August 30th at Black Sheep: Cooshit, Scott Blacula, Habilis Riccardo

970290_4405501634449_168233021_nHere at Black Sheep, it has been quite a while since we have had a rap show! For those of you who were at The Battle of the Bands earlier this month, you may have caught a sneak peak of acts from a new rap recording project called “The Cage” from across South Grand. Today we are announcing a rap/mixed genre show coming up at the end of August! This show is happening on Friday, August 30th. It will feature the rap project Cooshit and is being called the Cooshit SuperDuperDopeDank Show! In the middle of the show we have grind/metal band Scott Blacula, who we think lost a battle to Emperor Norton at Black Sheep Fest last weekend. Opening the show up is another rap project going by the name Habilis Riccardo. The flier says that there will be more surprises including a “free shirt giveaway”, “cooking contest?!?”, and “free candy”?!? Sounds like a lot of fun!

The show kicks off at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event to the show right here. Also don’t forget to check our shows page for other shows that are coming up at Black Sheep in August!

Photos: Black Sheep Fest 2013

This past weekend was a success on many levels for Black Sheep and Springfield music as a whole. Great times were had by all, and we saw many bands put on some fantastic sets. We saw lots of new faces, a few old ones, and there were also plenty of surprises. Here is what Black Sheep owner Kevin Bradford had to say:

The fest yesterday was great. Thank you to everyone involved. Truth be told I did not think Black Sheep would be here for 8 years, but I sincerely appreciate everyone who has supported it. As long as you got something good from us, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been around 8 minutes or eight years.

And now for the pictures! We have about one hundred pictures gathered from Black Sheep Fest, and they are still coming in! You can check out a few of those photos below, or head over to our Black Sheep Fest 2013 Flickr set.

New Band Pages: Aporia, Blank Gravestone, Good Times

Screen shot 2013-07-25 at 9.10.04 AMToday we are bringing you not one, not two, but THREE brand new band pages for three new Springfield bands. Our list of current Springfield bands keeps growing, and growing, and growing.

Our first page is for one of the main new harsh noise projects in this gigantic surge of noise that we have been recently seeing in Springfield and that is Aporia! Aporia features Jeff Brown of And God Said Dance. On the new Aporia page you can check out a bio and find links to music/noise of the project. Aporia will also be playing next at Black Sheep on Monday, August 5th along with Pound For Pound, Scott Blacula, Primitive Man, and Reproacher.

The next page is for a band that played their very first show at the Black Sheep Battle of the Bands earlier this month. They are called Blank Gravestone! On their page you can find more about them, and also see a video of them playing their first show at the battle of the bands. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for Blank Gravestone shows at Black Sheep in the near future.

The third page is for a new solo acoustic project of Battalion frontman Clint Kesinger. Clint calls his new project “Good Times” and you can check out his new page here. You might find the music of Good Times to be a little different than that of Battalion. On the page you can stream his new self-titled EP and read more about how the project came to be.

You can check out any of the 50-something band pages we have put together for current Springfield bands right here. Do you play in a band from Springfield  that is not on our list yet? We would love to hear from you! Shoot us an email at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and we will work with you to set one up!

The Illinois Times: “Citizen Rockers”

_MG_6541For those of you who are up-to date on the weekly Springfield publication, The Illinois Times, you may have seen the lengthy article on Springfield alternative/punk band The Seething Coast. They even made the front page! The Seething Coast has been a band since 2007, and features members of Resident Genius, NIL8, and The Favored Nations. This summer they have been active recording material and they have come out with two new releases, one EP and one full length album recorded with help from Steve Albini and Brandon Carnes. You can find the full article here, or also the beginning of it below.

Playing in a rock and roll band is never a casual proposition. Investments of time and money for rehearsal and equipment can be sizable, while financial rewards are often slow to arrive, if they appear at all. If your band writes and plays its own original songs, this can sometimes seem like an uphill battle, if not a quixotic, ultimately pointless endeavor. Why not just work up a set of crowd-pleasing cover songs and save yourself some aggravation?

“For a short while I did the cover band thing and that is a drag,” says veteran Springfield musician Damon Soper, drummer for punk-informed local combo The Seething Coast. “If you’re in a cover band, you’re only doing it for money.” While Soper and his bandmates aren’t exactly averse to making money, financial gain is far from The Seething Coast’s primary goal. Personal expression is closer to the mark. “It’s like a painter who paints in his basement,” says Soper. “It doesn’t do any good if the paintings don’t leave the basement – you wanna get ’em to an art show so people can give you feedback. The same goes for music.”

After slugging away on the local scene since early 2007, things are starting to come together for The Seething Coast (named after a song by indie rock stalwarts The Mountain Goats). The four-piece Springfield band is on the eve of simultaneously releasing two brand new records: Olympia, a six-song EP, was recorded and mixed earlier this year at Electrical Audio in Chicago, during a single all-day session with legendary independent sound engineer Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page); in contrast, the full-length We Would Have Saved You If We Could is the result of several frustrating years of fits and starts, recorded in a series of Springfield-area studios.

Check out the full article on the Seething Coast on this week’s issue of the Illinois Times or online right here. We are also bringing you a stream of both of The Seething Coast’s new releases! The first is an EP recorded by Steve Albini in Chicago. It is called Olympia and features artwork by Brian Galecki of Soap Scum. The second is a full-length album that has been in the works for a few years. Artwork for that was done by Springfield’s own Rachel Jennings. The Seething Coast will also be playing at Black Sheep on August 11th along with Mildred and The Greek Favourites.

New Springfield Noise

sfnc

Recently Springfield has been overtaken with a great influx of noisey projects. Eric Rogers of The Luzhin Defense has tried his hand at some far less melodic and way harsher electronic musings with his new project Block Shempe. The tracks are short, harsh, and right to the point.

Meanwhile a new noise project called Gazeebo has a new collection of tracks entitled “Forever”, as well as a previously released wall noise track. “Forever” features shorter songs that are just as angry.

Finally, IAMIAM, a noise project featuring Austin Connelly of Montagh, has released a few new songs recently. Most recently exposed to the world is a collaboration with Borealis (Mario Cannamela of Soap Scum), and is a thickly layered track with a great deal of guitar tricks and noisey bits. Also two singles have recently been released and there is talk of a new album coming off the belt soon! Be sure to check out all of these and come out to the show on August 21st to see IAMIAM and Gazeebo open up the show!
