Surprise! Today we are brining you the first local music official release of 2017! This is exciting because it’s Animals With Human Names – who made our list of best albums and best songs of 2016. Also exciting because this is a full length cassette full of songs written to go as background music for the hit local television series “The Studio Show.” You can check out The Studio Tape streaming on the player below. Check out more of The Studio Show right here.

Animals With Human Names of course will be playing a rare battle set against DJ Tariq aka “New York’s Deadliest DJ” inside of Dumb Records tonight as part of the store’s 3 year anniversary. Who will win? Tune in to find out. The show tonight starts at 7:00 pm and is free. AWHN will have these tapes as well as The First Tape on cassette available, and we will also be carrying them at Dumb Records.

Today at Dumb Records: Free Record Day + In Store Show

freerecordflier2

Today is a big day lined up for our own little record store Dumb Records which actually turns three years old today! Hard to believe it’s already been three years since we launched Dumb Records in Southtown, and since then the volunteer-ran store has expanded in size, expanded our hours to be open every day of the week, and even bought our very own elephant. To celebrate the anniversary of Dumb Records, today is the first ever Free Record Day. If you walk in the store any time between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm today, you will get handed a free pre-wrapped record. You don’t know what you are going to get.

In addition to all of that, there will also be some music acts playing a free show in the store tonight at 7:00 pm. Tonight we have a collab set that is going to be one for the books between Animals With Human Names and DJ Tariq. Things are sure to get wild for that one. Then we have Peaches & Bacon for a little something different – an old time music duo from here in town. Opening things up is a performance by a newer solo Springfield musician, Alec James. Stream some of Alec’s music on the player below.

Check out a facebook event for all of that right here. Also check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up in Southtown this year.

New Band Pages: Stereo Static

Today we are bringing you a new band page that is long overdue on our site, and that is one for Stereo Static – a three piece rock group that has been rockin’ it at Black Sheep since the middle of 2015 now. On the band page you can read up more about the band, listen to some tunes, and find links to other websites and social media. Check out their page on our site right here. Stereo Static played at Black Sheep two nights ago, but do not currently have any other shows lined up here as of right now.

We cleaned up our current bands page up a bit and now have a total of 45 pages for active bands in Springfield right now! There are much more now on the past bands page. If you play in a Springfield band that has not yet gotten a page set up with us, email us at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and we will work with you to get one going!

Time to for us to tell you about the next show that is happening over at Springfield basement venue The Radon Lounge! This one is happening on Saturday, January 21st and we do not have any shows lined up at Black Sheep for that night so we can all go. For this show the lounge has great musical act Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen lined up from Champaign, Illinois. You can stream some of their music on the player below. In addition to that they also have solo artist Ben Bedford from the area performing. Looks like there is also a solo performance by Mike Butler (of Vonne and Starlorde). How nice. And The Radon Lounge appears to be mixing things up a bit for this one and featuring poetry peformed by Johari Idusuyi! And there is also a book performing! Cosmic Fate by Jonathan A Meyer will be taking the big stage!

All of that over at The Radon Lounge will be starting at 7:00 pm that night for just $5. For The Radon Lounge’s secret location you will have to dig around their website a little bit. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out our Springfield Shows page for (maybe) a look at some shows happening in town outside of Black Sheep.

January 19th at Black Sheep: Pre-Inauguration Night of Art, Poetry, Noise

arttime.jpg

Thursday, January 19th is the last day before this year’s presidential inauguration and some of us at Black Sheep want to hold another night of expression in response. Going along with our Resilience event last month, this is going to be another event along those lines focused a little bit more on the art and noise side of things. A big highlight of the night is that a big collaborative painting is being organized by Black Sheep co-owner Clare Frachey. From Clare:

I want to organize a community collaborative painting. I’m going to buy a large drop cloth canvas and ask that anyone and everyone bring old house paint and paint brushes to cover this canvas with symbols and imagery in regards to how we are feeling and thinking. No words, just symbols, patterns and ideas put into imagery. It doesn’t have to be super serious, but it can be. This project could end up anywhere! Everyone’s contributions will probably end up overlapping and it will look amazing if we get enough. What you have to express really matters, so here is a place to do it. What we will do with the canvas after it’s finished is still in the works but it’s brewing. This activity is open to any and everyone from all ages and walks of life.

Anyone who is able is encouraged to also bring paint supplies for the piece. In addition to this collaborative art piece, there will also be a noise performance by Emasculate Regression. We also have poetry performances lined up by Ian Winterbauer, Emma Wilson, Keegan Otwell, Johari Id, and more. Anyone who has poetry to share is also welcome to join.

This event will start at 7:00 pm and we will be taking donations to keep the Black Sheep running. Check out a facebook event for all of this right here. Also be sure to check our shows page for other events coming up this year.

What’s up, it’s the weekend right now and the only show of the weekend at Black Sheep is happening tonight! We are going hard in 2017 so this is surely going to be a good one! We have a total of five local bands playing tonight. This includes the return of Kickstart, the Springfield pop punk band that has been kickin’ it for a good number of years now. Stream their music on the player below. Also lined up tonight is Nagasaki, the new hit band featuring some members of Starlorde, and the Springfield High School Marching Band. Up before them looks like is Stereo Static– a rock group that made the list of our top ten albums of 2016 as voted for on this site. Then we have the alt-rock 90’s hit band The Complaint Line shaking things up on the stage. And kicking things off looks like we have the first ever performance of a brand new Springfield band called “Little Death.” Make sure to come early to see what they are all about.

The show tonight kicks off right at 7:00 and admission is $5. You can check out a facebook event right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page right here for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

15272072_1160506250707597_3591375469214932584_o.jpg

Staying on top of things in the new year! Today we have a show announcement for a show that’s happening next month in February! This one is on Saturday, February 18th. It features six whole bands (dang that’s too many bands for one show). We have returning champs from Indiana, Sidelined playing this show. They have played Black Sheep a good number of times in many years past. Then the main touring act on this gig (we think) is Crowns from Nashville, Tennessee. You can check out some of their music streaming on the player below. We also have the grungy as ever three piece from Taylorville, Illinois on this show- Stems. And a FOURth band from outside of Springfield “Low Weather” is playing. They are coming all the way from Seattle, Washington (wow that’s a lot of music from all over the place). The local acts on this bill are solo project Pretend I’m Not There, and other solo project Mystery (maybe the shortened version of Mystery Gift)?

This show will start at 6:30 pm and admission is $8. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up in 2017 at Black Sheep.

15493582_1175298512561704_7154372954326024614_o.jpg

What is this we have going on at Black Sheep on Friday, January 27th? Why is there ketchup and mustard all over this flier? What does it even say? We are not entirely sure about most of those things. But we do know that “Seatbelt Jack,” mastermind behind Pretend I’m Not There is setting up this ambient/acoustic show at Black Sheep that night. Looks like we have a long list of solo performers lined up for this night, we’re just going to have to list them off here in festival-style format:

Pretend I’m Not There
Timothy Donavan Russell
Eric Stanley (Euriah)
Everette (Spooky Poo)
Mario Cannamela
Kenyon Deshasier
Vincent Sebastian
Concern for the Cause

As you can see we have quite the list of solo performers coming from different bands such as Euriah based out of Champaign, Spooky Poo from Decatur, and more. This whole lineup is going to start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Check out some of Timothy Donavan Russell’s music streaming on the player below. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at all of the shows we have coming up at Black Sheep in this year of 2017.
