DUMB FEST at Black Sheep and Skank Skates on June 15th

Today we bring you news of something very big happening at Black Sheep this summer. Is it Black Sheep Fest? No, but it’s close. We actually will be putting on two big festivals this summer. We will have Black Sheep fest on August 3rd this year in the later summer. But also happening this summer on Saturday, June 15th will be DUMB FEST.

What is DUMB FEST? The idea came about because every summer we have Black Sheep fest where we have bands all local to Springfield play one giant show together. However, we didn’t really have a fest where we can have bands from towns outside of Springfield play along with some bigger national touring acts. That is where DUMB FEST comes in! DUMB FEST will still have plenty of your favorite local bands but it will also feature some bands from surrounding Central Illinois cities and also a few other surprises. When picking out bands to play this fest we focused mainly on the punk and hardcore genres that Black Sheep was founded on, but we also ended up with a pretty wide range of types of bands. Why is it called DUMB FEST? We are not sure, it was Kevin’s idea. And here’s a message from Kevin:

Everybody here at Black Sheep is very excited to host a regional fest. We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of people from all over the area come out, and we are excited to see some great music. This is a whole new tradition we are kicking off and we are stoked to say the least! Stay tuned!

There will be around 20 bands playing DUMB FEST, all have already confirmed. Oh yeah, did we mention that half of the bands will be playing next door on the ramp of Skank Skates? We plan on announcing all 20 bands with four separate announcements from now until the end of this month. Today we bring you the first announcement with five bands that are playing. Ready? Here they are…

ANGRY GODS from Chicago (featuring members of Harps of Tartarus and Scouts Honor)
SAY SOMETHING local to Springfield (featuring members of Don’t Mess With Winkie)
HORRIBLE THINGS from Champaign (featuring members of Hospital Job)
TRAUMA HARNESS from Belleville (featuring members of Egg Chef and Lumpy & The Dumpers)

3/27 at BXS: John Davey, Picardy III, Big Storm

jdp3It’s time to get acoustic-y and rock-y once again. Our long time pal John Davey is on tour with Austin, TX’s Picardy III. Each of this team put their unique spin on “music.” To round out Big Storm, will be playing “Break Out” for 30 minutes. This will be one not to miss.One more band is going to be added to this show, and will be announced accordingly.

Roundtable Recap / Big Announcement Tomorrow

Off With Their Heads had to drop the show due to singer Ryan losing his voice, but the show was still the most attended we’ve had since Black Sheep Fest. Plenty of stage dives and circle pits were had by all! We will be updating you all soon with some pictures of the show as soon as we track them down.

On Sunday we met at Black Sheep to get ready for the show. We did a little bit of spring cleaning. In the following Black Sheep roundtable meetings we will probably be focusing hard on making sure everything goes great for us this summer. We are in some exciting times and this summer is going to be more exciting than ever.

Speaking of exciting things and summer, we have a big announcement for all of you tomorrow. Keep an eye and ear out on the site until then!

Tonight at Black Sheep: Teenage Bottlerocket, Off With Their Heads, The Timmys, Hospital Job

Teenage_BottlerocketFINALWhoa! THE BIG ONE is finally here! Teenage Bottlerocket will be playing. They are a national touring punk band from Laramie, Wyoming. Then we have Off With Their Heads from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Off With Their Heads also has a new album out tomorrow! The two touring bands will be joined by local support from Springfield classic punk band The Timmys. Also playing is Hospital Job, featuring Luke McNeil of The Copyrights! What a lineup!

The show tonight starts at 7:00 pm and doors are at 6:30. Admission is $10 unless you have already bought a ticket. If you bought a ticket online just bring a photo ID and we will have your name on a list that we can cross off at the door. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Off With Their Heads Streaming “Home”

National touring act Off With Their Heads are now streaming their new album Home on youtube. Home is the band’s third studio album and is set to be officially released on Tuesday (March 12th). Why are we telling you this? Because Off With Their Heads will be playing Black Sheep TOMORROW NIGHT along with Teenage Bottlerocket, The Timmys, and Hospital Job! Did you also know that today is the last day to pre-order tickets for the Teenage Bottlerocket/Off With Their Heads show? You can do that online today up until midnight right here. Tickets are $8 beforehand and will be $10 at the door. If you would like to buy tickets today at Black Sheep we will be having a roundtable meeting at 5:00 where tickets will be available. Black Sheep Roundtable Meeting Tomorrow

Hi! It has been a few weeks since we had our last Black Sheep roundtable meeting. I hope you all are ready for another one!

Tomorrow we will be meeting at 5:00 pm at Black Sheep (not the HARM HOUSE). We will be doing some big planning for the Teenage Bottlerocket/Off With Their Heads show (happening Monday), cleaning up the inside of the venue, and also discussing some big plans for the summer. Everyone and anyone is welcome to come out! Even if you don’t have anything to say, feel free to join us!

Our Lady Announce “Vessels” 7″

OurLadycover7Today we bring you some very exciting news from Springfield favorites Our Lady. Sometime in the early summer Our Lady will be putting out a brand new 7″ through Mind Over Matter Records! The new 7″ will be called Vessels. You can check out the cover for the 7″, designed by Brian Galecki and Benny Dewitt above. From the label’s website:

Springfield, Il emo-rock quintet Our Lady are gearing up for a big year. Following their 2011 release ‘Scales’, they have put out several short but sweet demos. With each effort they seem to peel back another layer, blending driving and eventful songs with angsty yet articulate lyrics. This time, we have the privilege of helping out an ambitious group with putting out yet another awesome 7 inch release set for summer 2013.

Their new material explores a broad dynamic and emotional range, taking listeners through peaks and valleys carved of delicate verses and hard hitting, overdriven choruses. Presently, they are planning an extensive April tour and working on material for a full length. As Our Lady wrap up their full length and continue to expand their reach, they are sure to have an exciting 2013 and beyond! Keep your eyes peeled for further updates regarding the newest 7 inch as well as tour plans!

Black Sheep Radio Tomorrow: Hospital Job, Jess Knight

image_1362616708179457Tomorrow afternoon Black Sheep Radio is out of the hot tub and back into the hot seats to talk with local punk band Hospital Job. The band will be talking about their latest LP Downer Downer Downer and also their show coming up on Monday (March 11th) with Teenage Bottlerocket and Off With Their Heads at Black Sheep. Also in the studio will be Jess Knight! Jess has a show coming up at the HARM HOUSE on March 16th along with Blood Red, Mother Leopard, and Emperor Norton.

The radio show starts tomorrow (Friday) at 4:00 pm and goes until 6:00 pm. You can listen on 88.3 WQNA fm or also head over to wqna.org to listen online. Did you miss some old episodes of Black Sheep Radio? Well we have a few you can stream and download on our radio page!

 

Obi-Wan To Release “Episode VI: Return of the Red Eyes” at Black Sheep on April 6th

601564_10200547013100864_496610739_nLocal ska-punk band Obi-Wan Kanblo Mi have requested that you all mark one month from today: Saturday, April 6th in your calendars because they will be releasing their new EP “Episode VI: Return of the Red Eyes” on that day. There will be a release show at Black Sheep. Also playing the show will be Must Build Jacuzzi from the Peoria area. From the Obi-Wan’s facebook last week:

We’ve finished recording the new EP, we just have to get it mixed and we’ll be ready to let you hear it! Then we’ll play that pesky Release party in April.

Anyone interested in playing it? We’ve messaged a few bands, but you never know what kind of line up you can throw together if you just ask.
