State Journal-Register: “Black Sheep Cafe Plans Move From South Town to Downtown”

Screen Shot 2018-11-24 at 11.35.02 AM.png

Just one day after our big announcement that we will be moving Dumb Records and Black Sheep downtown at the end of this year / beginning of 2019, local paper The State Journal-Register put us up on the front page yesterday, less than 24 hours after our big announcement. Owner Brian Galecki spoke to the SJ-R about the decision to move. From the article:

“I’ve talked to a lot of people (including former owner Kevin Bradford) and there hasn’t been anyone who didn’t think this was a good idea. We truly view this as a step in the right direction for us. For other show-goers and me, a move downtown feels right.”

Check out the full article online right here. We’re not sure if it’s easy to pick up yesterday’s paper… but you can find the physical article on the front page of yesterday’s paper if you are able to hunt one of those down.

We plan on announcing more details on the move as far as what we need help with, more final shows, and where we are moving to later on.

Happy weekend everybody, and thanks to all who came out to Black Friday at Dumb Records at any point yesterday. We can’t believe that we were left with a mere two records from our order of exclusive releases. Tonight there is a show at Black Sheep – and now that we’ve announced we are moving at the end of the year we can tell you that there are only a handful of shows left in our current space. Tonight we got local emo rockers Bottom Bracket at the top of the bill. Then what’s this? It’s another Vonne reunion show! Oh joy! The out of town act on this show is emo band “Jazz Cabbage” from the Chicago area. You can go ahead and stream their music on the player below. Opening things up is solo acoustic performer Dexter.

This show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep the rest of this year.

We are moving downtown.

An announcement on behalf of Black Sheep and Dumb Records:

Good morning and happy Thanksgiving. There’s been a lot going on behind the scenes at Black Sheep / Dumb Records for the past number of months and we’ve been gearing up for a huge announcement for quite some time. We are excited (and admittedly nervous) to share that after the year 2018 we will be starting a new chapter in our endeavors providing Springfield with an all ages show space and independent record store. At the end of this year Black Sheep and Dumb Records will be packing up everything at our South Grand & 11th Street home for 13+ years and moving downtown.

There has been a lot that has led us to decide over the past year or so that this is the right move for us, and we truly view this as a step in the right direction for us. We will share more info on a new location later on. For now we want everyone to know that the final shows in the 1320 South 11th Street of Black Sheep (since 2005) will be happening from now up until the end of the month of December. Also any bands that want to play at our current space one last time – contact us and we will do our best to get you on one last time. We will be keeping the shows calendar on our site updated. Dumb Records will remain open with our regular operating hours up until Sunday, December 16th being the store’s last day in operation at the current location and there will be sales in the store from now until close.

There may be some changes with us opening a new space downtown but our goals of providing Springfield with a space where all different people and genres can come together and perform music / art will very much be the same. We will need as much help and support with this move as we can get. We would also love to see each and every one of you who have supported us over the years at these final shows.

Today is about being thankful. We are extremely grateful and thankful for the community in Springfield that has supported us in the past and continues to do so. We would also like to thank our landlord George Sinclair for everything he’s done. Saying goodbye to a space where thousands of shows have been held is not easy. However, it is important to realize it’s not about the space or the building we are in – Black Sheep isn’t just a building – it’s about the community and the dedicated volunteers that have kept us going for the past 13+ years and will continue to keep us going into the future.

Eggman: “Cube Zero”

a3983351316_10.jpg

This past weekend at the annual Black Sheep Band Lotto a complete shock to us all was the release of a limited run of 25 lathe cut records from band #3, going by the name “EGGMAN”. Tonight we are bringing you the recordings of EGGMAN from that lathe cut record, so even all of you who weren’t lucky enough to pick up this rare piece of Springfield music history can still be fortunate enough to get to listen to the Eggman’s recordings. Stream EGGMAN’S release “Cube Zero” on the player below. There are two tracks for each side of the late cut, but five songs are there total. Also head over to Eggman’s bandcamp page to download the release at your own price.

Eggman does not have any more shows lined up. Will Springfield ever see another Eggman performance? This release does in fact count towards our 2018 list of Springfield releases in our ultimate Springfield album archive.

Shows, shows, shows! And more shows! Shows, shows! Here is the last show announcement we have for you for a show happening in November – on the last day on Friday, November 30th. It’s mostly an all local lineup of five groups. We have the return of No Cash Value, the Jacksonville punk group that have taken a break for a minute it looks like. We also have The Telephone Junkies, the perfect indie/alternative soundtrack band to your fall in Springfield. We have “Loverboard” a band from… the Peoria area? Is this true? Also a rare performance by Springfield duo The Heptanes! And opening things up is a solo project called Flunkie.

This show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here.

December 15th at Black Sheep: PARK, Earth Witch, Bottom Bracket, Nectar, Kate Laine, Sadface Killer

1.jpg

The time has come for us to announce a really really really really really really big show happening next month on Saturday, December 15th. A show that will surely pack the inside of Black Sheep, heck, maybe even sell out!? Have you listened to PARK? Popular emo band primarily active in Springfield from 1996-2007, then reunited in 2013 and have released a 10″ record and performed a handful of big shows since then. Park will be performing on the Black Sheep stage once again for this show, and we are happy to have them. We are also excited to welcome the return of Earth Witch – a band not as active in our area due to Nathan Landolt of Error Records / Hand of Death Records moving away to North Carolina a few years back. Stream Earth Witch’s newest album on the player below. Right in the middle of the lineup is Springfield emo band Bottom Bracket. More friends from Champaign are coming with the band Nectar. Before that is a performance by indie artist Kate Laine. And opening things up is Sadface Killer, emo from the Peoria area. Wow.

Those are a lot of bands. Because of all of those bands, this show will start at 6:30 pm on the dot. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. You can purchase tickets inside of Dumb Records or online right here. Find a facebook event for this mega-gig right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a list of shows coming up at Black Sheep the rest of this year.

Then the next day on Saturday, November 24th there is this show going on at Black Sheep. What’ve we got… we got local emo rockers Bottom Bracket at the top of the bill. Then what’s this? It’s another Vonne reunion show! Oh joy! The out of town act on this show is emo band “Jazz Cabbage” from the Chicago area. You can go ahead and stream their music on the player below. No Cash Value: “No Cash Value”

We are definitely late to the game on sharing this release by Jacksonville punk band No Cash Value – one of the last sessions to be recorded at Southtown Sound with Mike Butler. Back at the beginning of September the band released this eight-song self-titled group of songs. You can find them streaming on the player below. Also head over to the band’s bandcamp page to download the album at your own price.

No Cash Value actually do have a show coming up! It’s been a minute. The band will be performing at Black Sheep at the end of this month on November 30th. More info on that show can be found right here, we’ll also have a proper announcement up for that one soon.

We are still working on adding to that ultimate Springfield album archive to catch up with 2018 as well!

Tonight on tour the band Devil’s Den from Kansas City, Missouri is coming. You can stream their music on the player below. Devil’s Den will be on tour with other hardcore group Outcast from Kentucky. Also on this show we’ve got two locals. We have Prowess, who just recorded new material in some fancy studio somewhere. Opening things up we have Final Order.

This show will start tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. Admission is $7. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page, which we are working on updating now!

Foot is actually performing at Dumb Records this upcoming Friday for Black Friday Record Store Day! That show starts at 7:00 pm inside the record store and is free. More info on that right here.

We also added this release to our list of 2018 releases in our Springfield album archive. We are adding to the list and gearing up for our annual Best of Springfield Music 2018 poll soon!
