October 20th at Black Sheep: Chad Jeffers Memorial Show

On Saturday October 20th, the day after Hobgob, Black Sheep will be hosting a memorial benefit show to honor the life of Chad Jeffers.  Chad was involved in the Springfield Hardcore scene, through helping out on guitar in Pound for Pound and also taking pictures of the band.  Bands playing the benefit show include Pound for Pound, New Society of Anarchists, Soy City Stranglers, and Kick To Tha Head.  Kick To Tha Head will be playing a rare reunion show.  Money raised from the show will either go to the Gateway Foundation, or to the family of Chad.

Old Pound for Pound member Eric Fromm had this to say:

Come celebrate the life of Pound For Pound guitarist Chad Jeffers who passed away last month. Chad wrote a number of Pound For Pound’s songs and was also responsible for many of the band’s photos before and after his time on guitar.

A facebook event for the show can be found here.  A list of other upcoming events at Black Sheep can be seen on our shows page.

We are very very excited to announce this upcoming October show featuring experimental indie pop artist Gardening, Not Architecture and the Portland DIY post-rock exploders Yards. Gardening, Not Architecture features the punk celebrity Sarah Saturday. Sarah has had her hands in the underground for years now. Not only was the she instigator for Earn It Yourself and a full time member of Van’s Warped Tour, she’s also been touring regularly with one of her projects since 2003.

Though the details are still slim on the show, it will be a very good one. We will keep you informed as soon as details are available.

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored: Park “Mood Ring” 7″

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored, music blog featuring Springfield local releases from the 1990s and beyond has recently featured an old 7″ from the Springfield band Park.  The “Mood Ring” 7″ was Park’s first ever 7″ and it was released in 1997 on Sam The Cat Records.

…I have two copies of this 7″.  The 2nd one I got for free when I bought at t-shirt at the show Park played with Yellowcard at the old Rise (previously the Asylum) back in the early 2000′s.  I was handed a 7″ when I bought a “No Signal” shirt (that I still wear from time to time) and I told Justin, who handed it to me, that I already have one and I don’t need a 2nd one.  He told me, “Um…just keep it man…comes free with the shirt and we have tons of these we need to get rid of.”

– Anthony of S.T.C.B.I.

You can check out the Mood Ring 7″ post (and also download the files for free) here.  Some of the members of Park have gone on to form a new band by the name of Tiger Tank, and they will be playing their first show in Springfield on October 19th for this year’s all ages Hobgoblinspookadelic.

The show will take place Saturday, October 20th (the day after Hobgob).

Emperor Norton Recording in BXS/Exclusive Track Debut

Over this past weekend, Springfield skate thrash outfit Emperor Norton set up shop and recorded a demo. They spent the day tracking the 12 song demo, which I think clocks in under 10 minutes (don’t quote us on that). Emperor Norton’s Twitter page kindly supplied some pictures of the good times.

As the great dudes they are, Emperor Norton has decided to let us exclusively stream one of the newly recorded songs. Listen to the track “Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Socks” below:

Emperor Norton is playing this Saturday at Tin Can Pub. Scott Blacula is releasing their demo at the said show. It starts at 11pm, and is $5. Want more info of Springfield shows? Check out the Springfield show page.

Calling All High School Newspapers!

Well, hello there. I didn’t hear you come in.

Black Sheep is wanting to experiment in the advertising game. What better way to do that than in the area schools paper? That is where you all come in. We have tried our darnedest to get in touch with high school newspapers, but have had very little luck.

If you go to a high school and it has a newspaper, we would love to get in contact with the people who run it. If you have any information that points us in the right direction, please email it to blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com. Any little bit of info will help!

October 27th at Black Sheep: 2nd Art Show!

Though the details (like artists, times, set up, etc.) are currently slim, more info will arise. As always, we will fill you in when we know more!

If you are interested in participating, please contact Cody Jones at Cjones127@hotmail.com.

60 Year Old Checks and Receipts Uncovered During Deep Clean

During the Black Sheep Deep clean two weeks ago (and ongoing) our team of cutting-edge scientists and paleontologists were working hard to savor any artifacts that could be found among the rubble.  There were old encyclopedias, plenty of bouncy balls, old fliers, plenty of loose change, and even an oven.  The oldest find would probably have had to been these old checks from the years 1952 and 1953.  They come from a time when Black Sheep was a jewelry store and Harry S. Truman was president.
