Tonight at Black Sheep: Abyss (EP Release), Sammy & The Punk, Fill In The Blank, Vacant Skies (Final Show)

Abyss

Hey! Did you know we will be having a show at Black Sheep tonight and it’s the only show happening this weekend? Tonight is going to be a big all-local lineup and the big EP release show for Abyss. Abyss will be coming out with their new EP called Dreadnought (pictured above). Opening up for them is a few acts, one of them being the driving punk rock band Sammy & The Punk. Before that is the pop punk project Fill In The Blank who we have not seen in a minute. And opening things up is a band we have not seen an even longer time- Vacant Skies who are also apparently playing their last show as a band tonight.

Tonight the show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else we have coming up at Black Sheep in the near future.

Tonight’s the night for a big show happening at Black Sheep that we’ve been waiting quite some time for! Tonight we have Looming making a return to Springfield since last August- in town before they head to Texas for SXSW, after they made a stop in Chicago yesterday to record an Audiotree session. The band has also been hard at work on a new album. You can listen to the last recorded song they released on the player embedded below. The rest of this show is going to feature some wild & crazy punk acts. We have two other touring groups on the bill and those include “Erik Nervous” and “Spodee Boy” both from Michigan. Opening things up for this show on the big stage is the big time rock band Livin’ Thing.

Tonight the show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $10 (since we have 3 touring bands to take care of). Surely this will be a gig not to miss. Check out a facebook event for this one right here, and also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at everything else coming up at Black Sheep later this year.

The next show happening at Springfield house venue The Radon Lounge is actually this Sunday, March 5th in less than one week. The creative basement space is mixing things up once again and will this time be featuring the paintings of a local artist – Amanda Greive up on their walls on display, and also some Baklava goodness from local restaruant Yanni’s Gyros. In addition to all of that of course there will be some music bands performing. This includes “Eward + Jane“- a touring duo from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Also playing this one is Alex & The XOs from Bloomington, Illinois. We actually have some of their music streaming on the player below. The third act on the bill here is “Kneller” – a new indie rock band in Springfield that we know nothing about!

Check out a facebook event for this show right here. Things are kicking off Sunday at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. If you don’t know where The Radon is, you better look into their website and ask them! The Springfield Business Journal: “Hope For a Bright Future”

CalvinPitts01.jpg

Looking at the cover, most of you wouldn’t think that the cover of the Springfield Business Journal for the month of March 2017 has anything to do with what we are doing at Black Sheep or Dumb Records. The headline is “Hope For A Bright Future” and has a photo of Clavin Pitts who is director of a new Southtown-based business called South Town Training Center. Calvin has been hard at work renovating two buildings located at 1124 and 1122 South Grand Ave East, right across the street from Dumb Records and right next door to Walch’s Stained Glass Studio for close to a year now. From the article:

Inside a nondescript brick building in Springfield’s South Town business district, a wall covered with clear acrylic instead of drywall illustrates various tools and electrical wiring standards. Between the wooden studs, next to lineman pliers and a conduit bender, are inspirational messages about leadership and discipline.

Calvin Pitts built the wall as a teaching aid inside his South Town Training Center, which he’s opening this year as a space dedicated to offering construction training for people who might not have any other opportunity for a career. It’s an expansion of work Pitts started four years ago, providing job training and a healthy dose of hope. Soon, his students will learn skills such as solar panel installation and radon testing and mitigation through partnerships with other Springfield organizations.

Check out the full Springfield Business Journal online right here. The South Town Training Center’s program is set to be in full effect this spring as they are putting finishing touches on getting the buildings ready. It is certainly great to see new businesses popping up in our neighborhood!
