10-5 Roundtable Recap

On Saturday a few of us met at Black Sheep and had another one of our roundtable meetings. We met up with and talked to Skank Skates owner George Sinclair to discuss a few things, and that was followed by painting some serious art and doing some serious flyering for upcoming shows around town. For those of you who weren’t at the meeting here is what you missed:

– We discussed some possibilities of what could become of some open spaces around South Town.
– We put up fliers.
– We painted.
– We are also still looking on leads for a roofing contractor so that we can figure out our heating and cooling situation for this winter. If you know of anybody that would be able to help us please don’t hesitate to get ahold of us at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com.

Tonight at The Radon Lounge: Families, Kevin Schlereth, Bear Grass, Lyssa Barth

You may have noticed that we do not have any shows this weekend at Black Sheep. This is very sad. We do have plenty of shows lined up though (our next one being a last minute show on Thursday, October 10th). If you are still looking to get your Springfield show fix this weekend there still is this cool show happening tonight at Springfield basement/house venue The Radon Lounge. It features the three-piece folk band Families from Chicago. Before them there will be a performance by Kevin Schlereth. He is a touring solo folk-rock musician from St. Louis. There has also been an awesome later addition to the show! That is the band Bear Grass, coming all the way from Albany, New York. You can check out some of their music below. Opening the show up will be Lyzza Barth, who will be performing some real spoken word.

The show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Don’t know where The Radon Lounge is? Our team of top archeologists and paleontologists are working hard continuing to uncover more secrets about Black Sheep’s mysterious past. Earlier this fall we brought you photos from our very first Black Sheep Fest in 2008 and photos from Black Sheep Fest 2010. November 7th at Black Sheep: Cantalouper, Caterpillar Club, Mystery Gift

It’s already time to start thinking of November shows here at Black Sheep and today we are bringing you news of a nice and sweet three-band show happening on Thursday, November 7th. Don’t you just love three band shows? This show will feature the shoegaze band Cantalouper from Columbia, Missouri. You can check out some of Cantalouper’s music embedded on the player below. This show will also feature Springfield shoegaze/sludge project Caterpillar Club, which features members of Soap Scum and Our Lady. They might have a release planned soon, so be on the lookout for some new songs. Opening things up we have a newer Springfield band called Mystery Gift, which features members of the bands Mildred and Meredosia.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and costs $5. There is no facebook event for this one yet, but you can still check out our shows page to see what other shows are coming up at Black Sheep.

Black Sheep Roundtable/Street Team Meeting Tomorrow

Hey what are you doing tomorrow? Well tomorrow’s going to be a great day and if you don’t have anything going on you should check out the Black Sheep roundtable and street team meeting happening at 1:00 pm! We will be meeting to discuss big plans for our new heating and air system inside our space, upcoming shows, and more. Anyone with any fresh ideas for The Black Sheep is welcome to come out and bring them to the table. Even if you don’t have anything to say, feel free to come out! After meeting we will split up and flier all around town for all of our upcoming shows. If you have fliers for a show you have coming up bring them to the meeting and we can do some flier-trading!

The meeting is at 1:00 pm and everyone is welcomed to join. If you can’t make it to the meeting and want to know more about what you can do to get involved check out our get involved page!

Today on Black Sheep Radio: Tom Irwin

It’s already Friday and we almost forgot that Friday means that it’s another episode of The Black Sheep Radio Show! We are excited to announce that our guest on the radio this week is long time musician and writer of the music section of The Illinois Times, Tom Irwin. Tom is bringing a lot to the show this week. He might fill us in a little bit on how the Illinois Times’s Best Ofs are going for 2013. He is also bringing his guitar and might perform some songs on air. He also is bringing in some of his older recorded music and some of his favorite Springfield songs from as far back as the 1980s. All that plus we will be playing more of your current favorite Springfield hits as well as plenty of music from bands coming through Black Sheep very soon.

That all happens on The Black Sheep Radio Show, airing Fridays (today) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. You can listen to our show on 88.3 WQNA fm or online at wqna.org. All of our old episodes are also up for download over on our radio page!

Last Minute Show October 10th at Black Sheep: Triple Stitch, Must Build Jacuzzi, Good Times, Joshua Powell

Uh oh! We have a last minute show coming up in just one week! We need your help to make sure the show goes over well! That means all you Black Sheep ladies, gents, and aliens need to come out to this show on Thursday, October 10th. This show will feature the punk band Triple Stitch from somewhere in Minnesota. We also have Peoria ska band Must Build Jacuzzi playing this show. Must Build Jacuzzi last played Black Sheep this past April. Also playing this show is local acoustic project Good Times! Opening things up we have another touring act and that is Joshua Powell from Indiana. You can check out one of Joshua Powell’s full-band videos embedded below.

Wir Können Is Releasing A Tape!

You heard it here folks! Local sad-boy emo group Wir Können is putting out a cassette tape. The dudes have been talking about recording for a while (ever since they formed) and now it seems that there’s some truth to it all. It looks like it’ll be 2 songs (one on each side) for 2 bucks. What a bang for your buck! They’ll be selling them at their next show at the Black Sheep which is November 5th! In honor of us uncovering a batch of photos from the very first Black Sheep Fest in 2008 a couple of weeks ago, we have decided to bring another old batch of photos back to life. Today we are bringing you a few photos from Black Sheep Fest 2010, which was the third Black Sheep Fest and held on one day on Saturday, July 31st 2010. October 19th at Black Sheep: Yogi Beara, Mystery Gift, Big Storm, Old Fox Road, Paqui

It’s the first day of October and we have a spooky October show announcement! This stacked show is happening on Saturday October 19th at Black Sheep and it is sure to be a great time with some great local bands. For this show we have the two-piece hard rock band Yogi Beara. We also have another great two-piece band, Mystery Gift who recently played a show at Black Sheep this past Sunday. Mixing things up and bringing the feel good rock n’ roll will be Big Storm. This show will also feature a newish pop-punk band from the Amish town of Arthur, Illinois called Old Fox Road. You can check out some of their music on the player embedded below. Opening things up is Paqui, who will be taking us on some sort of an acoustic adventure!
