cloudrat

Looks like that on Saturday, December 13th Black Sheep has this monster of a hardcore show lined up and ready to attack. Get ready for some heavy stuff. For this show we have grind band Cloud Rat coming from Michigan and doing a collaboration set with other band Plagues. You can check out some of Cloud Rat’s music streaming below. The bands will be on tour with heavy sludge band Disrotted from Chicago. Then we have a performance by Springfield’s own wacky punk band Teen Freak. Also lined up and also from Chicago is The Wrong, who are coming back and making up for a show that they dropped here back in October. We are excited to have them. Opening this show up is a brand new Springfield hardcore band going by the name Diaper Rash. Who is in this band? No one knows.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and the door charge to support the touring acts is anywhere between $5 and $7 (we’ll let you pick). You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page where you can find a complete list of everything coming up in Southtown.

There are a LOT of exciting things going on in and around Southtown today. Almost TOO many things for us to fit into one post, but we are going to try anyway. There are a total of THREE big events happening around Southtown in three different locations, and we are going to go over each one.

The first is the first ever Southtown Record Fair. This is happening today from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm inside Dumb Records and Black Sheep. Black Sheep will be filled with tables set up by different stores and distributers from all over the area. Let’s look at the list of those that will be setting up at the fair:

Acid Kat Zine (St. Louis based label and zine)
Don’t Touch My Records (St. Louis based label)
Error Records (Champaign/Urbana label and record store)
The Garbage Shop (Taylorville label)
Guard (Springfield/Milwaukee/Kansas City based label)

The third and final event is this killer show happening at Black Sheep at 7:00 pm, normal show time. For this show we have Masked Intruder returning from Madison, Wisconsin to play for us all. You may remember the last time Masked Intruder came through and played on the ramp of Skank Skates. If case you forgot, we have a player with some of Masked Intruder’s music embedded below. This time around Masked Intruder will be playing with popular Springfield punk band, The Timmys. We also have Inner Outlines, who were guests on The Black Sheep Radio Show yesterday. Opening things up is the experimental-jam band Flamingo from Jacksonville, Illinois. The show will start right at 7:00 pm and admission for this one is $8. The Illinois Times: “Punk Paradise In Southtown”

IMG_2013

Many of you have been excited today (aside from all the snow) about a feature story in this week’s issue of The Illinois Times about Southtown and all of the businesses and people that make it a creative hub of Springfield. Pictured on the front of The Illinois Times (above) is Brandon Carnes of South Town Studio. The actual article spans five pages and covers much of what is going on inside Southtown including Dumb Records, The Black Sheep, Skank Skates, Boof City Skate Shop, South Town Studio, Clay’s Popeye’s Barbeque, and even George’s gardening projects. From the article:

On a typical Wednesday evening in Southtown, one might enter through the front door of Dumb Records (1107 S. Grand Ave.) and pass young people (leather, tattoos and piercings optional, but prevalent) talking and casually perusing the LP, 45, cassette, CD and t-shirt stock or possibly engaging in a game of foosball. The music choices on the store speakers here can be eclectic – recent visits have featured selections from Slayer and the Mamas & the Papas. The atmosphere is casual but strangely energized.

Exiting Dumb Records through the back door will land you in an unpaved parking lot, and if there is a concert at Black Sheep that night it will more than likely be abuzz with even more young people – band members might be unloading equipment from vans or cars while other kids talk, smoke or just goof around. Music is often in the air, wafting from Southtown Recording studios, housed in the building directly behind Dumb Records, where proprietor and engineer Brandon Carnes offers practice space to local combos between recording sessions. He has recorded projects for more than 30 bands since opening there in February.

Check out the article online right here, which also features a live video of the band Looming playing at Black Sheep earlier this month on November 5th. You can also pick up a physical copy of The Illinois Times between now and next Thursday at various local businesses around Springfield. For those of you more interested in checking out some things that Southtown has to offer, many of the buildings here are going to be active during our first ever South Town Record Fair coming up this Saturday.

On Saturday, December 6th this year we have a show with a killer lineup made to get us through the winter months. For this show we have Dan Vapid & The Cheats coming to Chicago to play at Black Sheep. For those of you unfamiliar with Dan Vapid, he has played in punk bands for years including Screeching Weasel, Riverdales, The Methadones, Sludgeworth, The Mopes, and Noise By Numbers. Stream some music from Dan Vapid & The Cheats on the player below. Also coming from Chicago for this show will be Death And Memphis. For Springfield bands we have Looming lined up to play, which should be a real treat. We also have a performance by Springfield’s own Hospital Job, which will be their first local show since returning from The Fest in Gainesville last month. To top the show off it looks like The Seething Coast will be opening things up with a good start.

This show is going to start right at 7:00 pm and admission is $7. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page where you can have a look at everything else coming up in South Town.

The Pharmacy Gallery & Art Space Launches New Location, “GoFundMe” Campaign

2424893_1415422264.5937

Springfield art space and gallery, The Pharmacy (formerly located on South Grand Ave west of Black Sheep), have successfully moved their location and are launching a “GoFundMe” campaign to fund the new space and get the ball rolling. The new Pharmacy is located at 711 South 5th Street ” nestled amid the grounds of Jack Stoldt Auto Service Center (former Widow at Windsor location)”. From the GoFundMe page:

Recently, The Pharmacy underwent a very exciting change. A wonderful opportunity knocked on our door, so we picked up our studios, along with all of their messily inventive entailments and moved our home, our Gallery on down the road. Fortunately, this move was just a hop, skip, and a jump to a great location at the beginning outskirts of Downtown Springfield.

While this location grants you a warm welcome as you enter this historically infamous downtown, it also invites you to come and discover what this city has artistically cultivated and inspired in its residents.

You can find the link to the GoFundMe campaign where you can donate right here. There are also incentives for donating certain amounts such as chances to be entered into monthly raffles. The Pharmacy artists will also be teaming up with Springfield theater and arts space The Legacy Theater this weekend (November 13th, 14th, and 15th) for a film showing and art gallery for The Wizard of Oz. More info on that can be found right here.

Photos and Videos From Hobgob 2014 at Donnie’s Homespun

It looks like NIL8’s annual Hobgoblinspookadelic show this year was a total blast- it happened on Halloween night at Donnie’s Homespun in downtown Springfield. Black Sheep has hosted Hobgob a recent years in a row, but this year’s event at Donnie’s was a great way to mix things up and we’ve got the photos to prove it. Bands that played included King Worm, Bad Banshee, The Timmys, The Misfarts, and NIL8. There were also costume contests, stand up comedy, and all sorts of other crazy side-performances. Check out some of those photos above and below, or head to the AJWF Photography page on facebook, or our Springfield shows album on flickr. You can also catch a video of a (very disturbing) King Worm set from that night below. Check out another video of The Misfarts from that night right here.
