Lincoln’s Legends Podcast, which focuses on people doing things and creative minds here in Springfield, just released an hour-long interview with the mayor of Springfield, Jim Langfelder. Jeremie Bailey of the podcast talks to the mayor about Lake Springfield, local music, downtown development, and even mentions everything going on in Southtown. Dumb Records, Black Sheep, and Skank Skates came up in the topic of development going on around the city. Check out the full podcast right here, we also did our best to type up some of the the Southtown portion of the interview below:

Jeremie: Speaking of stimulating growth, have you had a chance to check out the Southtown community?

Mayor: Along South Grand?

Jeremie: Mhm, the Southtown entity for the Black Sheep, Dumb Records, the recording studio…

Mayor: I haven’t been inside there, no. I went to the festival that Bourbon Street had, the one on Brown Street there a couple of weeks ago. I went there one of the days, but I haven’t gone into the skate… the skate what is it?

Jeremie: Skank Skates

Mayor: Skank Skates, right.

Jeremie: They just celebrated their ten-year anniversary. It’s very near and dear to my heart. I used to play music, I’ve always been inspired by it. We have some of the most talented people in that area. And if you do have time, it sounds cliché, but there is something happening every single day there.

Mayor: I’ll have to go online and look you up on the youtube!

Jeremie: They’re all on the channel! But we actually have the second oldest skate park ever.

Mayor: Oh, really? Oldest in the country?

Jeremie: Yes, the country. They actually just finished their Kickstarter, they got more than they were asking for, they are documenting from VHS to digital of every pro-skateboarder or BMX rider that’s been through there since the 80’s. So there’s Skank Skates, there’s the music venue which bands from all around the world come and play. It’s all ages, it’s straight-edge as much as you can get, no drugs or alcohol along the premises. There is a record store you can sell LPs. Yes, records! 45’s, that’s what I’m saying not mp3’s!

Mayor: Like Recycled Records?

Jeremie: Yeah! But the amazing thing is, they are all young, they are all in their 20’s. And the amazing thing is the one that was in charge for the longest, who is 33, he had been there the 10 years. It just blows my mind the fact that in our city, in the same four block radius you can come in as a band- you can write, record, sell, and play your own music, along with the skate shop right next to it. There’s not a lot of people that say they have that in their city but it’s all sprawled out.

Mayor: See these are the types of stories we want to tell on the cable access channel with the city! Before it was always utilized to promote city government. What we want to do is promote Springfield through that means. Well, I’ll have to come check it out!

We also have the extremely heavy metal/hardcore band Lowered A.D. coming up from Carbondale for this show. Opening things ups is the newer Springfield hardcore band GUSH.

Circus Tonight At Black Sheep: CANCELLED!!

circusbaby

We know we all have been very excited for the circus to be coming to Black Sheep tonight. Unfortunately we have to break some of the saddest news we have ever had to break in a while on our site, and that is that the circus is no longer happening and tonight’s show is cancelled :'(. The Tinderbox Circus Sideshow had some van troubles and regrettably had to drop their last run of performances on this tour. We will try to get them back at some point.

This means the next show at Black Sheep is not happening until Friday, October 9th. There is a show at Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s you might want to check out this Saturday, October 3rd. Also check out our shows page to see what other shows are coming up at Black Sheep this fall.

Bands that played (in order) include Unicon Communications, Soap Scum, Our Lady, a surprise “10 Year Super Ska Band,” and Looming. You can check out the video, taken by Gordon Chang below.

Black Sheep History Page Updated

Along with Black Sheep turning ten years last weekend and many stories being shared on the event page for our anniversary show, we have some updates to our lengthy Black Sheep history page. First off, after many years of assuming it being lost forever, we finally found a photo of a flier for the first ever show at Black Sheep (pictured above). Thank you to Dr. Metz for helping us uncover this long lost flier!

If you head over to the Black Sheep history page you will find a number of added important dates, including a good amount from our building before it was Black Sheep, going as far back as the 1800’s. Be on the lookout of videos from our 10-year anniversary show coming very soon!

Tonight at Black Sheep: Jessica Knight, Patrick Russell, Nick Murphy, Kristin Walker, Clare Frachey, Quincy Curran

Tonight at Black Sheep we are going to ease into the fall with this nice and relaxing all-acoustic show. We have quite the lineup of local acoustic artists tonight. We have Jessica Knight of the band Looming doing a solo set. Before that is Patrick Russell, who does not play in any bands currently, but is one of the ones behind The Legacy Theater in town, and also used to play in Springfield band “I,Riejah” which played at Skank Skates in the 1990’s. Before Patrick is Nick Murphy of bands Fel Fae and Garter. Before Nick is a solo set by Kristin Walker formerly of Bad Banshee. Then is a set by Clare Frachey of SAP. And kicking things off is a set by Quincy Curran of the band Mystery Gift.

This show will start at 7:00 pm and admission will be $5. You can find a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep this fall and after the end of the world.

We could not have asked for a better celebration of the Black Sheep 10-year anniversary last weekend on the 18th! Thank you to all who came out and to all of the bands that played. The lineup for the show was Looming, Our Lady, Soap Scum, Unicon Communications, and a surprise band that we’ll call the “10-Year Super Ska Band” ended up playing, doing covers of many different ska bands from Black Sheep’s 10 year history.

Today we have photos from that show. We would like to thank photographers Heiu Luu, AJ Francis, and Miles Fowler. You can check out a handful of those photos above and below, or head over to our Black Sheep 10-Year Anniversary Album on flickr for hundreds more. Also check out our vids/pics page for groups of photos from other big events of the past.

Before that is Chemical Twin, which is described as an indie/pop punk band. Then we have The Black Sheep debut of a new punk band called Capital Chaos. And opening things up we have the acoustic two-piece act “8th Street Ahead.”
