New Feature: FAQs

Here at blacksheepspringfield.com we are always trying to update and improve our website.  Today we are bringing you a brand new feature, and that is the new FAQ (frequently asked questions) section!  http://blacksheepspringfield.com/faq/  There will always be a link to this new section in the pages tabs under the website banner.

We have compiled the list of questions that we are commonly getting asked through email, facebook, and at shows.  If you have any ideas for other questions that could be featured in this feature, then send them to blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com.

Introducing the “Old Southtown Neighborhood Association”

For the past few weeks, a group of business owners from the Southtown neighborhood including some of us representing Black Sheep have gotten together to form an official association. With so many positive changes in the last month, George Sinclair of Skank Skates thought it was time to form this organization.

Since 2004, the area has been in the running for federal funded grants. The group of businesses thought it was an appropriate time fight harder for some of this money. It would be used to aid in many of the on going neighborhood renovation projects; like new lights, better sidewalks, and renovation of abandoned spaces.

The group has been meeting up frequently, but eventually plans to meet once a month. As a member of the association, we are very excited about the future of Southtown and the many great things the neighborhood holds.

Though the group is in their infancy, there are many plans for growth in the near future. Until then, we will be posting about the updates (and how you can get involved) when any arrive. You can keep up to date with the Old Southtown Revival Facebook page as well.

The second part is located HERE, and the first part is HERE. Be sure to tune in next week on 970 AM between 3pm and 7pm to hear the third part.

Deep Clean RECAP!

Our one-day deep clean at Black Sheep ended up turning into a week’s worth of projects for a lot of hard working and dedicated volunteers.  A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us this past week, especially Tim and George.  Without all of your help nothing would have ever gotten done.

To those of you who have not seen Black Sheep’s new look, we have some pictures.  We also have a list of what all was done during the deep clean.

More pictures of the deep clean can be seen in our Black Sheep flickr album.

  • The drop ceiling in the back of the main room was removed, opening up a lot of ceiling space.
  • Peeling paint was scraped from the ceiling and many cobwebs were cleared.
  • Wooden support beams were strengthened and some were removed.
  • The top ledge at the front of the main room was cleaned out.
  • Lights were thoroughly cleaned.
  • Temporary lights were set up highlighting the ceiling.
  • A bathroom doorknob was installed.
  • The backdoor was fixed.
  • The “merch” wall in the back room was scraped, painted, and primed.
  • We have a cork board set up in the back of the main room for the Black Sheep “store”.
  • A new toilet seat was installed.

A lot was done, but by no means are we done improving our space.  We will continue to take on new projects and do what we can with the tools and resources we have.  The stage is one of many projects we would like to complete later on.  If you would like to donate your time to work on projects inside Black Sheep you can get ahold of Kevin or email blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and we will find a good time for you to come in and work.  If you have any ideas for new projects we could take on in or outside of our interior space then you should come to our next roundtable meeting, which is Sunday, September 16th at 3:00.

Black Sheep Tonight: Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship, And God Said Dance, Lovecow

Tonight we have our first show since we have started making some changes to the inside of our venue.  Come out and dance!  Coming from the St. Louis area is the return of Super Fun Yeah Yeah Rocketship, which is now a two-person project.  Then we also have the return of And God Said Dance, having their first performance since Black Sheep Fest 2011.  And then there is the all-new, all-acoustic Lovecow playing great folk punk.  The show will start at 7:00 pm and is $5.  Be sure to check out our other upcoming shows here.

Revolution Autumn

From Kevin:

Hey everybody!  Things are getting exciting around the Black Sheep this fall!  We  are initiating some much needed projects to improve our humble little abode.  One of the major undertakings we are doing is building a new and better stage!  We are determined to do something awesome and we need your help.  Everything we ever had was built by our community and this is no exception.  So if you are down to see the Sheep get cooler stuff and have some rad shows, please help us by contributing to our stage fund.  We need approximately 400 dollars to make it happen, and since we operate by little to nothing of a budget we greatly appreciate any contribution.  I am excited about the future of Black Sheep and I hope you are too.  Thank you for caring and thinking about us.

The times and seasons are changing.
New music appears.
A revolution is happening

Much Love,
Kevin

The Fall is upon us and many great things are coming. We are doing some renovations to our space and are planning our new stage. We have plans to put in better stage lighting, and redo all of our sound. To make these things possible, we need YOU. Your support of Black Sheep is becoming increasingly important during this Revolution Autumn.

The first expensive part of these changes is the construction of the new stage. To help fund that, we set up a donation spot on our Big Cartel. Please feel free to donate:

We will also have a special donation box set up at Black Sheep for those of you interested in donating.  Or you can hand donations directly to Kevin.  Together we can get this new stage built!

Photos: Patchwork 2012

Yes, that is really the actor Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face) holding Patchwork 2012.
Robbie Kording, coordinator of Springfield Music Compilation Patchwork 2012 and singer of The Timmys has put together a photo album of various people and animals and their new Patchwork 2012 CDs.  We have gotten the pictures together into one album on our flickr, which you can find here.  Patchwork 2012 was released earlier this summer and is a music compilation featuring songs from 20 different Springfield bands.  The compilation can be purchased in our store, but those of you willing to wait a little while longer will be able to download the compilation for free soon from Some Things Can’t Be Ignored.

Deep Clean: pre-RECAP!

Surprise!  After all these years we now have a doorknob for our bathroom door!

The “Deep Clean” yesterday went a little bit deeper then we had initially planned.  Those of us there did get pretty ambitious and took on some big projects that will benefit us greatly in the long run.  For now though, Black Sheep is somewhat under construction.  Those of you planning on going to the show Saturday night will probably notice a few changes.  Since we are not completely finished with what we are doing, we will leave all that has been done a surprise until later this weekend.
