This Sunday morning we are bringing you some new Springfield hip hop! Here is a brand new release by artist “Renegade” aka “Ren” who is one half of the local hip hop duo “The Co-Pilots“. Ren just released an EP of solo material entitled Flowers EP, which you can find streaming on the player below. The EP was released last month and features six brand new tracks. The EP was also reviewed in the October issue of Activator Magazine.

We are not sure of any live shows Ren or The Co-Pilots have lined up at this point. Yes, we are adding this one to our Springfield album archive page which brings us to 45 releases catalogued and featured on our site so far for this year.

Springfield Community Broadcasters (WQNA) Collecting Donations To Continue Community Radio

communityradiotime.jpg

The last few times we’ve reported in on the status of WQNA 88.3 FM, our community radio station that has housed our Dumb Records / Black Sheep Radio Show for nearly seven years, we let you know that the Capitol Area Career Center which houses the station was planning on selling it and the future of community radio in Springfield and our show is very uncertain. We interviewed our station programer Jim Pemberton a few weeks back about a few possible options we have as a group of DJ’s committed to continuing our programing in some way.

Today we are bringing you a massive fundraising campaign that was just recently launched by all of the DJ’s behind the scenes at WQNA 88.3 fm, under a new group we are calling “Springfield Community Broadcasters” which has been holding meetings at Dumb Records.

There has been a GoFundMe page launched which you can check out right here which you can donate to at any point. From the description on that:

A group of community deejays from WQNA are committed to establishing an independent broadcasting presence for community radio. We are currently forming a 501c3 group called the Springfield Community Broadcasters and are pursuing options to ensure the future of community radio in Springfield. Doing this will take money, and donations are needed and appreciated. As we work on our 501c3 filing, we are currently raising money under the umbrella of the Illinois Central Blues Club, which is a 501c3 organization. Donations made toward the future of community radio through the Illinois Central Blues Club are tax deductible.

Additionally, you may drop off donations at Dumb Records at 418 E. Monroe. Many thanks to both the Illinois Central Blues Club and Dumb Records for their assistance. More ways to donate and fundraising events will be coming soon. Stay tuned! Thank you for your investment in the future of Springfield community radio!

Funds are being raised to covering licensing costs, equipment, and other necessary expenses toward establishing a functional community radio non-profit organization in Springfield. You can help us save community radio!

Included in costs that money is being fundraised for is costs to re-locate where the station is housed which is currently out of CACC but will need to find a new home. We will be sure to update you all with progress on this campaign.

In addition to donating on line, you can donate at Dumb Records in person with a cash or check donation, or mail us to 418 E Monroe Street, Springfield IL 62701.

Pay attention, because we are here now to tell you about a pretty sick gig happening on Thursday, November 14th at our space. You’re all invited. This show features Jupiter Styles, which has been making a big splash in the Chicago area and features Sean Neumann (formerly of Single Player, Nectar, Easter, and maybe some other bands that have played at Black Sheep). Stream some of their up and coming big hit album on the player below. Also on this show is the return of Bottom Bracket, back with a brand new lineup or something? We heard a rumor that every single former member of the band has now been replaced with a brand new members from all over the world, we are going to have to see if that is true. Also this is the return of Kate Laine who we have also not seen in a minute! Opening things up is some new group from Alton, Illinois called “Yeah, I’m Sorry.” What kind of a name for a band is that?

This all starts on November 14th at… 7:00 pm and admission is $7. Check out a facebook event right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up this fall.

Screen Shot 2019-10-11 at 7.29.11 AM.png

Today we bring you a video of the band Navel from Japan performing at our space earlier last month. They were a surprise band that we were only able to announce a few days before the show, and have been active playing punk rock since the early 1990’s. This was their first time touring the U.S.A. and we were thrilled to have them as the first band from overseas at our new location. Check out the video embedded below, or go to our youtube channel right here.

Also find more videos from over the years (mostly at Black Sheep) on our vids/pics page.

There is yet another show happening at Springfield house / basement venue “The CFP” this fall! It is happening on Monday, November 4th. For those of you who do not know, C.F.P. stands for The Crappy Flappy Pancake house. The touring act on this show is Nonconnah, they are a shoegaze duo from Hickory Withe, Tennessee. You can stream some of their music on the player below! This one is going to be a rare show for solo ambient act “Pretend I’m Not There.” Also a very rare show for experimental / electronic / ambient solo act, Imaginary Colours. Also on the bill is solo act “Belle” from Champaign/Urbana.

This show starts on November 4th at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5-7. We can’t tell you where The CFP is located, sorry! Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our Springfield shows page, which probably isn’t very updated right now! Whoops!

The Dixie Narcos: “Tinder Folk”

Psychadelic Rock group The Dixie Narcos based out of Jacksonville Illinois are back with yet ANOTHER album! Amazing!! This is their second album to be released this year, and it is called Tinder Folk, and you can find it streaming on the player below. It’s a whole thirteen tracks. Check out their Spotify page where you can also hear it all. Or find the album right here on bandcamp. According to Spotify this is the band’s seventh full length album (we could be wrong on that), and even according to their facebook it looks like they are working on yet another album.

The Dixie Narcos also released the album Soda Pop earlier this year. They played one show inside of our show space earlier this summer and as far as we know it’s the only show the band played this year?? A band that has released more full length albums than shows they’ve performed live?? We are adding this one to our Springfield album archive page, bringing us to 43 releases featured on our site so far this year.

November 9th at Dumb Records: Mac Xavier, Satisfy, King Deezy, Unk + More

We’ve got another show coming up in November – this one is also one month from now on Saturday, November 9th. It’s a hip hop show featuring a group of artists all of which have never played at our space before. The headlining act here is an artist by the name of Mac Xavier, who was originally based out of Springfield but has since moved to Georgia. You can check out his music streaming on the player below. The poster has three other artists listed from the area. One of those includes “Satisfy.” It also includes…. King Deezy. And… “Unk”?! We can’t find Unk on the internet. Plus it looks like there’s more!

The poster says something about a VIP package but we told the promoters in this case that we are not really sure how that would work or make sense with our record store setup and being open all day before the show. Oh well. General admission for this show is $10, and let’s go ahead and say it starts shortly after 7:00 pm. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out our show page for a good look at what else is coming up at our space in the near future!
