Hey, here’s an all-local show coming up at our space on Sunday, September 29th! This one is going to be neat! A couple of the acts are hot off the open mic nights and straight onto this real deal show. Okay, so at the top of the bill is Starstuff – a fairly new local rock act that had played Black Sheep at one point towards the end of things. We don’t think they have anything online. There is also “Layers” – the poetry music fused duo and sometimes solo act. Come and eat it up with your ears. Reggie & The Demons is playing… who most of us know as “Niko”, this is the name of his new solo project that performed at our last open mic. Then opening things we have the bass / poetry fusion act Vetrell Yates, also playing his first real deal show at our space.

All of this starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. It’s one month from tomorrow! Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at the near future.

Here’s a show coming up here really quick!! Like in two weeks even! On Friday, September 13th. “The The Bread Theatre” (Very fancy). We’ve got a nice mix of solo artists on this show! At the top of the bill is Asa Dawson. Who’s that? He used to be in popular indie rock band from Springfield in the 2000’s called The Junior Varsity! Another blast from the past on this show from those of you who may have been around for some early Black Sheep days is The Winning Stretch, which is nowadays the duo of married couple Josh and Laura Kuhl (pronounced like “cool”). Before that is a solo set by Mario Cannamela. Opening things up looks like is Blue Parks!

What a nice, relaxing, indie rock / acoustic show. Starting at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page which we just updated!

Shonen Knife (Japan) at Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s September 30th

Screen Shot 2019-08-22 at 6.34.50 PM.pngA lot of you may have been dying to know what our secret international band we were trying to book at Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s when we announced that we were looking for sponsors to make this happen earlier this summer. Well tonight we are letting the beans out of the bag! The show is happening Monday, September 30th and our big secret band is Shonen Knife from Japan!

Shonen Knife is an alternative rock band formed in Osaka, in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock bands, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs with simple, yet uncoventional lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

From November 24 to December 11, Shonen Knife toured with Nirvana and Eugenious all over the UK for a total of nine shows and during the tour Naoko taught Cobain how to play “Twist Barbie”, which Nirvana covered live at one of their secret shows.

Of course we have to send out a big thank you to all of our sponsors that answered our call to help in donations to make this free to the public show a reality. Those sponsors are listed out here, support these businesses!

nightshop (in Bloomington, Illinois)
Grab-a-Java, Inc.
Activator Magazine
Hardee’s
Buzz Bomb Brewing Company
Copper Pot Cooking Studio
Dumb Records
The Real 217 Prublems
ColorDerm Permanent MakeUP
Edmiston Consulting
Benny DeWitt Tattoos
The Radon Lounge
Rail Splitter CrossFit
Redbird Electric Tattooing

Shonen Knife will be touring this time around with an opener “The Hooten Hallers” which from our understanding have actually played Springfield at Bar None before, and they are from Missouri.

The start time for this event is going to be right at 6:00 pm (don’t be late)! It is free, but we will gratefully accept donations at the show and even before to make sure we have enough to cover costs of pulling this off (we did fall short of our goal with our sponsors, but are still to the point where it is happening no matter what). Find a facebook event for this one right here.

September 14th at Dumb Records: Junior Pasáre, Keyng, Alexa Redd, CompostitionC, Animals With Human Names, Nardo Drip

hiphopshow9.14web2.0

Here we have another show to tell you about – the third ever hip hop show happening at our space on Saturday, September 14th and the lineup is looking stacked!! We’ve got another six performers lined up, most of them have never performed at our space before. At the top of the bill is Junior Pasáre, who recently dropped an album called We Gone Win. Moving on down the flier… we got Alexa Redd, who is a pop artist from Lincoln, Illinois who is also doing big things. She performed in front of our space earlier this spring for the “Fat Ass 5k” parade downtown and that was a fun time even though it rained. Moving down the list, we have a very rare performance by CompositionC, who recently put out a full length album which we happen to have in stock on CD in our store! This will be his first performance since putting out the album. Animals With Human Names is on the bill as well, playing for the second time in our space. Then is a younger artist we just heard about going by “Keyng“, based out of Lanphier High School right here in Springfield! Opening things up at this one is Nardo Drip – an artist originally from Chicago who from what we understand has some hot dance moves as well.

For all of this we are saying doors at 7:00 pm and show time is right at 7:30 pm! Admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page where we have everything coming up at our space listed out.

It’s on Friday, September 20th and features touring rock trio from Madison, Wisconsin The Hussy featuring a member of rock n’ roll group “Nobunny.” You can check them out on the player embedded below. They have a new album coming out called Looming, lol. In addition to The Hussy we’ve got a gabble of local bands playing this one as well, including a performance from rock group Epsom. September 7th at Dumb Records: Blushe, Prowess, + “Which Band Is Your Boyfriend In?” Documentary Showing

1-1.jpg

Today we are happy to announce the first movie / documentary screening we are attempting to have in our new space! And we’ve got it paired up with two bands performing, for an all around well rounded event! Our friends at Activator Magazine approached us about the possibility of us doing a showing of a new documentary from the UK exploring gender in the DIY scene called “What Band Is Your Boyfriend In?“. Here is a description from the facebook page:

This documentary features the views of a range of women/gender-fluid individuals from all walks of life within the UK music scene. It looks at how and why people get involved in music, the positive and the not-so-positive experiences, and the possible ways we can change things.

The gender divide exists – there’s no doubt about it. And recently there have been an increasing number of press articles on the issue, but they only scratch the surface. So, Which Band is Your Boyfriend in? provides an in-depth account of the situation.

From the outset it was my intention to create a film which could have an impact on the awareness of equality issues in the UK music scene. I hope that this project will inspire young people to pick up an instrument, learn to record music or just get out there to see live bands perform.

Check out the trailer for the documentary on the player below. Total run time is close to an hour and a half. We also have two bands on the bill – if we had to guess how we will have it set up, we will likely have the bands go first and then the movie screening directly after. Bands performing include the incredibly talented alternative / punk group Blushe, and then the male-fronted hardcore band Prowess.

This one starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else we’ve got coming up.
