Tonight at Black Sheep: Dumb Vision, Lincoln’s Tomb, Stereo Static, Weeping Iniquity, Can-Ka No Rey

dumbvisionbig

Tonight is the Super Bowl, so naturally we are holding a five band show at Black Sheep and going head to head competing with The Radon Lounge, who also have a show going on at their spot tonight. The show at Black Sheep tonight features touring act from Madison, Wisconsin called “Dumb Vision.” Check out some of their tunes streaming on the player below. What do you know, we also have the presidential themed rock band “Lincoln’s Tunes” aka Lincoln’s Tomb on board for this one. We also have the grunge-y alternative rock group Stereo Static taking the big stage. Before that there are a couple of noise projects – we have the local noise/industrial project Weeping Iniquity and also a newer noise project from Champaign-Urbana called Can-Ka’ No Rey.

That is five acts all starting at 7:00 pm and for just $6. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this year.

Illinois Times: “Young Poets Society”

tumblr_okt64c1weB1sj9f9fo1_1280.jpg

Some of you may have noticed on that the cover of The Illinois Times this week features an article about some of those who are active in Springfield’s DIY poetry scene – Johari Osayi Idusuyi, Ian Winterbauer and Emma R. Wilson – all of whom have performed and have helped set up events at Black Sheep in the past. Did you also know that we have started carrying free copies of The Illinois Times at Dumb Records (pictured above)? Stop by the shop and pick up an issue today! Check out the article on “Young Poets Society” online right here. From the article:

Idusuyi, Wilson and Winterbauer have developed a camaraderie based in their shared passion for poetry – they often attend events together and also critique each other’s writing in workshops. Stylistically, however, the three are quite distinct from each other, with Idusuyi’s writing focused largely on social and political concerns while Wilson tends to dissect the intimate corners of her own psyche. Winterbauer’s work, meanwhile, provides laconic and often acerbic observations of life as he experiences it in the Midwest.

No poetry events are currently lined up at Black Sheep, but stay tuned for more info on an open mic happening at Dumb Records soon!

Today we bring you a second music video released in recent times by “Forest Saints” (3rd video overall) -the solo recording project of Mark Schwartz based right here in Springfield. The video (which you can find below) is for the song “Sun/Hand” which comes off of Mark’s fourth album under Forest Saints, Bitter Pill. The other music video was for the song “Stock in Misery” off of the same album, and you can find that right here.

Mark also performs in the freeform jazz band End Times Trio along with Frank Trompeter and Richard Gilman-Opalsky who just gave a talk at Black Sheep this past weekend. There are not plans for any Forest Saints live shows, but we have been told that there is a fifth album for the project in the works! Check out all of Forest Saint’s recorded music on their bandcamp page right here. Also check out our vids/pics page for a bigger collection of Springfield music videos shot over the years.
