Sure, we have a lot of big things lined up for Black Friday Record Store Day this upcoming Friday (in just three days), but this upcoming Saturday is a big day for downtown and small businesses all around the globe or country or something as well. It’s Small Business Saturday, and also the official kick-off for the Downtown Springfield “Holiday Walks”. Yes, we are participating in these “Holiday Walks” – our store will be open, because it pretty much is always open. The deal we are throwing in to the Holiday Walks is that we will be giving out free stickers with purchases during the walks.

Official “Holiday Walks” shopping that day is from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. From noon – 3pm by the Old State Capitol Plaza there will be free carriage rides. Santa will be there as well. Or wait, Santa’s grand entrance is at 5:30 pm at the Old State Capitol Plaza along with the official tree lighting ceremony. It’s supposed to be great.

Find a facebook event for the holiday walks kick-off event here. After Saturday, Holiday Walks are every Saturday and Wednesday leading up until Christmas. Saturday during the day from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Wednesday evenings from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All of the shops downtown are open and have special deals going on, and are all decked out for the holidays. We have a tree in our store with records on it. Check out the Downtown Springfield Incorporated official website right here.

December 14th at The Radon Lounge: “Radon Christmas”

77106451_2886958511314658_4849065927414644736_o.jpg

Our friends over at The Radon Lounge have announced their big annual Christmas show to take place this year on Saturday, December 14th. We don’t have a show lined up here that night so we can all go! Pop on your favorite Christmas sweater and grab a sled and let’s all head over to the lounge. The big act on the bill from Chicago this time is 6’10 (like six foot ten inches), the height of the guy who is in Flatfoot 56 (the band). Stream some of 6’10’s music on the player below. Also playing is Springfield indie duo Idle Oath – they are actually playing at our space the night before for the Springfield Community Broadcasters benefit as well! There’s another group from Chicago on the bill called “The Uh Oh’s” playing music that is supposedly Christmas appropriate.  Opening things up is David Lasley and Sophia Magruder.

That show starts at The Radon Lounge at 7:00 pm and is $5. Don’t know where the Radon Lounge is? You can inquire at radonlounge@gmail.com. Find a facebook event for this show right here. And also be sure to check out our Springfield shows page where we try to list off other shows going on in town but do a bad job at keeping up at it.

WQNA Live Stream Back On

72466198_142294237133015_8384786617272893440_o.png

After the plug was officially pulled on WQNA 88.3 FM community radio as we know it one week ago, yesterday the station was successful in at least getting a live stream back up on the internet as it had been when the station was in full force. You can find that at listen.wqnaradio.org. The actual frequency of 88.3 fm was bought out by a Catholic Radio Group from the CACC which decided to sell the station and give up the school’s radio program earlier this year. We would imagine most of what is streaming right now is automated programing since it is hard for a lot of former shows on WQNA (including The Dumb Records Radio Show) to continue with programing without a studio in place. Maybe our other “True Freak Radio” show will still be put on the live stream at Fridays at midnight, and we will be looking into possibly starting The Dumb Records Radio Show back up into the live stream at it’s Friday 4:00 pm time-slot soon.

Fundraising efforts to get the station back on air (potentially on a different frequency) are still underway, and there is a benefit show set up at our space here at Dumb Records on Friday, December 13th. There is also an ongoing GoFundMe campaign set up online right here.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Arachnid, Final Order, Gargantuan

It’s Monday, and surprise, there is a show tonight! This one is just a three band show now – what do you know but LIVID, the name that’s big at the top of the flier and the band that is pictured on the flier have dropped. Isn’t that just unfortunate. However, there is still a touring band on this show so it is important that we come out and support! That is Arachnid from Fargo, North Dakota! Stream their music on the player below! It is also the very first ever live show for a brand new Springfield black metal project called Gargantuan! So definitely also important to come out and support that! Right in the middle of that peanut butter sandwich of bands that we have left is Final Order.

That all starts at 7:00 pm and the admission price has been reduced to $5. Alright, we are going to go ahead and say that start time is more likely 7:30 pm since this show is shortened, and will probably go by really quick. Find a facebook event for the show tonight right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Neak, Kid Ziggy & Papa Luke, Otto San, OG Spinner, Dizzy Vibes, Zach Moad & Young Frost

NEAKshow_2

Did you hear? There is a really big hip hop show going on at our space tonight. The first one we have set up at the new space with a touring hip hop act on it. Let’s make some noise and have a good time. This one is the first hip hop show we have done at the new space featuring a touring act! That is hip hop / jazz artist “Neak” from Chicago! Stream some of Neak’s music on the player below! Other than Neak, this bill features a very stacked lineup of some of the best local artists. This includes the duo Kid Ziggy and Papa Luke, who have been making a splash in the local hip hop scene (featured on the cover of last month’s Activator). Also featured on the cover of last month’s Activator and performing this show… is Otto San! If that’s not enough for you, check out OG Spinner who is also playing this show. Before that it’s time to get dizzy with Dizzy Vibez, from right here in the capitol city. Oh wait! We’ve got one more duo opening things up and that is Zach Moad and Young Frost of Vision Glory Entertainment!

All of that starts with doors at 7:00 pm tonight! Admission is $7. Check out a facebook event for that one right here. Also check out our shows page to see what else is coming up right here.

Black Friday Record Store Day is typically our second biggest day in sales at Dumb Records right next to Record Store Day in April. Believe it or not, Black Friday is just one week away from today on Friday, November 29th. We’ve been meaning to fill you all in on the titles that we are expecting to get in this year. And we are getting all stocked up on record players, gift cards, shirts, hoodies, crew neck sweatshirts and all of that great stuff!! We even have a show that night at 7:00 pm! So come out even if you aren’t just in it for the exclusives! But if you are, you can find that list of what we ordered below. Black Box: “What Happens Inside?”

a3991441978_10.jpg

Today we bring you a rippin’ hot demo tape from Springfield’s newest (or one of the newest) hardcore outfits, Black Box. The demo is called What Happens Inside? and you can find all seven tracks streaming below. Also head over to the newly created Black Box bandcamp page to download the demo at your own price.

Black Box will be playing a big tape release show on Sunday, December 15th at our space. Find a facebook event here. We haven’t officially made an announcement for that show, but likely will tomorrow!

December 13th at Dumb Records: Benefit Show For Springfield Community Broadcasters (WQNA DJs)

howsthislookdanny.jpg

Are you ready to hear about an important show lined up? Of course yesterday we told you about how the plug was pulled on WQNA 88.3 fm community radio as we know it, however fundraising will continue. Well, there is a benefit event going on TONIGHT at Buzz Bomb Brewery, so get on over to that (more info right here). Then on Friday, December 13th we have our own benefit show happening at Dumb Records to go towards the cause of continuing community radio in Springfield! Proceeds will be going to Springfield Community Broadcasters.

Who do we got playing? Epsom is at the top of the bill, a band we all know is going to rock. The newer local duo that is grade-A quality music, Idle Oath will be playing as well. Idle Oath features Mark Beanblossom who was a DJ on Thursday evenings on 88.3 WQNA. Stream some of their music on the player below. We also have Snuff Rider lined up… instrumental heavy surf band… but guess what, they have changed their name to SONIC MAXIMIZER. We can hardly handle that new name, sorry the flier above isn’t updated. Opening things up is Arlin Peebles and Erin Steinhauer! A duo that you all know and love from The Studio show.

That show starts at 7:00 pm, and for admission we are asking donations of at least $5 to go towards the cause. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page to see what else is coming up at our space in the near future.

WQNA 88.3 FM Sold To Catholic Radio Group, Springfield Community Broadcasters Fundraising Continues

IMG_9647.JPG

It is a sad day for us that have been part of community radio at 88.3 WQNA FM. Yesterday, the plug was pulled on the station which had ran on the air for over 40 years since 1979 after a bid was made by a Catholic radio group and accepted by CACC. However, fundraising efforts for community radio are continuing and not all hope is lost. Here is the official post yesterday from the WQNA 88.3 facebook page:

As of noon today, CACC finalized the sale of the WQNA 88.3 FM license to Covenant Network, a Network with two existing subsidiaries in Springfield radio, and shortly after, WQNA fell silent.

While we knew this was coming in some form or fashion, none of us have had a chance to do a final sign-off or say goodbye to WQNA and the loyal audience we all share.

BUT we want to make sure that everyone is aware that beyond being taken off-air, nothing has changed regarding fundraising efforts led by the Springfield Community Broadcasters, the non-profit that is working to keep community radio alive in Springfield.

WE ARE IN PROCESS OF ACQUIRING ANOTHER LICENSE.

We can’t share all the details, but this is a another real avenue to keep the broadcasters and programming from WQNA alive on another FM frequency, and we will keep you updated as much as possible in the coming weeks.

We have lost this battle, but the war continues. The benefit at Buzz Bomb is still going. The benefit at Dumb Records is still on. Same with the show at the Alamo. The Go Fund Me is still active. Nothing has changed beyond this bump in the road.

We are not dead, and rumors of our demise have been oft exaggerated.

Please share this far and wide, and let’s keep working to save community radio!!!!

A link to donate to the ongoing GoFundMe campaign can be found right here. Dumb Records as well as Recycled Records and The Elf Shelf continue to be drop off points for check or cash donations. Over $10,000 at this point has been raised to go towards the cause of continuing community radio. Tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:00 pm is the fundraiser / benefit at Buzz Bomb Brewery not far from us downtown. You can find a facebook event with more info right here. We will also be hosting a benefit show at Dumb Records on Friday, December 13th which we will announce details for tomorrow.

An article ran in the City & State section of The State Journal Register about the sale of the station. “WQNA-FM sold to Catholic Radio Group; Signal Goes Silent” – which you can check out online right here or by picking up a copy of today’s (Wednesday’s) newspaper.
