duo. The two have released a debut album called Throne Room and you can stream all 14 tracks of that on the player below! Also head on over to the Splendid Flunkys bandcamp page where you can purchase the download of the album. And a description from their page:
“Splendid Flunkys is the raw, loud, punkish garage rock brainchild of veteran rockers Scott Faingold (Backwards Day, Epsom) and Mark Schwartz (Forest Saints, Tin Ghost, End Times Trio). With a combination of rib-tickling humor and brutal self- and societal observations, their music is not for the faint of heart. Take a deep breath and enter into the company of the Splendid Flunkys.”
Splendid Flunkys don’t have any plans for any live shows as far as we know. We’ve added this one to our Springfield album archive page, where we definitely have some catching up to do!
Today we bring you a hot new release from Springfield hardcore band Prevention! Four new tracks of heavier than ever hardcore. This new release is entitled What Do You Say NoTo and you can find it embedded on the player below. Head on over to Prevention’s bandcamp page to download the EP at your own price. Prevention also released Your Bad Habits in 2019. They don’t have any shows announced for right now but we hear they will very very soon. What’s that? No, we don’t know anything about them playing anywhere in town last night either.
Between Legacy of Giving, Abe Fest, and Downhome Music Festival there are THREE major outdoor music festivals happening here downtown in July that we know of! Plus there is still the Levitt AMP Music Series out on the y-block still every Thursday night through August 5th! That’s a lot of outdoor live music happening here downtown.
The Legacy Of Giving Music Festival is happening here downtown this upcoming weekend Friday and Saturday July 2nd and 3rd. As you can see on the poster above, there are too many bands playing for us to even list off here. The headlining acts look to be Enamel, The Longmeyer Band, The Station, and This One’s Pink. There are probably about 50 bands listed on that poster playing throughout the weekend. Update – there are actually 60 bands playing 5 different stages for 10 different charities! The festival also features food trucks, a kids area, a vendor fair, a disc golf tournament, and much much more.
We are told to be on the lookout for a band schedule to be released any day now on the Legacy of Giving facebook page. You can also find more information on the festival at logmusicfest.org.
It looks like this will not be a summer without music festivals here in downtown Springfield like last summer was! Legacy of Giving Music Festival is happening in just one week on July 2nd and 3rd this year. Abe Fest is happening on Friday July 9th and Saturday July 10th. Downhome Music Festival is happening later on in the summer (still only one month away), and are ones that have just recently announced their lineup!
Downhome Music Festival is happening Friday and Saturday July 30th and 31st! This festival will feature first time performances since before the pandemic hit for a number of local groups! Big headliners on Friday night include Looming and also Junior Pasare. On Saturday night Solar Chariot and Starwolf are headlining but there are a few other notable acts including Park. Stream some of Looming’s music on the player below!
We are unsure if any time slot or ticket info has yet been released, but you can stay up to date with Downhome going-ons on their facebook page. Holy smokes we are thinking about re-booting our Springfield shows page right now!
Whoops, we didn’t even do a post for Activator Magazine this month! Man, we reallly need to get back on it. By this time we are already re-stocked with our second batch of June issues of Activator Magazine in the store! Activator has recently hit 3 years of being around as a monthly magazine focusing on music and art in Central Illlinois and they are great.
This month’s issue has featured on the cover “Punks In Peoria” – which is a new book and music compilation being released on record and CD by a dedicated group of people whose mission is to document punk in Peoria in the 80’s and 90’s. There is even an upcoming festival in Peoria this early fall featuring some Peoria punk groups reuniting. In addition to a great interview with Punks in Peoria, there is also an interview with Peoria metal group Darker Than Fiction, Springfield power pop group Local Drags, a “10 Up 10 Down” with Knarly Nice, an interview with Springfield rock group Astrofix, Tiara Standage with Intricate Designz, an interview from the archives with Dave Baker about Springfield punk rock in the 1980’s, a photospread for Blue Monday at The Alamo, and an interview with local musician Cameron McClure. The “Dumb Perspective” column is also back where Brian Galecki write about the new exhibit “State of Sound” at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum.
Wow, that was a lot! You can pick up copies of Activator Magazine here at Dumb Records for free as well as other locations around town. Before you know it there will be a July issue out.
The Levitt AMP Music Series continues downtown tonight, with another Thursday night free concert! Tonight it’s country and bluegrass night out on the y-block, and it is the fourth concert lined up in the ten part series that goes on throughout the summer until August 5th. The headlining act tonight is Henhouse Prowlers which can be described as a Chicago bluegrass “powerhouse.” Opening up is Appleton, Wisconson’s DUSK bringing the country. Dusk features members of the band Tenement, who have performed two of our Dumb Fests in the past (2013 and 2015). Stream some of their music on the player below.
All of this kicks off tonight right at 6:00 pm on the Y-block downtown right in-between the governorn’s mansion and our alleyway and is scheduled to go until 8:30pm. We’ll even be closing our store a tad bit early at 5:55pm for this event. If it is raining too hard then this event will be canceled, but lordy heavens lets hope that doesn’t happen. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out a full schedule of other upcoming Levitt concerts, which were made possible by our city receiving a grant through the Levitt foundation plus other local sponsors, right here on levittampspringfield.org.
