Hospital Job: “Covers”

a4119701438_10

Springfield / Chicago based pop punk band Hospital Job have surprised us all with a release of four new recordings on their bandcamp page under the title Covers. The four songs are different covers of songs originally by Old 97s, Woody Guthrie / Wilco / Billy Bragg, Ryan Adams, and Blaze Foley. Check those out streaming on the player below. These set up covers are also being released for a good cause during these times. From the Hospital Job bandcamp:

Covers of some of my favorite songs. 100% of money collected will go to Direct Relief. I will also match the funds, giving the same amount to Protezione Civile, the Italy national emergency service, so please give if you can.

Head on over to the Hospital Job bandcamp page and pay what you want to go towards the cause.

Hospital Job don’t have any shows lined up… but neither does anybody right now!

Activator Magazine Presents: Bottom Bracket (Video + Interview)

Screen Shot 2020-03-20 at 11.58.10 AM

This one is a little bit of old news, but while we are all cooped up – we’ve got time to dig back up some of that! Going along with the cover of Activator Magazine‘s March issue being Bottom Bracket with an interview about the band’s new album, I Don’t Care Enough To Stay coming out later this month on Rat King Records – Activator also added to their video series and posted some live footage of the band at their house, The CFP, and an interview as well. You can check out that video below.

Of course now, Bottom Bracket’s release show previously scheduled for March 28th here at Dumb Records with Looming, Nectar, and more has been postponed to a later date to be determined. Activator Magazine has also announced they will not be doing a print issue for April due to COVID-19.

Next Activator Print Issue Postponed Until May, Digital “Stay At Home” Issue Coming

As all of our local businesses and lives are adapting to the times that we are in, Activator Magazine is also adapting to the times as well and have announced that they will be skipping the month of April for having a physical print copies. From the Activator Magazine facebook page:

So the world is crazy right now. In light of everything going on in relation to COV-19 we’ve decided to not have a print edition of Activator Magazine for April. We’ll move the cover artist for that issue into May. Hopefully we’ll be back with a full regular print issue at that point.

However in its place we are going to release a special digital “Stay and home and listen to music” edition. It’ll have some good content (we’re still figuring out what that’s going to be). We’ll also be working on some Spotify playlists for the Activator community and maybe some fun surprises.

If your reading this and would like to submit anything for this special issue (ie scene reports, poetry, comics, art) shoot me an email at activatormagazine@gmail.com.

Everyone stay safe and healthy and we’ll all get through this crazy time together.

You can continue supporting Activator Magazine online by contributing to their ongoing
Patreon page. Keep an eye on the Activator facebook page as well because there may be things in the works as far as organizing live streaming “shows” happening with Central Illinois bands.

The Illinois Times: “Local Business Owners Face A New Reality”

Grabbabaaba

One thing is for certain, and that is that we are the only ones affected by the coronavirus. Every single person in the entire… globe is probably affected in some way. Safety is most important right now, and lives are at risk.

Things are rapidly changing every day for what our business and other businesses are doing and how people are trying to cope with the virus and practice social distancing. We got the change to speak with Rachel Otwell of The Illinois Times along with other local businesses Graba Java and American Harvest about what we are doing in these times.

Check out that article online right here. From the article:

Back downtown, Dumb Records has canceled or postponed all upcoming shows, and won’t be scheduling more for the foreseeable future. The music store also functions as a performance space. Owner Brian Galecki is focused on selling some of his 6,000-plus vinyl records and CDs online. The operation is unique, as it runs on volunteer support. But it’s how Galecki makes ends meet.

Our online Discogs store can be found right here, and our online storenvy where shirts and more can be found right here. Our physical store is pretty much closed until further notice at this point (we are just here going through records and packing up orders).

New And Upcoming Arrivals At Dumb Records (and Online)

arrivals

It’s Tuesday and while it’s a crazy world we are living in right now, we have still been adding more and more records and CDs to our inventory. We’re still here today to bring you a list of some of what’s new. Our store is *pretty much closed* (we are still here getting work done and mailing orders out), we are expecting all non-essential businesses to be ordered to close any day now. So much of these things listed out can be for sale online on our Discogs page. If you can find something there – send us a message or email to dumbrecs@gmail.com and we will be happy to arrange a curbside pickup for any record, or deliver straight to you. We also have our online merch store of shirts and more up and running right here.

Dumb Records Online Merch Store Re-Launched!

ONLINE

Great news everyone! We are not sure how much of a shirt-buying mood everyone is in after these crazy past few days, but we are preparing to have to close up our store (it has been loosely open today), and enter in online-mode in these new modern times.

We have now launched our storenvy page, featuring a new run of green Dumb Records t-shirts, long-sleeves, and crew neck sweatshirts. Check that out right here. Placing an order and paying online is easy. For those of you in Springfield, we might just deliver them to your mailbox.

Don’t forget we have an online Discogs store as well, where we sell new and used records and CDs and update daily.

Order something from us and we just might throw in a special note or drawing!

CDC Recommending Cancelling Gatherings of 50 or More The Next 8 Weeks, More Show Cancellations Likely

140044286_84f7eadbff_h

Trying our best to stop the spread of the coronavirus certainly is serious business, and unfortunately we for-see some more serious implications coming our way as an all ages music venue. Yesterday we announced that we were pulling the plug on shows from now through the end of March after Governor J.B. Pritzker ordered the closure of all bars and restaurants in that timeframe. After that and also yesterday, the Center for Disease Control issued a new guidance recommending no public gatherings of 50 or more people be held between now and the next eight weeks.

This just about means no shows for us during that time frame as well – things are changing very rapidly on a day-to-day basis with the coronavirus and the state’s response to preventing it. We are not officially cancelling all of the shows we had lined up through 8 weeks (May 10th), but the chances of them happening are looking unlikely. There were previously a total of fifteen shows we had scheduled (some of which were not announced yet) in that time period.

A number of downtown shops are beginning to close as well, we are *loosely* open today and these next few days our normal hours of 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, but everything is changing so rapidly that we are embracing for having to close store. We are continuing to sell music online through Discogs, and will likely be launching a separate store for shirts and other merchandise very soon.
