Yesterday we told you what we have lined up at Black Sheep this Saturday – a 217 Showcase featuring hip hop and R&B from the area. Looks like you all have options for great shows going on in town that night! Our friends over at The Radon Lounge are putting on a big event, which will also be the first show of the season for them since last spring. (The Springfield house venue usually takes a break during the summer). This time the basement venue is bringing in big Chicago Topshelf Records band Ratboys. Stream the newest music by Ratboys on the player below. This show also features quite the lineup of other groups. This includes Knotts from Cincinnati, Ohio. Also a newer local singer/songwriter called “Flunkie“. Opening things up is a new local hip hop project with a live backing band called Yung Magic. Also The Radon Lounge has been throwing featured artists and local businesses into the mix with their shows – this one features art and books by “Two Long Ears“.

All of that starts over at The Radon Lounge at 7:00 pm this Saturday. Admission is $10. Check out a facebook event for that one right here. Also be sure to check out our Springfield shows page for a list of shows going on outside of Black Sheep that we will hopefully update later today.

State Journal-Register “Dumb Records Uses Mayor Langfelder’s Likeness In Web Ad”

Screen Shot 2018-09-25 at 1.51.49 PM.png

Looks like once again Dumb Records has made the news. This time it’s for something a little on the wacky side. In yesterday’s paper (Monday) the paper published an article: “Dumb Records Uses Mayor Langfelder’s Likeness In Web Ad”. The article is a reference to this online video advertisement ran by our store on facebook, created by Evan Mitchell that premiered during his showing of Star Wars fan fictional film “The Lost Sandwhich” which premiered in our store at the start of this month. A newspaper reporter interviewed store owner Brian Galecki, video creator Evan Mitchell, and also the mayor himself. From the article:

“If they feel like I can sell some records, you know how I love music,” Langfelder said. However, that doesn’t mean Langfelder wants to see a barrage of ads using his image to sell products. “I don’t want a bunch of people out there doing that,” Langfelder said. Langfelder has a collection of albums on vinyl. His favorite song is “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin.

Check out the full article online right here. Will there be any sort of follow up with us reaching out to the mayor to team up somehow in the future? We will see. Stay tuned to find out what happens next.

What else do we have going on at Black Sheep this weekend? Glad you asked! Well, Sunday September 23rd (in two days) we have this metal show going on. Hip hop tonight, nothing Saturday, and metal on Sunday. That’s right. For Sunday we have touring act “Lo And Behold” coming from Springfield, Missouri. As crazy as this is if you can believe it, the band actually played at Bourbon Street Bar across the street earlier this summer and they are coming back to Southtown to play Black Sheep and get the whole experience. Stream their music on the player below. This time around the band is coming through with “Starving The South” – a hardcore rock n’ roll group also from Southern/Central Missouri. Joining us on the bill is St. Louis metal band Polterguts. Opening things up and the only Springfield band on the bill is Eyes From Above.

This show starts at 6:00 pm and admission is $7. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep this fall.

Black Sheep, Dumb Fest Finalists in The Illinois Times’s “Best of Springfield 2018”

WEB-IMAGE.24788.jpg

It’s that time of year again (you know what’s up), once again The Illinois Times are in the middle of gathering votes for their annual “Best Of” series where you get to vote for your favorite local businesses, bands, musicians, and public figures here in Springfield. This year just like every year now for a good number of years, The Black Sheep has made it on a list of finalists for best “small music venue.” Dumb Fest has made it on a list of finalists for “best music festival”. Dumb Records does not fit into any category, sorry. There are also a few band categories this year, although a notable one “best punk band” is not even a category this year, neither is “best all ages band” which have both featured bands frequently playing Black Sheep in the past. We won’t tell you who to vote for for any of these categories, but you can find the link to vote below!

VOTE HERE.

The Illinois Times will be posting their results for their polls in their October 25th issue later on next month. Our own “Best of Springfield Music” poll is ran on this site in December, so look forward to that as a poll that highlights more local bands, shows, and releases for 2018.
