Today on Black Sheep Radio: Tom Irwin

1372820_10201512210841278_784532358_nIt’s already Friday and we almost forgot that Friday means that it’s another episode of The Black Sheep Radio Show! We are excited to announce that our guest on the radio this week is long time musician and writer of the music section of The Illinois Times, Tom Irwin. Tom is bringing a lot to the show this week. He might fill us in a little bit on how the Illinois Times’s Best Ofs are going for 2013. He is also bringing his guitar and might perform some songs on air. He also is bringing in some of his older recorded music and some of his favorite Springfield songs from as far back as the 1980s. All that plus we will be playing more of your current favorite Springfield hits as well as plenty of music from bands coming through Black Sheep very soon.

That all happens on The Black Sheep Radio Show, airing Fridays (today) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. You can listen to our show on 88.3 WQNA fm or online at wqna.org. All of our old episodes are also up for download over on our radio page!

Wir Können Is Releasing A Tape!

WK GMP COVER

You heard it here folks! Local sad-boy emo group Wir Können is putting out a cassette tape. The dudes have been talking about recording for a while (ever since they formed) and now it seems that there’s some truth to it all. It looks like it’ll be 2 songs (one on each side) for 2 bucks. What a bang for your buck! They’ll be selling them at their next show at the Black Sheep which is November 5th! You can find an event page for that show with Two Knights, Our Lady, and Jess Knight right here!

Wir Können has another show coming up in November in Champaign! Check out the event page for that right here! To stay updated with the saddest boys of Springfield, check out their Facebook where they try not to slack off on posting about shows, new stuff, etc.

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored: Thumper – First Ever Recordings

thumper

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored strikes again! Lucky for all of us, they make it super easy to access old, local music, and this week they have some freshly salvaged material for us! Thumper has now risen from the folds of time to greet us with their raw punk tunes once again. They were together during some point in the 90’s and featured multiple members, a few of whom were also in Ingot at one point. To read the full article, click here and also check out all of the other rad bands that Springfield has been home to in the past. Thumper featured Ladd Mitchell who now plays in the recently reunited band Park, who are currently recording a three-song EP.

It’s a real treat to have access to these older bands, especially through the Some Things Can’t Be Ignored bandcamp page, so make sure to check that out and get some history homework done to feed your hungry ears.

First and foremost, though, check out Thumper’s First EVER Recordings!

Looming EP up for Free Download/Looming Video

loominginternet

Brand new Springfield indie/pop rock sensations Looming have made their self-titled EP available for free download on bandcamp. Earlier this month we brought you the stream of the six-song EP. You can find the link to download the EP right here, or on the bandcamp player embedded to the bottom of this post.

We also have a video from Looming’s very first show on September 21st at Black Sheep! You can check that (shaky) video above. You can catch Looming at Black Sheep again at this year’s Hobgob along with NIL8, Soap Scum, Execution Techniques, and Orange Soda or also on December 1st with Captain Chaos.

New Band Pages: Naughtalus, Schnozzberry Jam

Schnozz_live_banner

Today we bring you two new band pages!  The first one is Naughtalus, a spooky, moody and experimental band that holds the intentions of rising beyond genre limitations and just playing music for what it is. This band was started in 2012 and features Taylor Michael Watkins on guitar and vocals, Clint DeRoza on guitar, Simon Prehoda on bass and Evan Shaw and drums/synth. Also taking a spot on our band pages tab will be Schnozzberry Jam, which is a jazz, blues and rock n roll band all rolled up in one! Their jams taste like schnozzberries thanks to members Ramsey Miller on guitar and vocals (also in Negative 17), Grant Bowden on bass and Dylan Gladson on drums.

If you want to see our numerous other band pages, check out our current bands page. We’ve really been building it up since the dawn of this website, so make sure to check it out every once in awhile to see the things we have cooking in Springfield! We are always open to adding more bands so if you’re in a Springfield band and you don’t have a page on our website, contact blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and let us know!

HOBGOB 2013: NIL8, Soap Scum, Looming, Execution Techniques, Orange Soda

hobslob

This year’s Hobgoblinspookadelic lineup is here! It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Get ready to be spooked! As we all know, Springfield punk legends NIL8 will be playing this year’s Hobgob, as they do every year. Other than NIL8, there are four other bands on the bill! The first of those is the rowdy punk/hardcore band Soap Scum! Soap Scum last played at Black Sheep on Friday, September the 13th and it was a very spooky show. Next we have Springfield’s newest indie/pop rock band that everyone loves, Looming. Looming played their first show at Black Sheep not long ago and it was great. Check out their new six song EP here. Another scary one we have on the bill this year is the harsh noise project Execution Techniques. To top that all off we have a fun punk band from Champaign called Orange Soda. We have been told the band features members of Dino Bravo and Kowabunga! Kid and are guaranteed to bring us a good time.

Hobgob is on Friday, October 25th this year. Costumes are encouraged, but you can do or wear whatever you want. This will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for the show right here, and check out our shows page to see what else is coming up at Black Sheep!

Tonight at Black Sheep: Our Lady, Lord Snow, My Dad, Yusuke, Mystery Gift

558628_724415554252121_1053178564_nTonight’s the night! Tonight is going to be a great finale to the long run of shows that we have been having at the end of September. After this there aren’t any shows scheduled until October 11th so you better come out and enjoy the last bit of summer heat while you can! Tonight features local touring emo superstars Our Lady, who will be playing their first show since Black Sheep Fest. Let’s all come out and show our support! There are also a couple of touring bands on this show. There will be the talented screamo band Lord Snow from Chicago. They just put out a new full-length which you can check out below. Lord Snow will be touring with My Dad. Who’s dad? Nobody’s dad, the band My Dad! My Dad played at Black Sheep this past February, so this will be their return show. Also playing this show is Dumb Fest band Yusuke from Bloomington/Peoria IL. They were the first band to play on the Skanks stage of Dumb Fest in June. To top that all off we have the newer Springfield band Mystery Gift opening up the show for us. All of that should be loads of fun.

The show tonight starts right at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find the facebook event for the show right here, and don’t forget to check our shows page for what other shows are coming up at Black Sheep!
