Jessica Knight, Brandon Carnes Introduce “First Try Sessions”

Screen Shot 2020-05-13 at 11.32.34 PM

Looks like amidst this global pandemic and stay at home order, some amazingly positive things are coming into fruition in our local music community. Earlier this week Jessica Knight and Brandon Carnes of the band Looming launched a new project called “First Try Sessions” with the goal of acquiring guitars for children ages 7-17 “and curate music lessons for them in hopes of encouraging a future full of knowledge and creativity.” Amazing! There isn’t a whole lot to the newly created Firsttrysessions.com but you can find their mission statement and a link to donate to the project there.

Along with announcing the project, the duo also released a 16-track album of covers up on bandcamp set to a name-your-own-cost download with the proceeds going towards First Try Sessions. You can also find that streaming below.

We are excited to report back with more news on this project later on and the positive things it may bring!

Happy Mothers Day everyone. Today we bring you some more new local music during these times of quarantine from another local solo project. That is yet another album by Tin Ghost, the solo project of Mark Schwartz, who also performs in End Times Trio, and has other projects by the names of Demons on Wheels, and Forrest Saints, and his latest release was just a solo album, Mark Schwartz on Guitar. This new Tin Ghost album is called Galleons of Time and it is a whopping 19 tracks. Find a player for this one embedded below, or head over to the Tin Ghost bandcamp page where you can purchase the download of the album.

We are also adding this one to our Springfield album archive page, bringing us to release number 17 that we have kept track of so far this year.

May Issue of Activator Magazine Available (We Are Sending With Orders)

1CA27346-D54A-4133-8B53-35CCB200124F

It’s another month, and another issue of Activator Magazine is here – and this time the print issue is back! Of course this month is different, with our physical store and many other locations Activator is usually available for free being closed. We plan on distributing the magazine ourselves by sending it out with most of our curbside pickup and delivery orders while we have copies available! Some other local spots are doing the same (check the Activator facebook page), there is also a newsstand outside of Penny Lane that has free copies that you can pull up and grab.

This issue features local musician Dexter Anodyne on the cover. It also features various interviews with local musicians on what they are doing during this pandemic while normal live shows aren’t an option. There are also album reviews, more interviews with Square of the Roots, Rings, Stick People, Courtboy, and much more. No live music calendar this time around though, sorry.

The “Restore Illinois” 5-Phase Plan And What It Might Mean For Us

Screen Shot 2020-05-07 at 11.34.47 AM

Earlier this week our governor and neighbor through the alleyway, JB Pritzker issued a detailed 5-phase plan to re-opening the state following the spread of the pandemic, called “Restore Illinois.” The full plan can be found right here on the state’s coronavirus response website.

Out of these 5-phases, we are currently on phase 2, and switched over to that phase at the start of this month. What does phase 2 mean for our store and venue space? Just that we are officially able to do deliveries and curbside pickup for orders as a non-essential business, which we are currently doing.

Phase 3 is the next phase, and that happens once the number of coronavirus cases has been stable or declining. For us, this phase means non-essential retail shops (our record store) can open back up. The earliest this phase can happen is May 29th. Also in this phase gatherings of people are limited to no more than 10. (So, we would also probably limit the number of people in our store to that).

Phase 4 happens when the number of patients being admitted to hospitals continues to decline. It is looking like the earliest this phase may happen right now is the end of June. That is when bars and sit-down dining in restaurants can open back up. Gatherings of 50 or fewer people are permitted at that point.

Phase 5 is the last phase and that only happens once there is a vaccine or highly effective treatment available. It’s very unclear how far off that may be. Once we are at this phase we can finally officially have live music events or festivals with no restrictions on gatherings of people.

While this mapping out of phases is a good thing to have, and gives us a look at what we have to look forward to – we are still going to make careful consideration on re-opening our store and venue on our own after each phase is hit. Wether or not we can “technically” have shows might be in question once we are in phase 4, but it might be safest for us to wait until we are in phase 5 to make that call ourselves. These are still uncertain times for us, and we want to make the best decisions we can moving forward with safety in mind.
