Tonight at Dumb Records: Black Box, Judy & The Jerks, Bigg Band, Fornicators, Oh Gosh

modernflier_final1

Tonight is the first show of the new year! The year 2020, the year of the future. This one features a stacked lineup, two touring bands from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. One of those includes Judy & The Jerks – who played at Dumb Fest 5 in 2017 for any of you that can remember back that far. Stream Judy & The Jerks’ newest release on the player below. They will be on tour with a project called “Bigg Band” which we have been told is actually a really big band. Oh, and also we should mention that we have Springfield fast hardcore band Black Box on the bill. Also on the bill is a brand new St. Louis band featuring members of Mala Leche and Lumpy & The Dumpers called “Fornicators.” Opening things up is the second show ever for new Springfield band “Oh Gosh.”

This all starts at 7:00 pm and door admission is $6.99, maybe a new door standard for the future? We will see. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. And be sure to check out our shows page to see what else is coming up at Dumb Records in the year 2020.

Oh well big whoops, we have not officially announced this show on our site yet. This is going to be a big one because it’s the first show at our space that Jeff Black of The Radon Lounge is involved in setting up since he’s joined our team. This one is happening on Sunday, January 19th at Dumb Records. This one features two touring acts, and some surprises. The touring act at the top of the bill is Slow Mass from Chicago. This band features members of bands that have performed at Black Sheep over the years, and you can listen to some of their music on the player below. The other act is a duo called Turtledoves from Cincinnati Ohio, featuring two members that were a part of the band Soil & The Sun, which Jeff had booked at Radon Lounge before. For locals… wow, what is this we have the band Mother Leopard back from the dead from the year 2009. Also from 2009 and even earlier than that is Kirk Donely of the bands The Transatlantic and Sealife?!? (Okay, he currently plays in The Dandelion Pickers).

This whole show starts at 7:00 pm on that day and it’s $7 admission. Mark your calendars. Here is a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at our space in the near future.

Sonic Maximizer: “Murphy Brown”

Springfield / Taylorville American Surf Rock band “Sonic Maximizer” (recently changed from “Snuff Rider” after an ongoing lawsuit with a German 80’s pop project of the same name), have released a brand new song and video out online. The song is called “Murphy Brown” and you can check it out on the band’s facebook page right here. Sorry, but we aren’t going to even try to embed the facebook player below, we hadn’t had any luck the last time we tried doing such a thing.

Sonic Maximizer don’t have any live shows lined up with as far as we know, however this song does come from an upcoming album of theirs to be released later this year.

Deezy Da Paperboy – “The Race”

Are you ready for all of the new local music that’s about to be coming out in the year 2020?! We haven’t even posted the results from our best of 2019 series yet! Local rapper Deezy Da Paperboy looks like is taking on an ambitious task of releasing a new song and video every single week of this year every Friday starting today with this song and video entitled “The Race.” You can check that out on the player embedded below. The video was shot and edited by Jayy Wills Entertainment.

We’ve included this one in our long list of music videos from over the years by local artists on our vids/pics page. Deezy Da Paperboy just recently performed at our space a week or so ago as part of a recent benefit for Springfield Community Broadcasters.

It features hardcore/metal group from Lansing, Michigan called “Dead Hour Noise.” Stream one track from their upcoming album on the player below. For this show we get local hardcore band Final Order at the top of the bill closing out the night. The one other out of town band is Portals, the Central Illinois metal/deathcore group. And ahhhh, opening up we have the second gig ever for the new solo black metal project from here that everyone has been talking about Gargantuan.

In Memoriam: Noah Guerrettaz (Dumb Records Volunteer)

IMG_3903.JPG

We are saddened to learn of the passing of one of our former volunteers at Dumb Records, Noah Guerrettaz (1999-2019) towards the end of this past year from health complications. Noah had been a dedicated volunteer in our store at our older location from 2015 through 2018 at the time of our move downtown. Noah was also a show attendee, and was a musician himself although he kept all of his recorded music mostly to himself and a few of those close to him. Some of Noah’s family lived in Flora, Illinois where a funeral mass was held at the end of November. His obituary can be found right here.

Noah was also working at Dumb Records the night we took in our store cat, Pepperoni Pizza, who wandered into a show at Black Sheep as we were setting up on September 10th, 2018.

The Vachel Lindsay Legacy Presents Art Show at Dumb Records January 11th

79023204_127125975404445_9011785669927763968_n.jpg

Today we are letting you know about the first art show going on in our space in the new decade, and the year 2020! This one is being put on by our friends over at the Vachel Lindsay Legacy. It is being called “Fund The Dumb Future” for some reason, we are not really sure why this is a benefit for our store, but we guess that’s what Vachel wants. From the facebook event:

In the spirit of Vachel Lindsay who wrote, “the things most worth while are one’s own hearth and neighborhood,” artists from all over Springfield are coming together to raise money for Dumb Records by throwing a big party! Beelzebunz will be selling delicious and homemade baked goods, the Baristie Boys will be there to warm up the winter with their locally roasted coffee, and artists and musicians in droves will be setting up and selling their art!

In addition to all of that, here are all of the artists involved:

Kristin Diehl
Azia Donovan
Will Redwood
Severyn Beekman
Aubrey Puyear
Devin Larson
Amber Autumm Mystlinski
Cheryl Stelle
Bri Skeels
Xea
Hannah Siehr
Dani Sakach
Clare Frachey
Staunzie Grady

And to add some atmosphere to this art show, Kate Laine, Vertrell Yates, and Xea will be performing their beautiful music. Of course, Dumb Records will have all the finest records for sale. To chronicle the thrilling night of music, food, art, community, and, well, Springfield, Cass Wulf Photo Co. will be photographing the event!

How have we managed to fit so much amazingness into one night? Easy. Springfield came together in the spirit of it’s DIY artist forefather, Vachel Lindsay, as a community to build this event into something special by applying Vachel’s “New Localism” which encourages communities to unify and grow together.

Admission is free but we will be collecting donations for our friends at Dumb Records to help with their rent. See you there!

“Springfield awake, Springfield aflame!”

All of that is scheduled to go on right now from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on January 11th, wow that is a heck of a lot of stuff scheduled to go on for two hours. Find a facebook event for this one right here.
