Empire Board Shop Becoming “Boof City Skate Shop” October 31st

10370429_730254780383250_5897463403042674090_nThere are all sorts of big business moves going on around South Town recently. Last week we announced that Dumb Records was taking over the Harm House’s “Record of the Night.” Today we are bringing you news of change happening right above Dumb Records. It looks like Empire Board Shop is no more, and a new skate shop being called “Boof City Skate Shop” will be taking it’s place in the same spot right above Dumb. What does this change mean? For one, the skate shop above Dumb Records will be under new ownership. With this change we have also been told that the new skate shop will be ran more in tune with Skank Skates (similar to the affiliation between Black Sheep and Dumb Records). The new skate shop will be kicking things off with a big grand opening this Halloween:

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for anything going on at Black Sheep that same night. We will post regular hours for the new Boof City Skate Shop when they are known.

Dumb Records Buys Rights To Harm House’s “Record Of The Night”

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 12.24.06 AM

After the overall success of Cassette Store Day and general sales, Dumb Records made a bold business move earlier this week. The South Town record store (1107 South Grand East) decided to buy the rights to the inactive internet blog formerly known as “Harm House Record Of The Night” for 4 million dollars. The Springfield house venue known as the “Harm House” had been featuring photos of records on the blog for around one and a half years. You can now find the new and improved “Record of the Night” site at dumbrecords.tumblr.com. From the about section on the site:

We have now decided to move Record of the Night to Dumb Records to raise awareness of our local record store here in Springfield and promote records and bands that we love.

Be on the lookout for many “records of the night” taking place at Dumb Records and around South Town in the future. For a look at Dumb Records’ operating hours, go here. Find the first ever Dumb Records Record of the Night photo below.

Today we have a show announcement happening a little ways from now at the end of November. This one is happening on Saturday, November 29th. It will feature the Detroit hardcore/metal act Hollow Earth. You can stream some of Hollow Earth’s music on the player below. Hollow Earth will be on tour with hardcore/grind band KDC from New York and also the heavy Exalt from Ontario, Canada. All of that put together should be a real heavy show and a heavy time. Then we have a couple of local bands. We have the half-Springfield half-Central Illinois band Loses The Mighty playing. Opening the show up will be Springfield’s newest German-punk band, Milchjunge (which is German for Milk Boys).

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $7 this time around. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at everything coming up at Black Sheep (it’s going to be a great month).

Boss Tharrio Music Video: “More”

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 12.15.53 AM

Just recently Black Sheep and Dumb Records have been on a roll being featured in music videos being shot in Springfield. Yesterday we featured the video for Jay Willis’s song “Breathless” which was shot inside and outside of Black Sheep. We also recently stumbled across this video shot outside of Dumb Records of the hip hop artist Boss Tharrio. This is for Boss Tharrio’s song “More.” You can check out the video embedded below.

Important note: while we did think that this video was worth mentioning on this site, Dumb Records and The Black Sheep Cafe does not allow or encourage illegal activity or substances inside or around our buildings.

Boss Tharrio does not have any shows lined up at Black Sheep, but if you are interested in local hip hop, you can check out the show happening Friday night with Mikey Hash, MPress, OM33ZY, and Khunnit Music Group.

October 31st at Donnie’s Homespun: NIL8’s Hobgoblinspookadelic

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 12.07.38 AM

Earlier we announced our big Halloween show happening at Black Sheep on October 24th featuring Don’t Mess With Winkie, Los Injectors, Bad Banshee, and King Worm. NIL8‘s legendary Hobgoblinspookadelic will not be happening at Black Sheep this year, but instead just at Donnie’s Homespun. The date for that will be on Halloween, Friday October 31st. For that show there is another great local lineup. NIL8 will be playing (of course) along with long running Springfield punk band The Timmys. They will be joined by newer Springfield hardcore/punk/ska bands Bad Banshee and King Worm. For photos of last year’s Hobgob you can check out our Hobgob 2013 album on flickr.

All of that will be at 7:00 pm at Donnie’s Homespun (located at 107 West Cook Street) and the show is all ages. Admission will be $5. Find a facebook event for this right here. You can check out a list of this show and more upcoming Springfield shows on our Springfield shows page.

Jay Willis Music Video: “Breathless”

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 11.43.14 PM

It is not too often that we get to feature too much going on in the hip-hop realm of Springfield music here at blacksheepspringfield.com. However, there have been more an more hip hop shows happening at Black Sheep recently and we feel that this new music video from Springfield’s own Jay Willis is worth mentioning. The video is for his song called “Breathless” which was shot inside Black Sheep this summer. You can check out that video below.

Jay Willis does not have anything lineup up at Black Sheep currently, but there is a hip hop show happening at Black Sheep on Friday featuring Mikey Hash, MPress, OM33ZY, and Khunnit Music Group. You can also stay updated with everything related to hip hop and rap in the area at 217hiphop.com. Black Sheep and Dumb Records is also open to pretty much any band or musician looking to record music videos. You can always get ahold of us at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com.

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored: “The Timmys” (1999)

hpqscan0001

Springfield historic music blog Some Things Can’t Be Ignored have made a new update featuring a very rare and classic Springfield punk release- The Timmys‘ 1999 self-titled CD. This would have been released when The Timmys were only a couple of years old as a band. From Some Things Can’t Be Ignored:

Alright, folks…what we’ve got here is the FIRST full-length record ever released by Springfield’s second longest running punk band, the Timmys!!  This was recorded over quite a few months at Studio Media in Evanston, IL in 1999 and self-released by the fellas shortly thereafter.  Not many of these CDs were made as far as I can remember.  As soon as I managed to get to the next Timmys show after this came out, there weren’t any to be had.  A short run of home-burned copies were made, sold at shows and given out to friends and family, and that was about it, I think.  So…it’s pretty obvious that I’m SUPER excited about letting this local gem see the light of day again!!

Check out the full post right here, where you can download the album right here. The Timmys of course are still an active band, and they will be playing this year’s Hobgoblinspookadelic at Donnie’s Homespun.
