Hospital Job / The Capitalist Kids Split 7″

Look what it is just in time for the holidays! Local pop punk all star band Hospital Job have released some brand new material in the form of two songs on a split 7″ record with Capitalist Kids from Austin, Texas. The split is being released by Rad Girlfriend Records and you can find it streaming on the player below. Head over to the Rad Girlfriend bandcamp page to download the record for $5 or also order the physical copy.

Hospital Job do not have any local shows lined up right now as far as we know! They will be playing a pretty sweet show in February in St. Louis it looks like with The Lillingtons and more. Hospital Job also released their third full album Never Get Cold last year.

Tours: Pretend I’m Not There / Hungry Foxes

Looks like local ambient project “Pretend I’m Not There” put together by B.J. Pearce aka “Whistletooth Jack” is heading out on the road. This run is going to be with other Kansas City, Missouri based solo artist Hungry Foxes. Here are the dates for that:

December 17th at Black Sheep: Vonne, Lavender, Gadget, Old Fox Road, Spooky Poo

On Saturday, December 17th we have a real treat for you all. We already announced our annual Black Sheep Holiday Show as happening on Friday, December 23rd. Well this one’s another all-local lineup around Christmastime being called the “Ugly Sweater Christmas Show”. Check it out and bring a sweater! Five bands all from the area bringing you that holiday cheer. For this show we have Vonne– the chill pop band perfect for this time of year. We also have Lavender featuring Kyle Noonan- one of the ones busy heading up the new Southtown Sound project. Before that is the Central-Illinois based electric folk punk band Old Fox Road. Check out some of their music streaming below. We also have our close Decatur friends rolling through in the bands Spooky Poo and Gadget. Should be a good time!

New Band Pages: Starlorde

Time to get back on track updating our list of current band pages- because there sure as heck are plenty of new bands being started out there! This week we are bringing you a new band page for the band Starlorde– the intergalatic hardcore band that descended upon our music scene from space at some point this past summer. The band recently put out a four song demo on Ooey Gooey Tapes which you can find streaming on the page, and you can find out more about the band there as well. Check that page out right here. Starlorde do not have any shows lined up at the moment as far as we can tell.

December 10th at Dumb Records, HISO Music, & Black Sheep: “Midwest Industry Insiders Conference”

It looks like 217hiphop.com and The Kick-It-Coalition are hard at work setting up a big event next weekend incorporating some Southtown spaces – Dumb Records and Black Sheep – as well as the new HISO Music Recording Studio. We are excited to be working with all of those different groups on this event, being called the “Midwest Industry Insiders Conference” geared more towards those interested in an inside look at the entertainment industry from a hip hop and R&B standpoint. The conference is going to be an all day thing with different events taking place at the different locations. Let’s take a look at what’s planned:

2:00 – 4:00 pm inside Dumb Records:
A panel discussion with some of the Midwest’s foremost authorities on entertainment business with topics such as, the pros and cons of major label record deals, how to fund a national tour, and how to properly own and distribute your music.

4:00 – 6:00 pm inside HISO Studios:
A listening and writing session with Gold Selling songwriters and recording artists, Da Twin Towerz who are responsible for co-writing Drake and Rihanna‘s hit single “Too Good”, plus have written for or collaborated with such artists as R. Kelly, Katy Perry, and French Montana, The session will include live feedback on local artist music as well as a chance to write and produce a new music.

7:00 – 10:00 pm at Black Sheep:
An artist showcase where fans and artists will catch a live performance from Da Twin Towerz plus performances from Trap Republic Records artists. Those artists who sign-up will perform a 6 minute set in front of our special guest judges or a chance to walk away with promotinal packages and an up to $500 cash prize! (Showcase slots are limited)

Sammy & The Punk: “Alien Abduction”

Today we bring you some brand new Springfield music from the band “Sammy & The Punk.” Sammy & The Punk (the band) just released a killer full length album called Alien Abduction. It features ten tracks of hot rock and roll, which you can find streaming on the player below. Head over to the band’s bandcamp page to download the full album at your own price.

Sammy & The Punk do not have any shows lined up in Springfield right now as far as we can tell. You can check out a video of one of their last performances at Black Sheep right here.

Tonight at Black Sheep: Resilience – A Night of Poetry, Spoken Sentiment, and Music

Snow is in the air, the times are a changin’, and we are trying something a little new at Black Sheep tonight! Tonight we are hosting a special event in response to this years election results and other events going on in the world- it is being called Resilience: A Night of Poetry, Spoken Sentiment, and Music. This will be an event geared towards bringing together the voices of a variety of different communities that need to be heard in response to this year’s election results while incorporating various forms of expression, emotion and resilience. Here is what we have planned for the night:

9:30 and later: PRYSS and SHARK WEEK
8:30 – 9:30: block of hip hop and spoken word presented by 217Hiphop.comand Torch Tuesday at Bar None
+ performance by Mikey Hash
8:10: guest speaker Sam Johnson of KEEP It 200
8:00: spoken word by AJ Francis
7:00 – 8:00: an hour of poetry by Johari Id and more
6:30: guest speaker Stephen Houldsworth
6:00: opening + maybe songs by Jason Perry

We will also be taking donations for the following organizations:
Planned Parenthood
The Pheonix Center: Central Illinois LGBTQ Community Center
Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault
National Urban League
Standing Rock : Dakota Access Pipeline Donation Fund
The Task Force

As you can see, this show will start at 6:00 pm and likely go until around 10:30 pm. Check out a facebook event for this right here. Black Sheep Holiday Show December 23rd + Benefit for Southtown Sound

What’s this little Christmas surprise? Looks like Black Sheep is having a Holiday show this year afterall, and it’s going to be a great return of our friend Brandon Carnes and also a benefit for the new recording studio coming to Southtown – Southtown Sound. That’s right, for the Black Sheep holiday show this year we have Brandon performing as F///\\\M, whose music you can find streaming below. We also have the new hit Springfield indie/punk/pop band Attic Salt on the bill which we are excited about. Up before that is the incredible noise artist “Emasculate Regression.” Then opening things up we have the debut of a brand new Springfield band put together by Mario Cannamela- called “Roman Candle Drive By” or “Christmas Cannamela” or something like that.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and go quick so that some of us can get over to a NIL8 show happening at Bar None that night. Admission is $5 and a good portion of proceeds will be going towards with Southtown Sound kickstarter. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Eric Marvel: “Tom Fake”

Today we bring you a brand new hit track from Eric Marvel– the newer solo project of Eric Rogers of The Luzhin Defense. Eric recently performed as this new project inside Dumb Records for cassette store day. The new song is called “Tom Fake” and you can find it streaming below. Also head over to the Eric Marvel bandcamp page to download the song for $1 and to check out more of his music. There are no live Eric Marvel shows lined up as far as we know.

Tonight at Dumb Records: Doc Otis, Ragna Rye, Rabble Rouser Thing Band, Andy Krisak

It’s a rare show inside of our record store Dumb Records tonight as part of our busy weekend full os shows! Tonight we have a stellar folk / Americana show lined up for you ears. We have Doc Otis coming to play in the store tonight from St. Louis. You can check out their music streaming on the player below. We also have the two piece folk rock band from Springfield Ragna Rye performing- they were just recently featured on the last episode of The Studio Show. Then also from St. Louis rolling in we have the Rabble Rouser Thing Band. Opening things up we have solo acoustic performer Andy Krisak from the area.

For this show we are asking of donations of $5 to go to the touring acts. We also have a sale going on- 20% off everything in the store during the show!
