Tonight is a night of celebration around South Town, and we are celebrating Black Sheep being nine years old as an all ages venue in Springfield (starting in 2005). We have a great lineup of local bands tonight and that includes Caterpillar Club featuring Black Sheep owner Kevin Bradford. We also have a big reunion show for old powerviolence project HK47. Check out an old video of them playing in a carpeted Black Sheep below. Also on this show is Central Illinois melodic hardcore band Loses The Mighty. Opening things up is hardcore punk band Asthma.

The show tonight starts at 7:00 pm and costs $5. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also don’t forget to check out our long list of upcoming shows on our shows page as Black Sheep enters our tenth year of being an all ages venue.

Teen Freak: “Succubus”

teenfreakdigitalart

Today we are bringing a very special stream from a band that formed from Black Sheep’s first ever band lotto that we hosted earlier in August. The band is called Teen Freak and features members of bands RDNT, Looming, and Soap Scum. The band is streaming their first ever song called “Succubus.” You can check that out here on bandcamp or also streaming below.

Along with the stream, the band is also announcing that they will be releasing their demo cassette on September 18th (one week from today) through Rat King Records based out of Champaign/Urbana. The cassette will be available at the show at Black Sheep with Secret Tombs, JAG, and F///\\\M, and also at Dumb Records.

September 28th at The Radon Lounge: Empires, Sick/Sea, Phoenix Sons

facebook-poster-sept-showSome very cool things are happening all over Springfield this fall. The Radon Lounge just announced their next show happening on Sunday, September 28th. They will be hosting the indie rock band Empires from Chicago. You can check out one of the band’s videos embedded below. The show will also feature Sick/Sea from Texas. Then the show will have some local support from Springfield project The Phoenix Sons.

Lumpy & The Dumpers: Spaghetti Pit @ Black Sheep

spaghetti1

On Friday, September 5th Black Sheep saw a mess like one there has never been before. Some sticky culprits somehow managed to sneak pockets full of green spaghetti into the show, and the spaghetti made an appearance while Lumpy & The Dumpers were trying to perform on stage. We have not yet caught whoever did this, but our forensics team is hot on a trail of clues right now and will be sure to catch the spaghetti havoc-causers. Today we do have a good batch of photos and a video from the spaghetti-pit that broke out during the Lumpy & The Dumpers set. You can check those out above and below, or find some more on our flickr photo stream.

The Buzz: “Records Relocated”

nathan-landolt-error-records

This past week Champaign/Urbana weekly newspaper The Buzz featured a nice cover story on Dumb Records sister record store now located in Urbana, Illiniois, Error Records. The article is an interview with Nathan Landolt of Error Records (and also co-owner of Dumb Records). Error Records recently moved their location to Urbana. The new location features a record store, music venue, practice space, and skate shop much like our South Town Springfield setup. From the article:

Our previous location was just kind of secluded. It was not exactly easy to get to. It was not really out of the way; it just was not convenient for people. That and the building was pretty old, so we wanted to get out of there. Then we heard this building and space was opening up and it’s a downtown location, which is much better. Also, I think that Urbana is much more progressive, and they have welcomed us with open arms, asking all these questions about if I was actually going to do it or not, so it was really nice to feel welcome.

September 26th at Black Sheep: Big 6, Habilis Riccardo, #2LiveNation, DB Cooper, Mikey Hash

bigsdancnde

Looks like another great hip-hop show is being lined up before this month is over. That’s right, this one is on Friday, September 26th and features a lot of great hip-hop and rap artists that we have had play at Black Sheep in the past. This is also some sort of a birthday show for Dancin’ Dave, so that probably means that we will all be dancin’! On this show we have Victor Bacon, who also goes by the name Big 6. Then we have Habilis Riccardo, who has played at Black Sheep before. Other Black Sheep veteran performers include D.B. Cooper and Mikey Hash. Topping it off we have a performance by an act going by the name “#2LiveNation.” You can probably expect some sort of giveaways, food, and more at this show.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep.

punkrockcookoutput2

Food, food, and more food. That’s what’s going on tonight at Black Sheep for our second annual punk rock cookout, and this time we are having all of you eat all of that food. We have told that there will be hotdogs and veggie-dogs for everyone, greens, maybe even some pasta? Black Sheep is cleaned up and ready to go with a new piano and all for this great event happening tonight. Bands playing the cookout include The Timmys, who recently released a brand new EP which you can stream on the player below. We also have the band Minor Decline coming from Galesburg, IL. Then we have Springfield ska-favorites, Bad Banshee. Also don’t miss Say Something– a great punk rock band for a great punk rock cookout.

The cookout tonight starts at 6:00 pm outside of Black Sheep and bands will begin at 7:00 pm. Admission is just $5 for a bunch of bands and a bunch of food (to eat). You can find a facebook event for tonight’s show right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this fall.
