In honor of NIL8 recently doing a full acoustic set at Donnie’s Homespun earlier this spring, Springfield music blog Some Things Can’t Be Ignored has featured an older recording of NIL8 performing their song “Sheep.” The recording is from an unknown date at some point live on Springfield radio station 92.7 WQLZ. You can check out that song streaming below, or head over to the Some Things Can’t Be Ignored bandcamp page to download the song for free. From The Some Things Can’t Be Ignored blog:

I decided to dig up this old gem I’ve had for a while to share with you all just to give you a little taste of what Thursday night might sound like.  This is Jeff & Gary Brammer (Piss Pot Pete) performing “Sheep” live with just an acoustic guitar on WQLZ’s Bandemonium show.  I’m not sure when this was done, but certainly a rare performance!!

Sgt Karate: “The Frost Giant’s Lament”

a0296313150_10Springfield one-man black metal project Sgt Karate has released their first ever recording in the form of a 13-minute long song: “The Frost Giant’s Lament.” Sgt Karate (has also called “Sargent Karate, Everyone Is So Pretty,” or S.K.E.I.S.P.), came about during the first ever Black Sheep Band Lotto last summer. It is the solo project of Chris Yeager of old Springfield punk band The Gunga Dins. You can head over to Sgt Katate’s bandcamp page to listen to the song or download it for free.

Sgt Karate will be playing their next show on Wednesday, July 1st along with Appalachian Terror Unit, Occultonomy, and SAP. Find more info on that show right here.

With summer tours approaching, more and more bands playing Dumb Fest 3-D are coming out with more new releases. Last week we highlighted new music from bands Run Forever, Bugg, and Benny The Jet Rodriguez. Tonight we have another round of bands playing Dumb Fest who have recently released new songs or albums. The first of those is Dowsing (pictured above) who have a new single “Blades, Blades, Blades, And Even More Blades” coming out on a four way split to be released on Count Your Lucky Stars Records. Check out their new song streaming right here.

Dumb Fest 3-D day two band Tenement from Appleton Wisconsin recently just released a new double-LP called Predatory Headlights on Don Giovani Records. The album was completed over a course of three years and just released at the beginning of this month. Tenement will be touring the US and Canada with Big Zit directly after Dumb Fest. Check out a few singles from that album right here and right here.

Champaign/Urbana-based day two dumb fest bands Nectar and Single Player will be releasing a split 7″ that will be available for the first time at Dumb Fest 3-D. The 7″s is being released through Rat King Records, and one of the songs from the Nectar side of the split can be found right here.

Columbus-based punk band Slugbugs who will be playing day 2 of Dumb Fest also put up a new cassette release online earlier this week. The cassette is called Electronic Backtalk and you can find that streaming below.

Springfield Business Journal: “Hello, Young Springfield!”

business

It looks like Dumb Records and the rest of Southtown has yet again made it to the monthly publication The Springfield Business Journal. This time our block is mentioned in an article looking at the topic of ways to attract younger people to visit Springfield. The article points to Southtown as an exception to a lack of activities and businesses drawing youth and keeping them from leaving the city. From the article:

“One exception is the fiercely independent community of small business owners, musicians and skateboarders who have gathered around the once-blighted corner of South Grand Ave. and 11th Street – the neighborhood known as Southtown – which over the past few years has evolved into the home of a record store (Dumb Records) a working recording studio (Southtown Studio) and a skate shop (Boof City), alongside a longer-standing skateboard ramp (Skank Skates) and all-ages concert venue (The Black Sheep Cafe).

This staunchly alternative-minded group of young people is a bright spot in a traditionally bleak local youth culture. These are young, talented, vital people who are choosing to live in Springfield long past the town’s usual sell-by date as a home base. “If I hadn’t started the studio, I wouldn’t still be in Springfield,” said musician and Southtown Studio owner-operator Brandon Carnes (whose band, Looming, recently signed a contract with prestigious California punk rock record label No Sleep), and this attitude is echoed throughout the Southtown community. There is even a current crowdfunding campaign online at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/projectsouthtown/project-southtown to raise money, in part to help make improvements to the run-down neighborhood.

A passionate, constructive, cultural community like the one that has developed in Southtown can only be a good sign for the city as a whole – especially as it is managing to make Springfield an attractive home for young adults who could easily set up elsewhere. However, it is only a start. This kind of “scene” is almost by definition insular, with self-selecting participants pursuing often highly specialized goals in rarefied, often purposefully ramshackle, environments.”

The rest of the article (written by Scott Faingold) can be found at Barnes & Noble and a few other locations in town. Dumb Records was on the cover of The Springfield Business Journal when it opened up early last year.
