As you know, last weekend was Record Store Day at Dumb Records (and also Recycled Records, the Elf Shelf, and millions of billions of other record stores around the globe). We got an unexpected visit from News Channel 20 in the store that day! The local news station interviewed corporate manager Brian Galecki (after he was finished playing with his giant orange ball head outside) about the importance of this special day. The segment aired all across the city of Springfield on the 10:00 news that magical night. Check that out right here online.

From the News Channel 20 website:

Dumb Records Owner, Brian Galecki, said records aren’t just about music but are a piece of art.

“It is about the music of course, a lot of people that have record players picking up albums,” said Galecki. “But it’s also a huge collectors aspect to it also, it also is a great way of highlight album art.

He says people of all ages came out to enjoy these classic vinyls.

There are no shows going on at Black Sheep tonight – howEVER there is an event going on on the University of Illinois campus in the WUIS building that we are once again teaming up with The Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault and WUIS for. It’s being called “Embrace Your Voice” – A communal expression of support for survivors of sexual assault. Tonight from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the WUIS building a reception and open mic will be held. From the event description:

NPR Illinois will host a letter-writing station throughout the month of April, which will lead to this reception. The public is asked to contribute “survivor love letters” – anonymously written and addressed in support of those who have survived sexual assault. This will result in a community art exhibition of the letters at the gallery in the NPR Illinois station.

Open mic will begin at 5:30 PM. Those who wish to read will be signed up on a first come basis. Email rotwe2@uis.edu for more information.

Find a facebook event for Embrace Your Voice right here. The event is free and of course all ages.

We have one huge whopper of a punk / hardcore show happening at Black Sheep this Saturday, April 28th and that’s going to be IT for this weekend for us. Better be there! For this show we have Pryss. For this show we also have… No Cash Value™ from Jacksonville, Illinois the future of punk in Central Illinois itself. There is a touring band. It looks like they are going right smack dab in the middle of the lineup and that is Die Young from Texas. Stream some of their music on the player below to find out what they are all about. This also is going to be the return of The Dry Look from Champaign / Urbana Illinois since their last time hear at Dumb Fest 5 last summer. Opening things up looks like is the second show of new Springfield hardcore band Graveswitcher.

All of that starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $7. Check out a facebook event right here. Also peek our upcoming shows page for a look at what else is coming up.

Tonight at Black Sheep! We have a three band weirdo punk show going on, and hopefully it will be the weirdest of weird. We have the interesting jazz-punk fusion group “Preening” coming all the way from Oakland California featuring members of familiar groups to our stage The Blues and Violence Creeps. Check out their newest music streaming on the player below. Also lined up is Springfield local rock group Livin’ Thing, who will be performing tonight as an eight-piece band. Opening things up is a rare performance by the experimental diary-reading project of Scott Faingold and Jason Perry called “The Heptanes.”

The show tonight starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5-7 sliding scale. Check out a facebook event right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up this spring / summer.

There is a show happening at Black Sheep tonight that we haven’t officially announced on this site yet! We are sorry! Thank you all who came out to Dumb Records at any point yesterday in support of Record Store Day- it was the store’s biggest day yet! Tonight we have a just short and sweet three-act show. The flier isn’t completely right either – Dee Dee Catpiss band will not be playing tonight. Instead we do have the return of Nectar from Champaign who just had a new album come out on Infinity Cat Records and was recorded last year right here in Springfield at Capital City Recording. Stream that new album on the player below. In addition to Nectar we have Springfield rockers Spell Breaker. Opening things up and the latest addition to the show is birthday boy Mike Butler. That’s right, it really is his birthday.

This show starts tonight at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a list of what else is coming up at Black Sheep this spring.

Saturday, April 21 at Black Sheep: Blood Soaked Boogie Bandits, No Solution, This Is A Stick Up, Lucy Furr, Foam Fangers

29060811_2045596945513953_1984040118571141076_o.jpg

Aside from Dumb Records gearing up what is projected to be the store’s biggest day ever of all time this Saturday, there is also a pretty stacked show going on that night at Black Sheep as well! There will be no reason not to be in Southtown at some point this Saturday! At the top of the bill for this show is the Lincoln and Central-Illinois based grimy punk / metal band “Blood Soaked Boogie Bandits“. We have No Solution on how to get rid of those pesky Blood Soaked Boogie Bandits. (No Solution is playing as well) (that’s almost certainly the wrong link to a different No Solution in France). But wait! This Is A Stick Up! From Decatur! They are not really ska, but more of a punk band! Also on the bill is “Lucy Furr“. Is Lucy a person or a full band? Looks like a full on band, and you can stream their music on the player below. Let’s see if you can open this show up with your Foam Fangers– new band from right here in Springfield.

All of this will be starting at Black Sheep on Saturday at 7:00 pm. Admission is $7. There will be a show in Dumb Records as part of Record Store Day with just three acts at 2:00 pm. (The store opens up at 8:00 am). Be sure to come an hour early, wait in line at 7:00 am, and stay for the music, and stay for the show at Black Sheep so that you are here for a full 16 hours straight. Find a facebook event right here. We’ve also updated our shows page a little bit!

Tonight! At Black Sheep there’s a nice little acoustic show happening for those of you looking for something to do. This one features a touring artist – Aaron James from Memphis, Tennessee. Stream some of Aaron’s music on the player below. We also have Aaron’s twin brother Alec James on the show. Just kidding, the two aren’t actually related. Alec is an acoustic singer / songwriter from here in Springfield. Kate Laine will be performing as well, and has been sounding better than ever since performing as a duo with The Studio Show’s Arlin Peebles! Last one we have on the bill is HECK aka Hannah Songer from Bloomington/Normal. We are not sure the order of performers for this one!

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this spring (we are currently working on updating the calendar).
