Illinois Times Best Of Springfield 2019 Nominee Voting Has Begun

68258227_10158585119460828_1337522763811782656_o.png

It’s that time of year again. The Illinois Times have once again launched their nominee voting for their annual Best of Springfield series for 2019. Now is your chance to nominate your favorite local businesses and people for various different categories to make it on to final voting later on in September. Check out the nominee voting right here. This goes on from now until August 19th, and actual voting with finalists in each category takes place from September 12th through September 23rd. Yes, this is a popularity contest, it is true.

What categories do we fall under this time around as Dumb Records? This year is the first go-around for the Best Of’s that we have been at our new location downtown, which may open us up to some new categories. It looks like the big one that we want to shoot for getting at least a finalist for this year would be Best New Business Downtown in the “Goods and Services” category. Looks like we might also fit into categories “Place To Go Downtown,” or also “Small Music Venue” as usual. Oh! And also “Best Open Mic Night,” that could be us! It may be ending soon, but The Dumb Records Radio Show can be a contender for “Best Radio Show.” We are never sure if Best Music Shop means record stores or musical instrument stores, but we’ll take any nominations we get for that category.

For the band and musician categories this year, there seems to be less opportunities to vote for your favorite local bands this time around. There are just categories for “Best Original Band,” “Best Cover Band” and “Best Overall Band And Their Genre,” which is sure to leave many disappointed. (Don’t worry, you are all winners in our book). There is an opportunity to vote for your favorite musicians in categories such as “Best Drummer,” “Best Horn Player,” “Best Keyboardist,” etc.

You can also vote for your favorite local music festival, and your favorite local food spots and restaurants. Other fun downtown categories include “Best Use For The Y-Block” “Use for Public Money” or “Use For The Armory.”

We’ll be sure to let you all know when the finalist voting begins and if we make it onto any finalist categories as Dumb Records.

DJ Reco / Various Artists: “Dope: The Mixtape”

Here’s another very recent local hip hop release that came out last month that we now know about thanks to Ken No of Hip Hop Humpday and Activator Magazine. It is a compilation of songs of artists – 27 songs in fact – put together by DJ Reco, called Dope: The Mixtape. The cover features a building we are somewhat familiar with. The mixtape is streaming on Datpiff.com and you can check it out right here. Can we embed players from Datpiff??? Let’s see… Yes!!? Does that player right down there work? Awesome!

We are adding this release to our Springfield album archive page, bringing us to 33 releases that we’ve kept track of so far this year and 459 total.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Meezy Killafield, DreTheGuy, 4usten, WeBackSoon, Torch_Nation, A Da Real

hiphopshowtest

Wow, thanks to all who came out last night making it the biggest show we’ve put on at the new space so far! We are keeping the excitement rolling tonight with another all-local bill, this time it’s our second ever hip hop show! There are six acts performing tonight from the area. At the top of the bill is Meezy Killafield, who has been making a splash as a rapper from our area recently. He released an album – “The Killafield Chronicles” within this past year. Also on this show is DreTheGuy aka “DeAndre”, another hip hop artist who has performed at The Radon Lounge and also recently Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s. He just dropped an album called “Lapis Effect” just a few weeks ago. Then we got 4usten… what’s up with the “A” in this guy’s name being a “4”? Come to the show and find out. For some of his set he will be joined by Brayden Schmohe. Pictured on the flier and also playing from Decatur is the rap duo “WeBackSoon Music Group“. You can also find them streaming on the player below. Also is more of an R&B act called “Torch_Nation“, familiar to a number of the Dumb Records and Black Sheep open mics. Great to finally get him on a show! Opening things up is A Da Real, another young up and coming artist we are pretty sure from Springfield High School. Nice.

Tonight we are saying doors are at 7:00 pm and we are starting things at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good list at what else is coming up at Dumb Bread in the near future.

Oh you thought we were done with our August show announcements? Not so fast. There is one happening on Saturday, August 31st the very last day of the month. It’s a short and sweet one, but also a special one because it will be a music video shoot for one of Prevention‘s songs. Just like this. The song the music video is for is their song “Another World.” We are supposed to tell you to learn the words, practice singing along, and your dance moves before the show at home. Also on this show is Brute Force from the Southern Illinois / St. Louis area. Opening things up is Blushe.

This show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5, you just can’t beat that. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else we’ve got coming up at Bread Dumb Records in the future!

WQNA and The Dumb Records Radio Show may be ending soon at any given point, but we are going to continue with business as usual until we can’t any more on our usual Friday timeslot of 4:00 to 6:00 pm. We have our second ever hip hop show going on at Dumb Records tomorrow night, and as guest on our show today we’ve invited one of the artists who just recently dropped an album, DreTheGuy. DreTheGuy aka “DeAndre” just recently released Lapis Effect which you can find streaming right here online and will be performing at our space tomorrow.

Tune in from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm today and hopefully a few more Fridays to come (we’ll see?) on 88.3 WQNA FM or online at the same time at wqna.org. Also check out our Mix Cloud page for a few recent episodes we recorded streaming online.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Rockford, The Telephone Junkies, Sorry Charlie

rockfordweb

Good morning everyone and welcome to the weekend!! We have two shows going on both tonight and tomorrow night. Tonight is a solid three band show that you won’t want to miss, and tomorrow night is the second hip hop show we have put on at our new space downtown. Tonight is special because it is going to be the last ever show for local band Rockford! The last time Rockford played was the final final last ever Black Sheep show back in December. This will be their first time performing at our new space and their last show before some of them depart off to college and different cities into the big world. Good luck to all of them. Stream their music one last time on the player below. Also playing this show is Rockford’s long time friends The Telephone Junkies. And opening things up we have the return of another band we have not seen in quite a minute – Sorry Charlie!

All of this starts at 7:00 pm that night and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page to see what else is coming up in the near future at our space.

WQNA FM Community Radio Ending After 40 Years

IMG_7282.jpg

It is with great sadness that tonight we are letting you know that our community radio station 88.3 WQNA FM and home to The Black Sheep Radio Show / Dumb Records Radio Show is coming to an end. WQNA has been on the airwaves in Springfield for forty years coming up this month since 1979. We have been lucky enough to host our own Dumb Records / Black Sheep Radio Show out of the station for the past six and a half of those years.

There is an article in The State-Journal Register that was posted online today and will be in tomorrow’s print version – “Career Center Confirms WQNA Is Up For Sale.” After dwindling to absolutely no student interest in TV and radio in recent years, the Capitol Area Career Center which houses the station’s base and supplies most of the funding to keep things going was left with a tough choice to no longer continue housing the station and putting it up for sale. From the article:

“When you’re serving zero students, you can’t justify pouring $30,000-$40,000 into the station,” Ferriell said. “It’s not a decision that we’ve taken lightly. It was a difficult decision. It’s a great station.”

This does mean that our weekly radio show on Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on the airwaves as we know it will be soon coming to an end, as well as a great number of other local weekly programs featured on the station of all different genres.

Some WQNA DJs will be getting together for a meeting soon to discuss any options of any type of contingency, or the possibilities of online streaming or podcast-type shows for the future. We are open to hearing these options out for The Dumb Records Radio Show, but are uncertain as to what the future holds for us right now. We have been recording more recent episodes of our radio program and have a few of them streaming on Mix Cloud.

A definite end date to the station is uncertain now, at this point any episode of our radio program could be our last.

Today we bring you a fresh new local music video by hip hop group “Wasted Talent” for their song “Wasted Creativity”. The video was shot by Jayy Wills Entertainment in a few places in town that look a little too familiar. Check out the video streaming below, or on Youtube right here. Wasted Talent doesn’t have any live shows lined up that we know of.

Check out our vids/pics page for a list of music videos shot in town over the years.

September 4th at Dumb Records: ????, Teenage Bigfoot, Starter Jackets, Bottom Bracket

68627282_2632659066785444_5325773964029460480_n.jpg

Happy Thursday to all of you out there following what we do here at The Bread Factory / Dumb Records. Sorry we are all over the place with website posts lately. Today we are telling you about a show coming up in a little less than a month and our first one being announced for September. Fun! This is a weird one because there is a band on the bill that we can not officially announce yet, but we CAN tell you that it is a band that’s coming from overseas. That’s exiting, right? Don’t worry, it will be good. That band is touring with another band from Philadelphia called Teenage Bigfoot that we can tell you about. In fact, you can even stream their music on the player below. This show will be joined by local support from local favorite solid group Starter Jackets, and also solid solid group Bottom Bracket.

All of this starts at 7:00 pm and admission will be $10. Check out a facebook event for this show right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up at our show space downtown.
