Jeff Black (The Radon Lounge) Announced As New Partner of Dumb Records 2020

IMG_0013.jpg

Here we are today with a big announcement of more of our inner workings at Dumb Records headquarters. The big announcement of the end of The Radon Lounge as Springfield’s longest running basement venue left a lot of us hanging with the question of what was going to be next for Jeff Black and those involved with the lounge. Well, if you can believe it… Dumb Records is next for Jeff. Today we are announcing a merging of sorts between us and all of the wonderful elements that The Radon Lounge brought to the table in Springfield DIY Music. Jeff is joining up as a partner in Dumb Records 2020, a year of the future. Here is Jeff’s announcement from The Radon Lounge page:

I’ve always felt Dumb Records is one of the most consistently interesting things happening in town. I’m joining the Dumb Records team in 2020 and will continue hosting monthly shows there.

The main thing for me is giving the Springfield community something different, original, creative, and interesting to experience. one thing I know is if you put a lot of work and time into something, it doesn’t necessarily mean everyone else is going to dig it. Radon Lounge had its last show on Saturday to a super packed crowd and it’s been real exciting to see how many people cared about this weird basement thing I’ve been doing for the last 8 years.

We’re currently planning out some exciting new Dumb projects that I can’t wait to talk about. Although first, we have some less exciting behind the scenes work to get done to ensure Dumb’s future success. And when Brian’s not looking I’ll sneak in a few pinball machines.

One thing I’m definitely looking forward to is putting an address on show flyers. Speaking of shows, mark your calendar for January 19th as that will be my first show as an official Dumb Records boy.

-Jeff

What does this mean for us? Who are all those guys standing up there and what is everyone’s roll in this dumb record store? Yes, you might have seen that Jeff hinted at some pinball machines for us in the future, and we can say that there are a number of exciting projects we have in the works. Jeff’s first show is happening at our space January 19th and we’ll have an official announcement for that one shortly. We’ll just have to keep you posted as we move on into the new year taking on new projects. Maybe we’ll update The Black Sheep history page at some point to include some newer things at our downtown location, which we have been in for nearly a full year now. As always, thank you for everyone’s support!

(Final) Radon Lounge Show Tonight: 6’10”, Idle Oath, The Uh Ohs, David Lasley & Sophia Magruder

Wow, we can hardly believe it but the final ever Radon Lounge show is happening tonight after eight years of the house venue putting on shows in Springfield. We’re not sure what’s next for Jeff and his crew but we’re going to pop on our favorite Christmas sweater and grab a sled and let’s all head over to the lounge tonight. The big act on the bill from Chicago this time is 6’10 (like six foot ten inches), the height of the guy who is in Flatfoot 56 (the band). Stream some of 6’10’s music on the player below. Also playing is Springfield indie duo Idle Oath – they are actually playing at our space the night before for the Springfield Community Broadcasters benefit as well! There’s another group from Chicago on the bill called “The Uh Oh’s” playing music that is supposedly Christmas appropriate.  Opening things up is David Lasley and Sophia Magruder.

That show starts at The Radon Lounge at 7:00 pm and is $5. Don’t know where the Radon Lounge is? You can inquire at radonlounge@gmail.com. Find a facebook event for this show right here. And also be sure to check out our Springfield shows page where we try to list off other shows going on in town but do a bad job at keeping up at it.

The Radon Lounge Announces An End To Shows After 8 Years

78680017_2913627938647715_694331220594524160_o.jpg

An almost completely unexpected announcement came today from our friends The Radon Lounge that they will no longer continue hosting shows at their basement venue after their upcoming Christmas show on Saturday, December 14th. Here’s the short version of the announcement:

Our show on December 14, 2019 will be the last Radon Lounge show, ever.

It’s been a fun ride, 8 years is a very long life for a DIY house venue. I’m also happy to say these years have been entirely incident free and lots of good times. There are no bad reasons why this is happening, only good. Don’t worry as I’ll still be around filling up your feed with show invites as I can’t imagine living my life without shows and pinball.

Aaaand the long version of the announcement which includes a nice history of The Radon Lounge can be found as part of the announcement on their facebook page.

The final Radon Lounge show is taking place on Saturday, December 14th and features 6’10, Idle Oath, The Uh Ohs, David Lasley & Sophia Magruder, and the art of Kristin Diehl on display. Find a facebook event for that one right here.

We’ll be sure to post any updates on announcements regarding future endeavors The Radon Lounge or Jeff Black of The Radon Lounge may be involved with.

Our friends over at The Radon Lounge have announced their big annual Christmas show to take place this year on Saturday, December 14th. We don’t have a show lined up here that night so we can all go! Pop on your favorite Christmas sweater and grab a sled and let’s all head over to the lounge. The Radon Lounge have announced their next show *other than an open mic going on October 25th.* That is on Saturday, November 9th – yes, the same night we have this hip hop show going on, also same day as the grand opening of Good Heart Tattoos. This show at The Radon Lounge features a touring act called “Treadles” from New Orleans, Louisiana. Stream some of their music on the player below. Also on tour is a band called Moss Jaw from the complete opposite end of the country (kinda) – Kalamazoo, Michigan. Are these two bands touring together? We are not so sure! But we do know that there are a solid couple of opening acts including the return of Kate The Band, and also the solo pop artist / maybe full band version of Vincent Sebastian.

This show starts over at The Radon Lounge at 7:00 pm and admission is $5, plus you get free coffee and pinball??? What a deal. To find out more about The Radon Lounge and maybe inquire about their address, check out their website. Also maybe check out our Springfield shows page for a small list of shows happening in town outside of our own space.

September 27th at The Radon Lounge, Homeless Gospel Choir, Mikey Erg, Jon Snodgrass, Looming

Well look-ee here, what do have here. It looks like Springfield basement venue The Radon Lounge have announced the first show of the season for them on Friday, September 27th and it’s a big one. There’s a three-act touring package on this show, and it’s a big deal. On the top is “Homeless Gospel Choir.” That is a touring folk-punk act of some sort from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Right smack dab in the middle of that package is none other than Mickey Erg himself. Mickey Erg is a punk rock drummer who has played for a number of groups including The Ergs, and has just released his second solo album which is streaming on the player below. Then there is some third touring guy, Jon Snodgrass, who comes from St. Joseph, Missouri and also played in a bunch of other bands or something. Opening up this show is another rare performance for big time indie rock / punk band that we all know and love, Looming.

This show starts on that day at 7:00 pm, and admission is $12. Find a facebook event for the show right here. We can’t tell you where the Radon Lounge is, but you can go over to their website to further investigate and they might send you on a scavenger hunt around the city to find their little concert dungeon. It’s Saturday, what’s going on in town tonight? Well, we don’t have anything lined up at Bread Stretchers tonight, but there is this really cool show happening at The Radon Lounge that you should check out if you don’t have anything else going on! This is actually The Radon’s last show for the season! They’ll be back in the fall after this. For this show they’ve got some big NPR featured guy, David Dondero at the top of the bill. Where’s this guy from, Chicago? Stream some of his music on the player below. Radon has got a solid group of local acts this time around as well. This includes Nectar from Champaign and very familiar to Springfield – who just released their album “Knocking at the Door” on LP which we have copies of at Dumb. Bottom Bracket are playing, great. Night Night Boy are playing as well – the second show for the new Springfield supergroup lineup featuring members of Park, Looming, and Soap Scum!

This show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show here. We told Jeff that we’d be doing something as Dumb Records, so we’ll have a couple of crates of choice pick records for sale. Check out our Springfield shows page for other non-Bread Stretchers shows.

April 20th at The Radon Lounge: David Dondero, Nectar, Bottom Bracket, Night Night Boy

What’s going on this weekend coming up around town? Well, we don’t have anything lined up at Bread Stretchers Friday or Saturday (we do have a show Sunday), but there is this really cool show happening at The Radon Lounge on Saturday, April 20th that you should probably know about!

We told Jeff that we’d be doing something as Dumb Records but we are not completely sure what. We think our old man mascot is going to be handing out old 45s to show goers from his trousers, we’ll see. Check out our Springfield shows page for other non-Bread Stretchers shows here.

March 23rd at The Radon Lounge: Otto San, Kid Ziggy, Papa Luke, Jazz Robots, Animals With Human Names

52602369_2378579532152561_6026750199110565888_o.jpg

There are no shows lined up at our space right now (and not even a whole lot in Springfield at all as far as we can tell), so we want to tell you about cool shows still going on at cool places like The Radon Lounge. This one is happening later this month on Saturday, March 23rd at The Radon. It’s their first ever all hip hop show over there! Wow! We are not even familiar with most of these artists. At the top of the lineup is Otto San – is that someone from Springfield? Jeff? Up before that there’s “Kid Ziggy.” We’ve got Kid Ziggy’s soundcloud player embedded below right down there, you can go ahead and have a listen. Looks like Kid Ziggy is in fact from right here in Springfield. Before that is “Papa Luke”, yes from right here in town. Jazz Robots… are playing as well…. from Chicago! Wow! Last but not least is Animals With Human Names who of course we all know. And as usual The Radon Lounge is getting all fancy pantsy with having guest artists and this time it’s art of “Talismen” on display.

This Radon Lounge show starts at 7:00 pm on 3/23 and admission is just five bucks. Find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is going on around town (not a whole lot from what we can tell). Ask about where the Radon Lounge is if you want at radonlounge@gmail.com.

February 16 at The Radon Lounge: We Are Warm, The Randys, Star Stuff, Dexter, Devin Larson

Here’s another show happening not at our space but that’s coming up in town for us to tell you about. It’s Saturday, February 16th at The Radon Lounge and should be a good one. They have this indie / psych rock band coming from St. Louis called “We Are Warm” (we hope that we are going to be a lot warmer than what it’s been like outside these last few days, that’s for sure). You can stream their music on that soundcloud player below. The other full band on the bill is “The Randys” from Lawrenceville, Illinois wherever that is! Where’s Lawrenceville? And who is Randy? Come to the show to find out. Actually there’s another full band, and that is Star Stuff who played their first show late last year at Black Sheep we are pretty sure. Opening things up is the very talented solo act, “Dexter.” In addition to all of this music there will be works on display by local artist Devin Larson as well.

All of this happening at 7:00 pm that night and you can count on there being La Crouix, pinball, probably coffee, probably other stuff. Admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Check out our Springfield Shows page. Check out The Radon Lounge’s website, especially if you don’t know where it is.
