IMG_8794.jpg

Oh yeah, what’s up we got a new issue of Activator Magazine in our store *available for free*. In fact, we’ve already gone through one batch of these real quick and have already been re-stocked! On this month’s cover featured is a handful of Central Illinois hip hop artists including TaQsem, T-Roni, Kid Ziggy, Pappa Luke, and Otto Sans. Ken No, columnist of Activator, and host of Hiphophumpday on 88.3 WQNA is also featured on the cover, and Ken put together the featured story recapping the current state of hip hop in the 217 area listing off a lot of the active players.

We are also excited because there is an exclusive interview with Shonen Knife from Japan, who will be playing here in Springfield at Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s on September 30th. In addition to that there are album reviews, local and St. Louis show calendars, interviews with Rather Dashing, Retirement Party, Zzo, and much much more. This is the biggest issue of Activator to date!

Come pick up a copy for free at Dumb Records (we are open pretty much all day every day), or other local businesses around town.

New Band Pages: Timothy Donavan Russell

It’s about time we finally did this – we got a new band page set up for local solo musican and sound artist Timothy Donavan Russell on our site, adding it to the number of active band pages we have going. Timothy has been making music since 1989, 30 years (wow). He is a member of The Pharmacy Gallery which is also downtown. You can check out his page and stream some music right here. We aren’t sure on any live performances Timothy has lined up, but he is usually involved with upcoming Pharmacy events which happen on a pretty regular basis and you can follow along with on their facebook page right here.

That brings us to a total of 44 current active band pages we have up on our site (some of them need to be moved to “past bands” though, we know). Check out all of those right here. Do you play in a band or are a solo musician here in town playing original music? Get in touch with us at dumbrecs@gmail.com and we will work with you to set something up!

Tonight at Dumb Records: Navel (Japan), Teenage Bigfoot, Starter Jackets, Sadface Killer

Tonight! We’ve got a show going on, and it’s this one that features a *surprise* international band. Who is that band? That band is Navel from Japan, a pop punk band that has been around since the 1990’s rockin’ it in Japan on Bloated Kat Records. Check out their music streaming on the player below. They are touring with a band called Teenage Bigfoot from Philadelphia. There have been some slight changes to this lineup as well since it was originally announced as far as local bands go. Bottom Bracket is no longer playing (sorry), but Starter Jackets still is. Opening things up is the Peoria/Springfield emo band Sadface Killer.

The show tonight kicks off at 7:00 pm and it’s a $10 show, so remember to ask your parents for a few extra bucks. Find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up in the near future.

Tony Colantino: “Extradimensional”

69378607_10100392999697897_2618385275377680384_o.jpg

Good morning and happy Sunday. Happy September 1st! This morning we bring you some brand new material here, it’s a brand new album from Springfield solo artist Tony Colantino. The album is called Extradimensional and it’s a few places online although unfortunately none of the usual places that we can embed players on our site. Let’s take a look at where it’s at…

CD Baby right here.
Spotify right here.
Amazon right here.
Looks like it was on Soundcloud but now it’s gone, dang it!!!

When I started the songs that would become Extradimensional in late 2017, I was relatively fresh out of a project with a similar concept. It was an instrumental space-rock record titled Space Drone, comprised of short songs featuring only multi-tracked electric guitar. Extradimensional took this concept and expanded it by lengthening the songs, adding keys, drum machines, and effects beyond the guitar-pedals-amp set-up. With these additional elements came a heightened sense of cinematic grandeur and sonic expanses. Desolation, uncharted territories, and harsh realms meet mental anguish, longing, and transcendence over the course of nine songs in 52 minutes.

That’s a quote from Tony. Tony doesn’t have any live performances lined up. We are adding this one to our Springfield album archive page of course, bringing us to 41 releases featured this year and 467 total.
