November 2019 Issue Of Activator Available at Dumb

IMG_0194.jpg

Wow, and whoops! We can’t believe that we are already nearly halfway through another month over here. We were a little late in getting our fresh stack of Activator Magazine in this month, but now we have them, and we are telling you about them. This is actually the biggest issue of local music free publication Activator Magazine yet, with the most pages (40 or something)!

This time around featured on the cover is long-running Champaign-based indie rock group Elsinore, who recently put out a new album called A Life In The 21st Century. You can read more on that and an interview with them by picking up a free copy of Activator Magazine today! In addition to that there are the regular album reviews, and show calendars, but also an interview with Melody Jane Wachel and Amber Skies about diversity in DIY music, an interview with Sean Neumann of Jupiter Styles, Asa Dawson, photos of Pygmalion Music Festival, an interview with The Homeless Gospel Choir, a Hollowicked Recap, interviews with Wild’ Out and K3hlab, and much much more. Wow, that’s packed.

Activator Magazine can be found at Dumb Records for free at all times and a bunch of other spots around town. Check out their online Patreon campaign and consider donating to keep it going right here!

State Journal-Register: “A Record Deal: Woman Says ‘Yes’ Among The Vinyl”

IMG_9932.jpg

Our store was once again in the newspaper today because the press just can’t get enough of us. This time it wasn’t about anything we have been in the paper about before – The State Journal Register has us featured inq a small article in the City/State section for a surprise marriage proposal which took place in our store early Sunday! The article was published along with this photo – “Andy Krisak, right, proposed to Cori Claycomb, left, by spelling out “Cori, will you marry me?” over five different vinyl record sleeves and hiding them among the stacks of records at Dumb Records.” We posted a video of the proposal as well to our facebook page yesterday.

Pick up a copy of The State Journal-Register while you still have time to today, or check out the article online right here.

November 29th at Dumb Records: Black Friday Record Store Day 2019 + Show

BlackFriday_AlmostFinal.jpg

We have a whole LOT to tell you about Black Friday Record Store Day this year, coming up QUICK – in less than three weeks!!! This is usually the second busiest day for sales in our store, right behind the actual Record Store Day that happens in April. We do have a number of exclusive releases coming in this year – however the amount we were able to order is a little limited, so we have a few other things planned to make a trip out to our store the day after Thanksgiving worth it.

For Black Friday Record Store Day – our store opens at 8:00 am on this day. Feel free to wait in line earlier if you really really want to. We will have free coffee and donuts.  Everything in the store other than the exclusive releases will be 25% off. This is the first time we have ever done a sale in the new store. We are expecting to have a fresh run of shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and zip-ups in time for this day! We also expect to have gift cards available for the first time at the new store! We are also going to be putting out at least a hundred extra used records into the store for the first time! Wow! We will also have a few record players for sale!

Then there is a show happening at 7:00 pm that night at our space with five acts. This includes Kate The Band, who we all know and love. This also includes “Pretty Pleased” – a guy from Chicago whose music you can find streaming on the player below. Right smack dab in the middle is Ricki Marvel (formerly Eric Marvel), playing some of that electronic new wave music. Before that is… Animals with Human Names! Playing some old school hip hop after he gets done perusing our hip hop section in the store and taking advantage of that 25% off sale. Opening things up is Kenyon DeShasier playing some sweet sweet and refreshing indie pop.

Yes. Find a facebook event for all of that right here. Also check out our shows page where we keep a list of everything that’s coming up and going on.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Mac Xavier, Satisfy, Spiff & Tha Kid, King Deezy, Unk + More

It’s a busy weekend going on right now! We have a big hip hop show featuring a group of artists all of which have never played at our space before, it’s also the official grand opening celebration for Good Heart Tattoos right next door to us kicking off at noon.  There is even a pretty great show going on over at The Radon Lounge tonight as well! For us, tonight the headlining act here is an artist by the name of Mac Xavier, who was originally based out of Springfield but has since moved to Georgia. You can check out his music streaming on the player below. The poster has three other artists listed from the area. One of those includes “Satisfy.” It also includes…. King Deezy. And… “Unk”?! We can’t find Unk on the internet. Plus it looks like there’s more!

The poster says something about a VIP package but we have been told by the promoters that that is taking place at a different location here in town instead. General admission for this show is $10, and let’s go ahead and say it starts shortly after 7:00 pm. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out our show page for a good look at what else is coming up at our space in the near future!

We are back! With another exciting episode of The Dumb Records Radio Program today, and this time we actually have a guest for the first time in a few weeks. That is Benny DeWitt, owner of our new neighboring business here downtown on Monroe Street – Good Heart Tattoos. Good Heart Tattoos is holding a grand opening celebration all day tomorrow starting at noon, right next door to us at 414 E Monroe Street. We’ll be talking with Benny about his new shop, as well as maybe some music and show related things and memories from over the years. (Benny used to perform in bands Renae, Mother Leopard, and Hospital Job and currently performs with Layers).

The Dumb Records Radio Show airs today and every Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on 88.3 WQNA fm until things potentially change with the station. Stream it online as well at wqnaradio.org. There is an ongoing fundraising campaign to keep our show and other programing on WQNA and community radio alive. Consider donating to that right here. We also have been keeping a lis of recorded past episodes up on our mixcloud page.

We are kicking off the weekend tonight at the Bread! Tonight we’ve got a hardcore show going on at our space. It features the return of Outcast from Kentucky (and no, it’s not the Outkast you are thinking of, ha ha). Outcast played at Black Sheep a year or so back. Check out their music streaming on the player below. Yes, we also have Springfield straight edge youth crew band Prevention on the lineup. Any fans of metal out there or metalcore? Good, because we have the band “Polterguts” from St. Louis as well. Opening things up is the new wild, fast, AND crazy band, Black Box.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $7. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up in the near future at our space.

Greetings! Here is a show happening here in exactly one month for us to tell you about today. This is happening on Saturday, December 7th. We have the band “Best Sleep” returning from Indiana. Best Sleep last played… actually right here at Dumb Records back in June. The first touring band to come back to our new space a second time around?? Stream some of their music on the player below. We also have Bottom Bracket, we hear this time around with a brand new lineup?? Also on this show is a newer Central Illinois group called “Us” (wasn’t there a movie of that same title recently out)? Up before that is “Layers” – the spoken word / musical duo featuring members of Good Heart Tattoos right next door to us. Opening things up is Zach Goriszewski formerly of the band Kickstart.

This show is another 7:00 pm, $7 show. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what’s coming up at the Bread Dumb Records Theatre.

74530290_2748125991893246_1046399413653602304_n.jpg

Here we are coming to you today once again with yet some more brand new local music!! This time it’s a full album from hip hop act “Satisfy“, going to be performing at Dumb Records for the first time this upcoming Saturday, November 9th. Satisfy’s new album is called Take A Deep Dive Into What I Go Through, and we have some of it streaming on the youtube player embedded below. Find links to what other platforms the album is streaming on through Satisfy’s website right here.

You bet that we’ve got this album now listed on our Springfield album archive page! We are coming up on the end of another year, so we will be getting ready for a year end poll not before long. The show at Dumb Records on Saturday night starts at 7:00 pm and also features Mac Xavier, Spiff The Kid, and more acts. Satisfy and those acts are also playing this Friday night (November 8th) at The Incubator downtown.

The Telephone Junkies: ” Courage Does Not Exist in This Dojo, Does It?”

Screen Shot 2019-11-06 at 12.22.12 PM.png

Central Illinois group The Telephone Junkies have released a brand new hit single. The song title is too long. It is called “Courage Does Not Exist in This Dojo, Does It?.” You can find the song streaming on the player below. We can’t figure out if that is a picture of the Lauterbach Man, but we don’t think it is. Purchase the song to download on their bandcamp page. This song might possibly be on an upcoming album The Telephone Junkies have been working on.

The Telephone Junkies don’t have any shows lined up in Springfield currently as far as we can tell, however they are playing one on November 16th at the “Cooperative” according to their bandcamp page.
