Today we bring news that long time Springfield musician Jim Troxell, long time bass player in various local groups in the 1970’s-present has passed away. Jim, also known as “Tooter” performed in early punk/new-wave group Food & Money which was active from 1979-1982, and performed a very rare reunion show at Black Sheep in 2017. He also performed in Flock of Tooters, and various other groups throughout the years. From the Food & Money facebook page:

So deeply saddened to announce that Jim “Tooter” Troxell has passed away from cancer. He was truly the backbone of a Food and Money, both musically and personally. So glad we got to reunite as a band not too long ago, the magic was still there. Good luck on your next adventure Tooter.

Activator Magazine July + Black Artists Matter Issues Available Now

IMG_5725

Whoops, what do you know it’s already July 20th and we have not yet done a post here to let you know that we have not one but TWO new issues of Activator Magazine in our store!!

One is the regular July 2020 issue. This one is a fun issue for us because we have a big interview spread about our new arcade and new renovations that we have been working on during the pandemic here at Dumb Records! Featured on the cover and interviewed in this issue is Junior Pasaré (TJ Byrd) and Meezy Killafield. The two talk about their upcoming collaborative project. In addition to this there are album reviews, and interviews with Edward David Anderson, Kaream Williams, Gargantuan, Champaign Cypher Series, Church The Voice, and more. There are poems, art, and photo spreads as well.

The second issue is a bonus issue for this month, and that is the “Black Artists Matter” issue focusing on black artists in Central Illinois. This includes artists, poets, musicians, and more. You can find a commentary by Wilma J Wofford, an interview with Michelle Smith, an artist directory, a list of local black owned businesses and more.

You can pick up both issues for free in our store, or various other locations around town!

The State Journal-Register: “Dumb Records, Arlington’s Open Arcades”

Well what do you know would you look at that! We made the Sunday paper! Pretty cool! As you can see, in the State-Journal Register today there is the article “Dumb Records, Arlington’s Open Arcades.” From the article:

The “Dumb Arcade” is hidden away in the back of the record store’s live event space in a dark room.

Once there, customers are greeted with the sight and sounds of 10 machines, including a sit down racing game, 4 stand up classic arcade games, and 5 pinball machines.

Dumb Records owner Brian Galecki said the concept came from business partner Jeff Black.

You can check out the full article online right here, or pick up a copy of the State Journal-Register at various places around town.

Our arcade is open every day the same time as our store, from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm.

Lincoln’s Legends Podcast: “Ready Player Dumb”

Our buddies over at Lincoln’s Legends podcast did a nice blog post on our new arcade called “Ready Player Dumb”. Check that out on the Lincoln’s Legends site right here. From the post:

I am a life long advocate for the technology, the world-building/ storytelling, and the mental escape video games provide. At a time when the world feels like it’s spinning out of control, I am eager for the opportunity to escape inside a cabinet and bask in the warm glow of nostalgia.

Much like the video game designers who brought joy to my childhood the team and Dumb Records designed a world of their own, and after many long months of planning and repairs, they are now ready to share it with all of you.

Thanks Lincoln’s Legends! Our arcade is open every day from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm and has been going very well!
