Dumb Fest 2 is already over, but we thought we would let you know that Springfield college radio group WUIS was kind enough to feature a segment on Dumb Fest 2 this past Friday, right before the festival happened. WUIS interviewed Dumb Fest coordinator Brian Galecki about what the fest is all about and what everyone could expect. You can check out that ten minute piece right here.

Dumb Fest 2 happened this past weekend and was a rousing success. Will there be a Dumb Fest 3?

Tonight at Black Sheep: PJ Famicom, F///\\\M, King Worm, Swamp Rat

Image

We’ve got a rager coming to you tonight for all you folks who are itching for more shows after Dumb Fest 2. PJ Famicom (of Super Famicom fame) is coming all the way up from Florida on tour to play his infinitely catchy music, which has been cataloged in over 36 releases over the last 12 years as a band! Some of the older punks may remember Super Famicom’s memorable shows back in the pre-Black Sheep days at Breadstretchers.

On the local end of things we have the death-defying solo act F///\\\M erupting over us with a wave of sound that sounds like a full band, complete with several guitars, a drum kit, and an ever-important fog machine. We also have a band that Jessica Knight called “the best band in Springfield” playing their third show ever: King Worm, fronted by local graphic design legend Mike Tirehaus. And opening things up is Swamp Rat, brandishing a brand new tape from local label Ooey Gooey Tapes and still full of adrenaline from their energetic set at Day 2 of Dumb Fest 2.

As always, the show starts at 7 pm and costs $5. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. You kids know the drill. I’ll be there. Your friends will be there (or people you can make friends with). You’ll be there. See you at the show!

Springfield Bike Co-Op

sbcA bike co-op is being initiated here in Springfield! Local resident Will Boder has been taken under the wing of The Bike Doctor in order to run a bike co-op that will be located on 8th and North Grand. According to the Springfield Bike Co-Op’s website (officially known as Enos Park Bike Cooperative),

The Enos Park Bike Cooperative is focused on teaching bicycle construction and maintenance through a unique volunteer program. We hope to support a thriving biking community within Springfield by providing our services at little to no cost. The program holds to cooperative values by creating shared ownership and responsibility for the project. By relying on volunteer power and contributions we hope to create a thriving environment of mutual support for all bikers in the Springfield area.

Basically, anyone who wants to put in hours on their bike or other bikes will in turn receive training and help from people who know what they are talking about, such as Will Boder. According to Will,

The Enos Park Springfield Bike Co-Op is focused on building a shared space where anyone in the community can work on building, repairing, or maintaing a bike. We want to build a stronger and larger biking community in Springfield by creating an environment of mutual support and education. Everyone is welcome to participate and contribute to building the Co-Op. We ask volunteers working with us to put in a solid four hours of work. Afterwards volunteers can use all of the equipment, parts, and tools in the shop. Feel visit us at www.springfieldbikecoop.com for the latest information. Please email us at springfieldbikecoop@gmail.com to sign up for our volunteer list to save a spot for yourself in the shop. Looking forward to working with you!

This bike co op is definitely a venture that is worthy of attention and help, especially for those of us who are looking to cut down on driving. Co-ops themselves are excellent ways to build local community support as well as to promote the D.I.Y ethic, so don’t be reluctant to get involved! To see what’s happening with Springfield’s one and only developing food co-op, like the facebook page and sign up for their newsletter right here! Keep it real.

State Journal Register: Bringing In The Punk!

Screen shot 2014-06-12 at 8.13.30 AM

Springfield newspaper The State Journal Register were kind enough to have an article featured in today’s A&E section about Dumb Fest, which is coming up tomorrow. You can find the article “BRING IN THE PUNK” in page 11A of the newspaper today. Also check out some of the article below:

Music is used for expression. This weekend, the Black Sheep Cafe, Dumb Records, and Skank Skates are collaborating in a music festival that expresses freedom and culture.

After last year’s success first music festival, Dumb Fest is being celebrated again – but this time it is bigger. Brian Galecki, owner of Dumb Records in Springfield, says that this year’s festival on Friday and Saturday will offer 40 bands – up 25 from last year – with “different styles and genres of music.”

The stages will be at the three businesses at the intersection of South 11th Street and South Grand Avenue. The highlight of the fest is the live music.

Bands from different states are coming together to showcase their love for the punk/rock music scene. “There are different types of music this year, even though it is mainly geared to punk rock. There is something for everyone to listen to and enjoy,” Galecki said.

This year, Dumb Fest has invited eight local bands to be part of the lineup. “We always try to look for active bands, the ones that tour and try to give out their music,” said Galecki.

Springfield’s Austin Connelly of the band Swamp Rat says to expect high-energy movement throughout the show. Galecki, who also is a member of the band Soap Scum, said that he is excited to play some music and he’s also excited to organize this festival. “Last year, it started raining on us and we were the first to play,” he said.

You can find the rest of the article in today’s copy of The State Journal Register, or also possibly online at sj-r.com. Dumb Fest 2 of course is happening tomorrow and Saturday. Today is your last day to pre-order tickets online, which can be done so here. After today the cost will be $12 at the door for day 1 and $15 at the door for day 2.

King Worm Added To Dumb Fest Day 1, Exclusive Track Premier

kingowmrart copy

Dumb Fest 2 is happening tomorrow, and today we have another slight change to the lineup to announce. On day 1 of Dumb Fest (Friday), Yusuke from Central Illinois will no longer be playing. New Springfield hardcore band King Worm will be taking their place (on the Black Sheep stage at 3:30 pm).

In coordination with this switch-up and announcement we are bringing you the first ever King Worm recording, which comes from the bands upcoming five-song demo. You can check out the track “Turbine Engine Grinding” streaming below. Make sure you make it out early to Dumb Fest tomorrow (things kick off at 3:00) and be sure not to miss King Worm’s set. For the full lineup and set times of all 40 bands playing Dumb Fest 2, you can go here to our Dumb Fest 2 page.
