New Band Pages: Teen Freak

teenfreakphoto

It looks like the Black Sheep Band Lotto that happened a couple of weekends ago resulted in a new Springfield band. That band is going by the name “Teen Freak” and today we are bringing you a brand new band page for the new band. You can find that right here. Teen Freak features members of Looming, Soap Scum, and The Locals among a few other bands. You can catch Teen Freak live next at Black Sheep on Thursday, September 18th along with F///\\\M, Secret Tombs, and JAG.

Teen Freak isn’t the only band we have a band page for. You can find the long list of 70-something band pages we have built here on our current bands page. Do you play in a Springfield band that hasn’t yet set up a page with us? We would love to hear from you! Get ahold of us at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and we will work with you to set something up.

Earlier this month we hosted our very first Black Sheep Band Lotto and the event ended up being an outstanding success, with ten bands performing very solid and interesting sets. Back in May, 53 volunteers put their name into a box in which 12 bands of 4-5 people were drawn. Four of the bands ended up combining resulting in 10 bands that all performed in some way or another at the Band Lotto Show last weekend. The night began at 7:00 with a ten-piece jazz ensemble and ended after 11:00 in South Town Studio with a secret set from one of the bands.

You can find some pictures from that night below, or head over to our Black Sheep Band Lotto flickr album right here. Thanks to photographer AJ Francis for all of the great pictures. If you missed this year’s band lotto, it looks like one of the bands has gone on to continue playing other shows going by the name “Teen Freak.” The new band will be playing their next show at Black Sheep on Thursday, September 18th along with F///\\\M, Secret Tombs, and JAG. The next big Black Sheep event will be our nine-year anniversary show happening on Saturday, September 13th.

photo-main

Bloomington, Indiana-based record label Plan-It-X Records have announced that they are planning to 20-band compilation release which will feature one song by Springfield’s very own Looming. From Chris Clavin of Plan-It-X Records:

So, despite slowing down on releasing physical music. Plan-it-x will be releasing one LP comp each year. This comp will be filled to the edges with cool bands (see below) that I really like and hopefully that you have never heard of (and probably a few ‘cool’ bands to help it get out there).

There is a Kickstarter site set up to fund the compilation LP which you can find right here. The Kickstarter is set up with a $3,999 goal in mind and there are incentives set up such as a free download of the LP for $5 and the physical copy of the LP for $15. Bands confirmed so far include Looming, Ghost Mice, Garrett Walters, Spoonboy, Superfamicom, and more.

Right now the next Springfield show that Looming has lined up is Wednesday, November 5th at Black Sheep along with Dowsing and Our Lady.

Springfield punk rock band The Timmys have been hard at work lately. Earlier this spring we gave an update that The Timmys were busy recording in South Town Studio. Now it’s time for us to hear a result of their recording time in South Town’s very own recording studio. The band have recently announced their newest release- an upcoming EP called Dude, Girl. The new EP will be released online on Tuesday, September 2nd. The EP was recorded by The Timmys’ very own Brandon Carnes of South Town Studio and was mastered by The Blasting Room in Colorado. Alternative music website The Dying Scene recently featured a stream of one of the songs off of the EP called “Death Grip.” You can find that song right here. Also check out a teaser video for the EP below.

The Timmys will be playing next at Black Sheep on Saturday, September 6th as a part of our second annual Punk Rock Cookout. Also playing that show will be Minor Decline, Bad Banshee, and Say Something.
