The first shows that we have lined up at Dumb Records are coming up quick – this Saturday, August 14th, and Monday, August 16th. It’s pretty clear that when these shows were booked on the calendar and the decision was made to move forward with them, cases of COVID-19 in our region and country overall seamed to be in a much better place then they are now. Because COVID-19 is still a very real threat to our community, we are going to be taking needed precautions to make sure the shows we have lined up are as safe as possible.
All show attendees will be required to provide proof of at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine or negative COVID test within the last 72 hoursmasks are required at these events for all attendees.
Masks are required at these events for all attendees.
*Proof of vaccine can be in the form of either your physical COVID-19 vaccination card or a photo on your phone.
We are still in uncertain times and we currently do not have any other indoor shows officially announced other than the upcoming two – but we will be likely enforcing this policy until further notice. The alley show with Laura Jane Grace on August 28th is a free event and outdoors – but as of right now it is safe to say we will all be masking up in the alley, and we are asking for those not vaccinated to not come to that event. You can likely expect a post regarding that show and policies for that at some point before the event.

Amazing… just, amazing. You may have heard the big news by now, but if now – on Saturday, August 28th we’ve got one for the books coming up in the alleyway between Dumb Records and Good Heart Tattoo. Laura Jane Grace – singer and guitarist for the punk rock band Against Me! – and also “notable for being one of the first highly visible punk rock musicians to come out as transgender, after she publicly came out in May 2012″ – will be performing.
In addition to LJG we have a few other solo acts performing. Cole Bridges is coming up from St. Louis – a solo musician formerly from Champaign. Jessica Knight of the band Looming will also be playing, as well as Ricki Marvel also from here in Springfield.
The show will start exactly at 7:00 pm and it is free. With conditions of the pandemic still being up in the air, there might be a strong mask suggestion even if the show is outdoors. We don’t have a facebook event for this one yet, sorry. Laura Jane Grace released her solo album Stay Alive last year on Polyvinyl Records. You can stream that on the player below.

We are now halfway through July and what do you know it looks like we have plenty of copies of the new Activator Magazine stocked on our front counter! This is a very busy month for Activator with the release of the full-color and very nicely done Black Artists Matter issue that we still have plenty of copies of as well.
One the cover of this month’s issue is Decatur Illinois native A.D. Carson also known as “The Professor of Hip Hop.” There is a pretty lengthy interview with him, as well as the usual album reviews for bands in our area and more, also the live music show calendar is making a bit of a return with Activator’s “Best Best” – their top picks for live music this month. There’s a show write-up for the Intricate Flow Fridays Juneteenth Show, an interview with Springfield rock group Enamel, an interview with Splendid Flunkys, Dexter Anodyne, a photospread of bands playing in a tunnel, the Levitt AMP Music Series, and the “Dumb Perspective” column is back where Brian Galecki gives a history of ska bands in Springfield.
Wow! You can pick up all of that in this latest issue of Activator for free here at Dumb Records and various other local spots around Central Illinois. Be sure to check out the Activator Patreon Page online as well to become a monthly donor for exclusive content!
It’s Thursday! That means it’s another Levitt show out on the y-block just through the alley-way from us. This is show number 7 in the 10-part weekly free music series going on here downtown on the y-block (on 4th and Capitol) thanks to our city getting a grant through the Levitt Foundation.
Tonight is the reggae night of the series! The headlining act is Gizzae – which are a group which formed out of the ashes of Ziggy Marley’s backing band “Dallol” in the 1990’s! Neato! They are based out of the Chicago area and they have been a band for 35 years at this point. Opening things up is Loud Clouds from our area.
All of that sounds like a pretty fun time to us! That kicks off out on the lawn at 6:00 pm. Check out the schedule for the remaining shows in the Levitt series on the Levitt website right here.
We’ve now already announced one show happening in August (August 16th)… and here is another one, happening on Saturday, August 14th here at Dumb Records downtown. Those two shows will be our first shows back in this new era – and also our first time having full bands perform on our stage that was built close to a year and a half ago.
This one is just a nice and sweet three band lineup. We have Springfield emo / indie act Bottom Bracket at the top of the bill. The band released their album I Don’t Care Enough To Stay last year, which you can stream on the player below. Another band that released a killer album last year – Attic Salt is also playing. Opening things up is a brand new band called “Tilt Warning” – playing their first show! How fitting!
Oh yeah, and our arcade IS going to be open for these shows we have lined up – all games are set to free play along with show admission. This one starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out our shows page to look at what we’ve got officially lined up right now!
It’s another Tuesday here at Dumb Records and we are dumping out more records than ever… you’d think that Record Store Day is already here or something! As you may know, Record Store Day (the second of two “drop dates”) is happening on this Saturday. We will be open at 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on that day, but all of the other days right now we are open 10:30 am – 6:30 pm. Our arcade is open that same time. Of course on Saturday we’ll be dropping hundreds of exclusive releases that will be out for Record Store Day, but we also have plenty of other goodies in this week. This list is just some of that!

We’re only a couple of days in and already just about need to be re-stocked with this issue, but this is a post to let you know that we do have the most recent “Black Artists Matter” issue of Activator Magazine. This is the second year that Activator has compiled this local zine full of art, poetry, interviews, and more featuring black artists in the area. It’s in full color too, they’ve really gone all out this time around.
In addition to this – the July issue of Activator is also on the way! AND Activator hooked us up with printed out “Live Music Calendars” for the month of July! They are amazing! Consider going and signing up to become a donor for their online Patreon page! We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we have the July issue in stock.
Let’s boogie! It’s a Thursday and it’s latin dance night at the Levitt AMP Music Series here downtown! This is show number 6 in the 10-part weekly free music series going on here downtown on the y-block (on 4th and Capitol) thanks to our city getting a grant through the Levitt Foundation.
Tonight’s headlining act is: Tito Puedo, Jr. – a latin jazz musician and also son of legendary timbale player Tio Puedo. Before Tito goes on at 7:00 pm though – there is going to be a dance lesson on stage by Julio Barrenzuela! And before that at 6:00 pm the opening act is Cuarteto Bendito – a newly formed trio from here in Springfield specializing in Latin Jazz.
All of that sounds like a pretty fun time to us! That kicks off out on the lawn at 6:00 pm. Check out the schedule for the remaining shows in the Levitt series on the Levitt website right here.
