It’s been a minute since we’ve had an open mic at Black Sheep or Dumb Records – the last one at Dumb Records was all the way back in October now and it was a great success. We’ll be having an open mic inside the record store again before this month is over on Sunday, February 26th. Our open mics go from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm with 15 minute time slots throughout to be claimed by anyone who wants them to do whatever they chose to do! To claim a slot, head over to the facebook event and let us know which slot you chose to claim, or email us at blacksheepspringfield.com. Here is the schedule so far:

9:45-10:00 – Nighthawk’s DEBUT feature film
9:30-9:45 – (open)
9:15-9:30 – (open)
9:00-9:15 – (open)
8:45-9:00 – (open)
8:30-8:45 – (open)
8:15-8:30 – Jeff Prince
8:00-8:15 – Ian Winterbauer

Check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up in Southtown these next few months.

Oh, you KNOW that this show is going to be a hit. On Wednesday, March 8th in just a little less than a month LOOMING will be making a return to Black Sheep and Springfield for the first time since last August. They will be traveling on their way to play South by Southwest Festival in Texas. Be sure to catch the band play a rare show in their original hometown as they continue their wonderful journey and prepare for their second release on No Sleep Records. We also have a couple of touring punk bands from Michigan on this bill. Those include “Erik Nervous” and “Spodee Boy“. Stream some of Erik Nervous’s music on the player below. Opening things up for this is the big time rock band Livin’ Thing.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $10 (since we have 3 touring bands to take care of). Surely this will be a gig not to miss. Check out a facebook event for this one right here, and also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep later this year.

Illinois Times: “The Business of Spreading Music Success” (HISO)

cover_01.22577.widea.0.jpg

We are excited to see our friends over at HISO Music Entertainment on the cover of The Illinois Times this week – making two weeks in a row of groups on the front of the Times that Black Sheep has worked with in the past. Check out last week’s cover story on local poets right here. This week’s cover story is on HISO Music – a booking, consulting, and entertainment group of musicians and creative minds founded by Ayo Dele. HISO recently acquired their own space and has been hard at work with a recording studio, dance studio and more at their new location on Yale Blvd. From the article:

In a long brick building within a rented suite on Yale Boulevard in Springfield’s Harvard Park neighborhood, a quiet, yet profound revolution is underway. Here is the headquarters of HISO (pronounced high-so) Music Entertainment, a consulting company conceived by Springfield resident Ayo Abitogun to provide music business services to groups and individuals. The 26-year-old musician, rapper and singer-songwriter, also known professionally as Ayo Dele, is the inspirational leader of HISO, as well as the founder and CEO.

The organization formed two and half years ago when Ayo began building his own music career. While searching for professional members to add to his entertainment team, he discovered others searching for music business success based on his beliefs in positive thinking and avoiding the negative images and stereotypes found in certain forms of pop music today. As he shared his idea of engaging fellow music artists in constructive careers, the group around him expanded to include a trustworthy and enthusiastic team of dedicated friends and co-workers.

Somethings Can’t Be Ignored: Resident Genius / Howard Zinn Split

a3116744392_10.jpg

Springfield historic punk/music blog Some Things Can’t Be Ignored are at it again with their monthly post and featured Springfield release of the past. This time it’s a split album with Springfield punk band Resident Genius and a split they released with some of the works of American social activist Howard Zinn in 2005. Resident Genius features Jason Perry on guitar and vocals, who currently plays in groups The Seething Coast and Heptanes. Head on over to the Some Things Can’t Be Ignored blog to stream and download the release, which was originally on CD. From the blog:

A lot of time and effort was put into this release and I’d say that the end product is something that everyone involved can truly be proud of.  The statements made by both the band and Mr. Zinn on this split EP are short, yet powerful, and touch on issues that are just as important and relevant today as they were over a decade ago when this CD was originally released.  It’s like the old saying goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”  I hope that at some point in my lifetime I can throw on a record like this and the lyrical content be completely irrelevant to what’s currently going on in America.

You can find more out about the release from Jason on the actual post- including a breakdown of each song and lyrical content.
