November 23rd: Black Friday Record Store Day at Dumb Records

BFflier_webfinal.jpg

Hey! Did you know that one week from tomorrow is one of the biggest days of the year for us at Southtown Record Store Dumb Records? That’s because it is Black Friday Record Store Day, which happens every year (similar to Record Store Day in April). This year that is taking place the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 23rd. The store has a good number of exclusive releases coming in as usual, but will also be doing the biggest sale we have ever held – 50% off the entire store (new and used). Wow! In addition to all of that there will be a show in the store at 7:00 pm, which is free!

Let’s take a look at the acts performing for the in-store show at 7:00 pm. The one full band we have on the bill is a newer Springfield project and from our understanding a heavier band called “Foot“. You can stream some Foot on the player below. Also performing is Kenyon DeShasier. Kenyon makes a lot of music, you should check out his Youtube page. Before that we have excellent musician Matt LaMarca. And opening things up looks like we have a solo musician from Winchester, IL who recently put out an album that we carry in our store on vinyl – Stuart Smith.

The store is open from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm for Black Friday (wow). It’s probably safe to say that we’ll have coffee and donuts for all of you early birds. Check out a facebook event for Black Friday at Dumb Records here. The 50% sale applies to everything except those exclusive releases. Do you want that list of exclusives? Here you go:

IMG_2264.JPG

Hi, here is a post (a little late) to let you know that we do have (*and very limited copies of) the new November issue of Activator Magazine. Activator is the newest (half a year old now) Springfield fanzine focusing on local music and art in Central Illinois. This month’s issue features Ayo Dele – head of HISO Music & Entertainment which just opened up a new studio here in Springfield not far from Black Sheep. The issue also features album reviews, show calendars, a rundown on Springfield hip hop and other interviews, and an interview on what The Studio Show guys have been up to.

Pick up a copy for free inside Dumb Records now, the store is open noon – 8pm every day. We are also now stocked with Activator shirts, stickers, and buttons! (Pictured above).

Hi all, are you ready to hear about the next show that we have lined up at Black Sheep? This one is happening this upcoming Wednesday, November 14th. It features a touring hardcore band from Cincinnati, Ohio called “Flesh Mother.” Stream some of their music on the player embedded below. We also have heavy Springfield hardcore act Graveswitcher on the bill. Up before those two are – who’s fangers? Foam Fangers– the rowdy Springfield punk group. Opening things up it looks like we have a noisy performance by Gutterpriest– back from the dead?

All of this starts on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

Tonight at Black Sheep: KaBass, Mario, Ghost, Kid Nightmare

It’s the weekend! And it’s cold outside! Well guess what, our heat is working great inside Black Sheep and we’ve got a different show going on tonight than we usually host. It’s a night of electronic and dubstep music. This show features long running Springfield electronic project KaBass. We also have “Mario” aka “Funky House”? Who is also based right here in Springfield. Another group on this bill is “Kid Nightmare” coming from St. Louis. You can check out a 25 minute long piece by Kid Nightmare on the player below. The last group on the bill is “Ghost” – which apparently is some hip hop from Peoria! All sorts of great things going on!

This show starts at 7:00 pm typical show time and is just $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at what else we’ve got coming up at Black Sheep for the rest of this year.

Springfield In The Running For Levitt Amp Live Music Grant (Help Vote)

Screen Shot 2018-11-09 at 1.15.25 PM.png

Our friends over at Downtown Springfield Inc. have notified us that our Springfield is currently in the running to win a grant for $25,000 to go towards music events in the downtown area. The grant is called The Levitt Amp Grant – here’s a description of the Levitt Amp organization from their site:

The Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards is an exciting matching grant program made possible by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a national creative placemaking funder dedicated to strengthening the social fabric of America through the power of free, live music. With Levitt AMP, the joy of free, live music is bringing communities together in small and mid-sized towns and cities across the country.

While Levitt’s program of permanent outdoor music venues, each presenting 50+ free concerts annually, is tailored to large metro areas with populations of over 400,000 (due to financial sustainability and audience development considerations), the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards are specifically designed to meet the needs and capacity of small to mid-sized towns and cities.

Since 2015, the Levitt Foundation has awarded $1.4 million total to 29 communities across America through the Levitt AMP grant program.

Springfield is currently eighth place in the running. Go to the Levitt Amp site and vote right here – you will have to register on their site (which entails giving them a name and email address) before voting.

Downtown Springfield Inc. has reached out to us at Black Sheep saying they would like us involved in some of the organizing for at least one of the events if we win the grant!

Arlin Peebles: “When You Need Me”

Screen Shot 2018-11-06 at 1.00.41 PM.png

Hey, it’s more new Springfield music! Today we are bringing you a stream of a brand new album from solo Springfield musician Arlin Peebles. You might recognize Arlin as co-host on Springfield web series The Studio Show or current drummer for Kate Laine. This is Arlin’s second full length album called When You Need Me. You can find it streaming in entirety on the player below.

Arlin is having a release show for his new album at The Studio this Saturday, along with a debut of a short film put together by some of the same creative minds that brought you The Studio Show. You can find more info on the facebook event for that right here.

We are continuing working on our ultimate Springfield album archive to properly be able to recap 2018 by the end of this year! Go check out that page right here!

Tonight at Black Sheep: (Comedy Show) Ryan Shores, Dan Bublitz, Larry Smith

43877841_10218463744204155_649411927172186112_o

There has been so much going on as far as shows go lately! Tonight ends the big long streak we have been having – it’s been six shows total in a timespan of seven days (wow). Tonight is going to be a little bit different – it’s a comedy show! We have two touring comedians coming for this one – Ryan Shores and Dan Bublitz. We have one local comedian opener and that is Larry Smith. We don’t have any music streaming on the player below for this one, because these guys are all comedians! You can read a nice background description on each one on our facebook event!

This show is starting at 7:30 pm and admission is $5. We will get the chairs out. Again, a facebook event is right here. Also check out our shows page for a good look at what is coming up at Black Sheep the rest of this year.

Tonight at Black Sheep: Alchemist Review (UIS) Presents Open Mic Night

43879390_1841331902587620_8647441021522673664_o

What’s this? There’s something a little bit different going on at Black Sheep tonight! It’s an open mic night – but this one is not in fact your typical open mic night that we usually hold at Black Sheep or Dumb – this one is being organized by UIS group The Alchemist Review. We welcome any UIS or LLCC groups organizing events in our space! How great! This open mic is being formatted a little bit differently – time slots are only five minutes and it looks like they are going rapid fire from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm and the group welcomes poets, song writers, short skits, and more. We have a feeling time slots might even all be filled up, but you can email alchemistreview@gmail.com to inquire more.

This starts at Black Sheep tonight at 7:00 pm. We think it’s free? Find a facebook event for this one right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at what else is coming up in the near future.
