July 12th at Black Sheep: Battle of the Bands 2014

Battleofbands

Remember last summer when we had our first Black Sheep Battle of the Bands in a while and it was a blast? (There was one in the very early years of Black Sheep but times were very different back then). Today we are announcing our Black Sheep Battle of the Bands “2.5” or 2014! It will be happening this year on Saturday, July 12th. We need your help in hunting down bands for this! If you are young and play in a band that has not played Black Sheep a whole lot, we need you! If you are in a high school or middle school band, talk to us! If you are neither of those things, we still might be interested in having your band on the roster for the Battle of the Bands this year. Here are some of the criteria we are looking for in bands:

– bands that have high school, middle school, or even college-aged members.
– bands that have not yet played Black Sheep, or have only played once or twice.
– new bands that have formed within the last year

If you are in a band that falls into any of those criteria and are from Springfield or the surrounding areas, we would like to hear from you! Email us at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com and we will talk with you more about Battle of the Bands details.  Of course this year there will also be big prizes for two selected winners for the Battle of the Bands. One winner will receive a spot on Black Sheep Fest 2014, and another will receive a few songs recorded for free in South Town Studio.

Tonight at VFW 2211 Old Jacksonville Rd: Asylum Reunion

06Tonight there will be no shows at Black Sheep. We are holding off on a show this Saturday night in honor of one of Springfield’s older music venues, The Asylum. The Asylum will be having a reunion of sorts at the VFW hall on 2211 Old Jacksonville Road tonight. With this reunion will be a show featuring Springfield punk band The Timmys and there will be a reunion for old Springfield punk band The Gunga Dins. Feel free to come out and enjoy the show even if you never got the chance to make it out to The Asylum in the 1990s. We can all rock together. For more information on the reunion show go here.

Activities will begin at 3:00 pm and the show will kick off at 7:00 pm. Admission for this is $5, and any extra money raised will go to the St. Jude Children Hospital. You can find a facebook event for this right here. Check out more Springfield shows outside of Black Sheep on our Springfield shows page.

Today on Black Sheep Radio: Roger Smith (Asylum Reunion)

02Today on The Black Sheep Radio show we will be blasting back in time and talking to Roger Smith about the upcoming Asylum Reunion show. The Asylum was a Springfield venue and coffeehouse around for a few years during the late 1990s. Roger Smith is one of the organizers for the Asylum reunion show which is happening tomorrow at VFW Post #755. As a part of the reunion Springfield bands The Timmys and The Gunga Dins will be performing. For more information on that you can head over to a facebook event right here.

The Black Sheep Radio Show airs from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on 88.3 WQNA fm. You can stream the show online at wqna.org. Also check out our radio page where you can find an archive of downloadable episodes of the past.
