Dumb Fest 2 Passes On Sale

As the weather outside is getting warmer we know that we are drawing closer and closer to the great big Dumb Fest happening in June. Dumb Fest 2 will be happening June 13th and 14th at Black Sheep, Skank Skates, and Dumb Records. We are very excited about this year’s lineup, which you can find right here. This year the lineup features 38 different bands from 8 different states.

Today we are putting Dumb Fest 2 passes on sale. You can purchase a pass online right here on our big cartel page, or at Dumb Records during store hours. Right now you can get a two-day pass to Dumb Fest 2 for $20. This gets you into both days of Dumb Fest. Yeah that’s $20 for almost 40 bands. We are also throwing in something special to all of you mutants who are pre-ordering this 2-day pass. The first 50 people who pre-order this year will be getting one hand numbered screen printed poster, drawn up by Brian Galecki and printed by Brandon Carnes (pictured above). We will have these in the basement of Dumb Records for anyone who buys a ticket and also at Dumb Fest for those of you who order online. Single-day passes will go on sale later in May, and we will be sure to let you know as soon as that happens.

This past Saturday was a big day for Southtown. Dumb Records had our first every Record Store Day, there was a total of three shows at Dumb and Black Sheep where 13 bands played, and we welcomed a new business (Empire Board Shop) to the Southtown neighborhood. We want thank everyone who came out or participated in Record Store Day and for making it a success. We look forward to an even bigger Record Store Day next year. We did manage to capture a few pictures of that day, which you can find a few of above and below. Tonight at Black Sheep: F///\\\M, Sons Of Hippies, Meredosia

Tonight at Black Sheep we have a short and sweet three-band show. Sounds like a perfect event for this beautiful spring day. Tonight we have the new Springfield solo project that everyone has been raving about, MUCK///\\\\FOUNTAIN. Prepare to be splashed by his fountains of muck. Other than that we have the touring band Sons Of Hippies coming from Florida. You can check out one of their hit music videos streaming below. The third band, who will probably going on first is Meredosia. Meredosia is a Springfield post-rock band that recently released some new music.

Bernays Propaganda (Macedonia) playing BXS Sunday

pizzaListen up, there’s a super cool band that has been added to the show at the Sheep on Sunday called Bernays Propaganda, coming all the way from Macedonia! Bernays Propaganda is composed of activists that believe in the destruction of illusion created through the media. Here is a quote from their page on bandcamp.

Today the messengers seem to act not only as a means of informing, but also as the creators of all seduction, manipulation and mind-control that make us more insensitive to problems that surround us, meanwhile packing their own pockets with cash only to bring fast-paced entertainment to our homes. These are the situations and moments that Bernays Propaganda, appropriately named after Edward L. Bernays, the inventor of PR and all subsequent mediapowered destruction, seek to evoke and rebel against. 

This band is named after Edward Bernays, who was an individual known as being the “father of propaganda” and being the instigator of mass public manipulation on the grounds that people are naturally irrational and dangerous and therefore need to be “occupied” or controlled. These people are fierce- it’s seriously rad that they’re coming to Black Sheep. Their tunes will lift you, wake you up and inspire you to MOVE! Get excited get excited get excited.

They won’t be the only ones playing at the show on Sunday, there will also be the super fly band Ghost Mice (featuring Christ Clavin from Plan-It-X Records). Our ever beloved Looming will be playing too, as well as the fine fellas in Nephrons. ALSO- there is a new band playing! They are called Wilt Candy. Their folk tunes are sure to be rad. June 28th at Black Sheep: The Complaint Line, Acker, My Dad, Animal Faces, Reaching Right

Look at this cool show happening on Thursday, June 5th! This one will feature three touring bands and two locals. For this show we have Springfield rock band The Complaint Line. That name might sound familiar because The Complaint Line will be playing the Black Sheep Cover Show on May 16th as The Pixies. Also on this show we have the experimental band Acker from Champaign. Then we have the band My Dad (pictured above). My Dad are no strangers to Black Sheep, they have played here two times before in the past couple of years. You may have noticed that sometimes they bring an extra drummer or two. My Dad will be on tour with Canadian band Animal Faces. You can check out some music from Animal Faces below. To round things off we have the Jacksonville pop-punk band Reaching Right playing this show.

May 9th at Black Sheep: Mouthsex, Q, Yatagarasu, Femoral, Aporia

Hey hey we have a show coming up real quick here on Friday, May 9th to tell you about today. This show is sure to be a real blast. It features the newer Springfield slimepunk band Mouthsex, who recently released their first demo. This show will also feature newer band from St. Louis called “Q“. You can check out their “demQ” streaming on the player below. Then there are a couple of touring bands on the bill. We have the weirdo Texas band Yatagarasu. They will be out on tour with other Texas punk band, Femoral. Opening things up is a very rare performance by the out of control Springfield harsh noise project Aporia.

“Punk: Inside The Local Scene”

Thanks to Black Sheep show go-er and volunteer here at blacksheepspringfield.com Austin Duffie, we now have a great mini-documentary on the Black Sheep and DIY punk culture. The project was for a high school class project focusing on types of groups and subcultures. What Austin ended up with was this beautiful video he created (which you can watch below). The video features footage of plenty of bands performing at Black Sheep (Say Something (pictured above), Koji, boon, Akaname), as well as a couple of interviews (Bo Mellado, Koji, Aubrey Puyear).

Some Things Can’t Be Ignored: 217 Comp

knbIn Springfield during the early 2000’s, there used to be a group of hardcore kids that formed a group to make a zine called “Know No Boundaries“. This zine featured band and album reviews, articles, interviews and news. In December of 2000, they put out a comp album of songs from bands both dead and alive to keep the musical culture in the scene circulating. Old Springfield bands like The Goofs, Ingot, Fagalonius P. Hector, Park, N.I.L.8 and the Timmys were featured. This comp album is titled 217 represent and thanks to our good friend behind the Springfield blog Some Things Can’t Be Ignored (bringing us oldskool tunes on the monthly), this whole album is completely accessible for us to listen to here in 2014. So if you love the 90’s as much as you say you do, definitely give it a listen.

LLCC Battle of the Bands This Friday

battle of the bandsThis year, Lincoln Land Community College is hosting a grand Battle of the Bands on Friday, April 25th. Some bands familiar to the Black Sheep stage include The Blind Social, Built in a Day, Dog of Panic, Full Chroma, Trepidus, and Negative 17. There will be three judges that get a vote each, there will be a people’s choice vote and there will also be a vote given to the band that raises the most money. How will they do that? At the event, there will be donation jars assigned to each band. The band that gets the most dough will win that vote, and all of the money raised will go to United Way of Central Illinois, which is a local organization that looks to make our community stronger by giving food, shelter, health care, disaster services and educational support to those that need it.

The winner of the LLCC battle of the bands will win a prize of $300, the second prize winner will receive $200 and the third prize winner will receive $100. There will be t-shirts being sold for only $5 as well as door prizes (like candy and karaoke machines). The doors open at 5:30 and the bands start at 6. This event is sponsored by the Logger Activities Board and Student United Way of LLCC. State Journal Register: “The Asylum Getting The Band Back Together”

Springfield paper The State Journal Register published an article recently highlighting the importance of old Springfield music venue and hangout spot The Asylum and talked about the upcoming Asylum reunion. From the article:

The Asylum remains a fond memory for many Springfield and area teens who hung out there. On Thursday nights, they watched “The Simpsons.” There were movie nights. There were shows by local bands like The Timmys and The Gunga-Dins and from traveling acts like the Portuguese Rodeo Clown comedy troupe. Between Steve’s substantial presence and the self-policing by the teenagers, things went smoothly for the most part.

You can find the full article on the SJ-R website right here. In the article talks to former Asylum owner Steve Brink, who now lives in North Carolina but is coming back to town for the reunion. The Asylum reunion will be happening on Saturday, May 24th at VFW 211 Old Jacksonville Road. The reunion crew is still trying to raise money for their event, and you can contribute on the Asylum reunion website.
