Today at Old State Capitol Steps + Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s: Dumb Fest 6 Day 3

DumbFest_6POSTER_WEB

Here we are at the final day of Dumb Fest 6. Today we are mixing things up and not having any shows at our usual spots of Black Sheep or Skank Skates. Instead we have two shows happening – one on the steps of the Old Illinois State Capitol downtown.

The Illinois Old State Capitol starts right at 12:30 pm with the band Bottom Bracket. Bands will be set up on to the North of the building. The show is also free! Other bands playing include Pleather, MOM, Nectar, and Ghoul Jr.

The second show is at the one and only Rock N’ Roll Hardee’s in the whole world, and is the third time we’ve gotten a chance to set up a show at their bandstand outside. Of course legendary Springfield band NIL8 will be closing out the evening there, and that show will start at 4:30 pm and likely go until 8:00 pm. Admission for that is also free. Other than NIL8 the lineup includes Special Interest from New Orleans, Spodee Boy from Nashville, Tennessee, and Pineapple RNR fron St. Louis.

State Journal-Register: “Dumb Fest 6 Kicks Off Friday”

tumblr_p9ysb9u7pw1sj9f9fo1_1280.jpg

Thank you to all of our beautiful media coverage in this city about Dumb Fest and everything we do. Today featured on the front of the A&E section of The State Journal-Register, local paper, is the headlines “Dumb Fest 6 Kicks Off Friday” and a photo of the band Earth Witch playing at the very first Dumb Fest which occurred at Black Sheep five years ago now. Stephen Spearie wrote the article and interviewed the band Telephone Junkies and festival organizer Brian Galecki. A snippet from the article:

That was the case with the Buffalo, New York-based band Radiation Risks, which plays a gritty, hard-driving brand of rock-infused hardcore punk. It played a Black Sheep show in March, but when Galecki showed them around Southtown, including neighboring Skank Skates, another venue for the festival, they confirmed for Dumb Fest nearly on the spot, he said.

Galecki said he pursued Matrix after a three-and-a-half minute demo tape showed up on the internet.

Find the article inside today’s issue of The State Journal Register or check out the full article online right here. Dumb Fest 6 kicks off tomorrow at 5:00 pm inside Black Sheep and goes on all weekend. Find a facebook event for Dumb Fest 6 right here.

(Important) Black Sheep Roundtable Meeting + Dumb Fest Cleanup Wednesday

elephant

Here we are the week before Dumb Fest 6. We have to admit that we have been going through a lot of heavy things at Black Sheep headquarters these past few weeks completely separate from getting ready for a fifty band festival. We feel it is pretty important to hold a Black Sheep Roundtable Meeting to discuss our future, or the future of any form of DIY all ages show space in Springfield.

We also do need to start cleaning up the grounds for Dumb Fest (picking up trash around the block, clearing weeds, etc). Also vacuuming and tidying up the inside of Black Sheep, etc. We are looking for someone with access to an industrial-sized fan for Dumb Fest Saturday!!!

An open Dumb Fest clean-up will be happening at Black Sheep and surrounding areas on Wednesday, the 6th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Then at 8:00 pm we will be holding a Black Sheep roundtable meeting to discuss our future (maybe other Dumb Fest preparation that needs to be discussed). Thank you to all who have been supporting us over the years and continue to do so!

Tomorrow Afternoon at Black Sheep: Consent Zine Workshop (Presented by PCASA)

32782608_1811118285593091_3593981942703325184_n.jpg

Tonight is the last show at Black Sheep before the great big Dumb Fest, but we do have one other workshop going on tomorrow in the early afternoon, being put on by the fine folks at the Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault who we are happy to be working with. It is going to be a free zine-making workshop of sorts highlighting topics of consent. Here’s the description from the facebook event:

For those of you who have expressed interest in helping with a consent zine, please come to this workshop and help us assemble one! We hope to have them up and ready for distribution by mid-June.
Consent is voluntary, verbal, on-going, retractable, mutual, genuine, enthusiastic, honest, active and SIMPLE!
Our goals with this workshop will be :
*to educate the participants on the basics of consent
*to educate the participants on the uses of zines and how to make them
*to then compile an informative and all inclusive consent zine together!
The zines will be for public use and distribution once they are finished.

PLEASE feel free to bring personal drawings, photographs you have taken, poems, collage materials, stickers, magazines, and anything that could be used to help with the assembly of these zines!

This event will be free of charge and open to everyone! Please note that the topics of discussion may be triggering or upsetting to some people so please plan accordingly. Please feel free to comment in this event discussion with any questions.
We hope to see you there!

Find a facebook event for the workshop right here. Also check out a list of what we have coming up at Black Sheep right here on our shows page.

31499104_1734801593229936_8042032516061724672_o

Tonight we have a very special show going on at Black Sheep, also our last before the great big Dumb Fest (aside from a workshop tomorrow). Tonight is the CD release for not one, but TWO local bands and we are very excited. It is going to be the big EP release show for new local band “The Little Death” for their Way Happier EPThe Little Death features members of former Springfield band Fill In The Blank. Also on this show is Springfield alternative rock group – Rockford’s CD release as well. Rockford has also been working on new recordings. The third local rock group we have on this bill to complete that trifecta of sorts is Bottom Bracket. Then there are a couple of touring acts. This includes Bosley Mongo from Chicago. Check out their music streaming on the player below. This also includes the band Sidelined from Newton, Illinois who have been around for a good minute and have played at our space a few times over the years. Opening things up we have HECK which is the solo work of Hannah Songer.

This show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $7. Check out a facebook event for the show right here. Also check out our shows page (we are working on updating) for a list of what else is coming up at Black Sheep this month.

One of downtown Springfield’s music festivals – Legacy of Giving Music Festival is happening this weekend next to the Old State Capitol and a few other various locations downtown. This will be L.O.G. Fest’s second year after taking the place of SOHO Music Festival last year. This year there are sixty bands performing over the course of two days, and proceeds go to various charities.

There are too many bands for us to list out the lineup, but you can see a nice breakdown of which bands are playing which locations at what exact times right here on their facebook for tonight and here for tomorrow night. Actually, you know what, we’ll post that schedule below. This event is all ages, and admission is only $5. If you are going to be at L.O.G. festival and would like to help us flier for Dumb Fest, get in touch! For more info on Legacy of Giving, check out their website right here.
