Downhome Music Festival Announces Lineup For July 30th & 31st

It looks like this will not be a summer without music festivals here in downtown Springfield like last summer was! Legacy of Giving Music Festival is happening in just one week on July 2nd and 3rd this year. Abe Fest is happening on Friday July 9th and Saturday July 10th. Downhome Music Festival is happening later on in the summer (still only one month away), and are ones that have just recently announced their lineup!

Downhome Music Festival is happening Friday and Saturday July 30th and 31st! This festival will feature first time performances since before the pandemic hit for a number of local groups! Big headliners on Friday night include Looming and also Junior Pasare. On Saturday night Solar Chariot and Starwolf are headlining but there are a few other notable acts including Park. Stream some of Looming’s music on the player below!

We are unsure if any time slot or ticket info has yet been released, but you can stay up to date with Downhome going-ons on their facebook page. Holy smokes we are thinking about re-booting our Springfield shows page right now!

Activator June 2021 Issue Re-Stocked!

Whoops, we didn’t even do a post for Activator Magazine this month! Man, we reallly need to get back on it. By this time we are already re-stocked with our second batch of June issues of Activator Magazine in the store! Activator has recently hit 3 years of being around as a monthly magazine focusing on music and art in Central Illlinois and they are great.

This month’s issue has featured on the cover “Punks In Peoria” – which is a new book and music compilation being released on record and CD by a dedicated group of people whose mission is to document punk in Peoria in the 80’s and 90’s. There is even an upcoming festival in Peoria this early fall featuring some Peoria punk groups reuniting. In addition to a great interview with Punks in Peoria, there is also an interview with Peoria metal group Darker Than Fiction, Springfield power pop group Local Drags, a “10 Up 10 Down” with Knarly Nice, an interview with Springfield rock group Astrofix, Tiara Standage with Intricate Designz, an interview from the archives with Dave Baker about Springfield punk rock in the 1980’s, a photospread for Blue Monday at The Alamo, and an interview with local musician Cameron McClure. The “Dumb Perspective” column is also back where Brian Galecki write about the new exhibit “State of Sound” at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum.

Wow, that was a lot! You can pick up copies of Activator Magazine here at Dumb Records for free as well as other locations around town. Before you know it there will be a July issue out.

Levitt AMP Music Series Tonight: Henhouse Prowlers and DUSK

The Levitt AMP Music Series continues downtown tonight, with another Thursday night free concert! Tonight it’s country and bluegrass night out on the y-block, and it is the fourth concert lined up in the ten part series that goes on throughout the summer until August 5th. The headlining act tonight is Henhouse Prowlers which can be described as a Chicago bluegrass “powerhouse.” Opening up is Appleton, Wisconson’s DUSK bringing the country. Dusk features members of the band Tenement, who have performed two of our Dumb Fests in the past (2013 and 2015). Stream some of their music on the player below.

All of this kicks off tonight right at 6:00 pm on the Y-block downtown right in-between the governorn’s mansion and our alleyway and is scheduled to go until 8:30pm. We’ll even be closing our store a tad bit early at 5:55pm for this event. If it is raining too hard then this event will be canceled, but lordy heavens lets hope that doesn’t happen. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out a full schedule of other upcoming Levitt concerts, which were made possible by our city receiving a grant through the Levitt foundation plus other local sponsors, right here on levittampspringfield.org.

Dexter Anodyne: “Dexter Anodyne & The D. Sparrows”

Holy smokes there is a new album here for us to tell you about! This one is from Springfield musician (who maybe moved to Peoria and maybe moved back (?)) Dexter Anodyne. Dexter released her debut album Weeping Venus in 2019 and this one is Dexter Anodyne & The D. Sparrows which features a full band and probably goes in a much different direction than Weeping Venus! Check out the 12-track album streaming on the player embedded below. There is also a track featuring none other than Jeff Williams of NIL8! Head on over to Dexter’s bandcamp page to download the album at your own price and check out more of her music.

Getting this one added to our Springfield album archive page for 2021 lickety-split! We are sure we have some catching up to do on that! Oh hey wow this puts us at 600 releases we have kept track of total!

June Dumb Records Arcade Contest: Bubbles

Are you ready for our next arcade contest?? Here it is… for the month of JUNE we are holding an arcade contest for the game BUBBLES. What is BUBBLES? From the Bubbles wikipedia page:

Bubbles is an action game where the player controls a soap bubble from a top-down perspective. The object is to clean a kitchen sink by maneuvering over ants, crumbs, and grease spots to absorb them before they slide into the drain. As the bubble absorbs more objects, it grows in size, eventually acquiring first eyes and then a smiling mouth. At the same time, sponges and scrub brushes slowly move around the sink, cleaning it on their own in competition with the player. Touching either of these enemies costs a player one life unless the bubble is large enough to have a complete face. In this case, the enemy will be knocked away and the bubble will shrink. Sponges and brushes can be knocked into the drain for bonus points, eliminating them from play. Two other enemies in the sink are stationary razor blades and roaches that crawl out of the drain. Contact with a blade is always fatal, while the bubble can safely touch the roach only while carrying a broom, which will kill the roach with one hit. The broom can be acquired by running over a cleaning lady who appears in the sink from time to time.[1][2]

In our arcade, BUBBLES is the third game on the Joust arcade cabinet. If you are looking to dive further into some BUBBLES tips and tricks before you venture out to our arcade, then check out the BUBBLES thread on our underground pinball forum. How fun!

This contest goes from June 1st through the 30th! Everyone is welcome to play, as long as you pay the $5 entry to the Dumb Arcade (or get entry by spending $10 or more in the store). You can play as many times as you like, just let us know what your high score! For this contest we actually have ELEVEN different prizes for all of the top scorers and this time we are going BIG:

  • 1st place prize: $100 in cash + free entry to our arcade for a month
  • 2nd place prize: your own private party!! *2 hours afterhours on any date
  • 3rd place prize: a bubbles gift basket! + $25 dumb records gift card
  • 4th place prize: a limited edition Bubbles Arcade t-shirt
  • 5th place prize: a lava lamp
  • 6th place prize: a bubbles lawn mower
