Illinois Times: “Performing In A Pandemic”

Dumb Records co-owner Brian Galecki was / is one of many members of the music and arts community in Springfield featured in an article that came out within this past week in the Illinois Times called “Performing In A Pandemic.” Rachel Otwell put the piece together touching base with a lot of music art spaces in town and what they have been doing while “normal life” or normal live shows are still somewhat on hold. You can find the entire article online right here, or by picking up a copy of The Illinois Times at various locations around town for free. Also featured in the article is The Hoogland Center For The Arts, The Legacy Theatre, Springfield Dance, Springfield Ballet Company, UIS, CAMP, DSI, the Springfield Area Arts Council, and more.

From the article regarding the upcoming Levitt AMP series for 2021:

Downtown Springfield Inc. (DSI) is planning for an outdoor concert series this year. It will be free to attend. In 2019, DSI secured its first Levitt AMP grant to host outdoor concerts on the Y block. It again got the grant for 2020, but the series was canceled. DSI recently learned it is guaranteed a Levitt AMP grant for 2021 as well as 2022.

DSI director Lisa Clemmons Stott said the plan is to create pod seating arrangements, where families and groups of up to six people sit together, but wear masks when not in their own socially distanced area. It’s too soon to announce a lineup, Clemmons Stott said. “Right now we’re looking to expand our partnerships and looking to expand the number of sponsors.” She said the 2021 venture will be more expensive to produce than it had been in 2019, with the goal for sound to cover the entire block where people will be spread out.

March 2021 Activator Available Now

Great news everybody, we once again have the new issue of Activator Magazine! It’s March 2021. This issue features local singer/songwriter Arlin Peebles crawling out of a snowy cave.

In addition to the interview with Arlin Peebles – this month continues to feature a column by Dumb Records co-owner Brian Galecki called “Dumb Perspective” exploring some Central Illinois local music history. This time it’s about Golden Voice Recording Co. which existed from 1966-1978 and some other stuff. This issue also features plenty of local and non-local music reviews, an interview with new Springfield band The Lovelorn, an interview with Derrick Streibig, a “soundcheck” section checking up on local musicians, and much much more.

Pick up a copy of Activator Magazine for free at Dumb Records or other locations around town! We have some back issues available as well! Also check out the Activator Patreon page and consider donating!

Drew Kodrich Compiles / Launches “MIDWEST-HARDCORE.ORG” Midwest Hardcore Band Database

Are you ready for some good big Central Illinois music news?? Well… today we are reporting the launch of a new website – MIDWEST-HARDCORE.ORG. This is a new website that is being compiled (and still being worked on) by Springfield hardcore legend Drew Kodrich (Asthma, Gazeebo, Mouthsex, Small Man, Pryss, Torture Trend, Prevention, GUSH, Final Order). Drew had this to say:

“Hello world! I made this website that’s attempting to work as a database of all the “active” hardcore bands in the midwest. I’ve gotten to about 200 bands on my own, but I could really use your help! Share this around (if you’re so inclined) and either use the submit form or just message me if you have any bands to be added. I know I’m definitely missing stuff. Thanks!”

Amazing. On the site, you can search and look at active hardcore bands by the city or state they are in. You can also submit bands, checkout featured bands and playlists each week! How fun! What do you think of this? Let us know on our underground discussion forum.
