2-6 Black Sheep Roundtable Meeting Recap

tumblr_o25rpydCz91sj9f9fo1_1280

Last Saturday, on February 6th we hosted the first Black Sheep roundtable meeting that we have had in a while. The meeting was completely open to anyone wishing to attend, discuss ideas or just sit in and listen. A lot of great ideas came up at the meeting as far as things we can do to get more people out to shows and better utilize our space. Here are some key points that were brought up:

  • A “get involed” zine is currently in the works to better map out how our space works and things that you can do to get involved and help us run it.
  • Wednesday yard crews are going to start back up, lead by BJ Pearce. The first one of the year is happening March 2nd!
  • A lot was discussed on the topic of having non-musical events at Black Sheep. We are open to game nights, hang outs, theater/play performances or anything else! A game night has been scheduled for March 16th.
  • We also discussed the topic of show goers feeling unwelcome at our space. We talked about the idea of hanging up a sign that explains what a “safe space” means to us. And as Devon says, “Leave your dirt at home!”

For a more in-depth look at meeting notes, check out this long doc on facebook. We also agreed to have our roundtable meetings from here on out on a quarterly basis, meaning we will be having four each year. Our next meeting will be some point in late May or early June as we approach the big Dumb Fest 4-Ever. Check out our get involved page for more ways you can get involved with our community and notes on when the next meeting will be.

Here’s a pretty cool lookin’ show happening at Black Sheep on Monday, March 7th! How about it. For this show it looks like we have the band Rik & The Pigs coming all the way from Portland, Oregon. That band shares members of G.L.O.S.S. and Mongoloid, both who have played at Black Sheep in the past. Stream some of Rik & The Pigs’ music on the player below. Also on the bill we have Springfield grunge punk band SAP who just played a show here last night! How neat! Then opening things up it’s a… it’s a Livin’ Thing! Livin’ Thing is a new Springfield band featuring members of Soap Scum, King Worm, and GUSH. Oh yeah, we know the flier for this says Torch Runner will be playing but it looks like that will not actually be happening as we had a little mix up with dates.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep this spring.

Devin Hayes is a junior at Athens High School and he has gained local buzz when he was the opening act along with Kalin & Myles and Laura Marano for Austin Mahone at last year’s Illinois State Fair. Devin doesn’t have any Springfield live shows lineup up, but you can find more of him on his youtube page and twitter.

This one is coming up real quick, but it’s time for us to tell you about the next show happening over at The Radon Lounge, our sister cousin venue. This show is happening in just two days on Saturday, February 13th. Lucky for you it is a rare Saturday night with nothing going on at Black Sheep so you’ve got no excuse not to go. This show features the out of town group The Hollow Ends from St. Louis. Stream some of their music on the player below. Also on the show is solo act and Radon favorite Amy Benton. Up before that is the local trio The Deep Hollow to warm your sweet little hearts. And opening things up is a real treat- it’s the host of the new up and coming Springfield TV show- “The Studio Show,” Arlin Peebles himself!

The show over at The Radon Lounge starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. If you are unsure where The Radon Lounge is located, you can inquire for an address at theradonlounge@gmail.com. Also check out our shows page for a small list of shows happening in town outside of Black Sheep.

Some sort of mega-show is happening here at Black Sheep on Saturday, February 27th! This one might look a little like the “Winter Wreck” that happened last month except without the “wreck!” This one is being called “The Stereo Show” because it features new Springfield band “Stereo Static“. You can stream some of their music on the player below. There are seven whole bands on this show (wow). Two more of them include Fill In The Blank and Sammy & The Punk, who both also played the Winter Wreck here last month. They both rock. On the bottom half of the flier we have the local pop group- “The Locals.” There’s another band called “Stems” that we don’t know a whole lot about, and then we have a couple of other groups familiar to Black Sheep- Blind Social and The Incorporated!

This one will be kicking off a little earlier at 6:00 pm, and the cover charge is just $5. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good list of all the shows coming up at Black Sheep.

The Studio Show Episode 4: Michael Dunbar, Josh Catalano & The Dirty Thoughts

Screen Shot 2016-02-10 at 8.09.03 AM.png

It’s hard to believe it, but the new Springfield TV show focusing on artists and musicians in town- “The Studio Show” is already into it’s fourth episode. Episode #4 aired last week on Wednesday and it featured local artist Michael Dunbar and local band Josh Catalano & The Dirty Thoughts (pictured above). A new episode of The Studio show has been airing every other Wednesday, with the next one coming one week from today. You can check out episode #4 on the player below or right here.

Check out The Studio Show youtube channel to stay completely up to date on all of the episodes and other segments posted here and there. Plenty of more episodes are in the works, we have heard rumors of local bands SAP and Looming to look out for in the near future (shhhh!).

Videos: Epsom: “Dick 3 Blues”

Screen Shot 2016-02-09 at 8.10.47 AM.png

Springfield rock group Epsom have uploaded a new video of them performing at South Town Studio at a show late last year. The song is called “Dick 3 Blues,” and includes audio from the live show recorded by Brandon Carnes up in the studio. You can check out the video right here or embedded below. The video is also being submitted for Epsom to be featured as an artist on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” Concert series! How about that.

If you like what you hear, you can check out Epsom live at the Black Sheep Valentine’s Day Dance coming up this Sunday, February 14th along with bands Livin’ Thing, The Good Companions, and The Suction Cups. Check out more videos from Springfield bands on our vids/pics page.
