Starter Jackets: “Decisions”

a4208172421_10.jpg

There is a lot of new Springfield music that has been coming out that we have been trying to keep up with! Here’s a brand new full length album that came out last month  by Springfield pop punk group Starter Jackets. The album is called Decisions and you can find it streaming on the player below. The album was recorded right here in Springfield by Luke McNeil of Capital City Recordings. It is being released on Rad Girlfriend Records based out of Ohio. Head over to the band’s bandcamp page to pay to download the songs.

Starter Jackets will be performing a week from tonight at Bar None downtown along with Bottom Bracket and Evan Mitchell One Man Band. We hear that this might be the physical release show of their album in some form?? You’ll have to stop by the show tonight to find out! (Ages 21+).

We still have a lot of catching up to do, but we are adding this one to the list of Springfield releases for 2018 on our album archive page!

activat4

We felt it worth mentioning that a few days ago we were freshly stocked with the fourth (yes, fourth can you believe it?) issue of Springfield new music magazine “Activator” for September 2018. This issue is packed with interviews, writeups, show calendars, comics and more. Featured on the cover is a piece written by Scott Faingold which serves as a fan memoir to the band Yo La Tengo. Also included is an update on Springfield local hip hop this summer, an interview with local hip hop artist / musician Cornbread, an interview with hip hop artist Meezy Killafield, a guide to Pygmalion Music Festival happening this month in Champaign, a comic drawn by Mike Resigner, and much much more.

Activator can be picked up for free at Dumb Records any day during store hours (noon-8pm).

Here’s an interesting show happening just one week from today at Black Sheep! This one is happening on Monday, September 10th. We just have three acts lined up, and all are great. This show features touring band from Hattiesburg, Mississippi (probably featuring members of some Hattiesburg bands that have stopped through before) – Stellatone. The band plays some “interstellar garage rock” which you can check out for yourself on the player embedded below. Also on this show is a new Springfield punk band “Final Order” which has played a couple of shows thus far. Opening things up is a brand new new Springfield project called Schedule One, we we have been told brings in some great noisy psychadelic madness.

This show will go quick! It starts at 7:00 pm and is just $5. Check out a facebook event for this one right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this fall.

Today we are bringing you a brand new song and video from the new Springfield punk band band MAC – the band has a brand new EP coming out later this fall that they recorded here in Southtown up in the studio with Mike Butler as engineer. The song is called “Authority” and you can find it on the youtube player embedded below. Shots from the video were taken at Black Sheep Fest 2018 which took place last month. The band’s EP is called “No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs.”

The band will be hosting an EP release show at Brewhaus downtown on Saturday, October 6th. More info on that show can be found right here.

To hear what they sound like, check out that player embedded below. Also on this show is Prowess, who literally just played a show here two nights ago (gosh)! Can we get enough Prowess??! Also on this bill is St. Louis emo project “Oversleeping“. Opening things up is the music of Hannah Songer aka “Heck“.

Things start at Black Sheep Saturday at 7:00 pm. Admission for this one is $7. Check out a facebook event for this show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a list of other shows coming up at Black Sheep this fall!

Black Sheep Has An Instagram

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 10.38.27 AM.png

Look-ee here! Here at Black Sheep / Dumb Records headquarters we recently decided to launch a new Instagram page for The Black Sheep. It’s about time we get with the times, right? Before we had lumped all of our content onto the Dumb Records Insta page – and don’t worry that page isn’t going anywhere. We felt that it would be beneficial to launch a more “official” separate page for The Black Sheep to get the word out more about upcoming shows, and also have an Instagram account that is more integrated with this website (which we plan on posting a lot more regularly this month)! Give that new Black Sheep page a “follow” right here. If you are a fan of a lot of “stupid” and/or “dumb” content, don’t forget to check out the Dumb Records twitter page from time to time.

Rockford: “Briarcliff EP”

a2473120146_10.jpg

Okay yes, we are three months late on this one but we are scrambling to get caught up sharing all of this great local Springfield music with you that has been recently coming out!! Earlier this summer Springfield indie/garage rock band Rockford dropped this five-track Briarcliff EP recorded and engineered by Kyle Noonan and Southtown Sound. You can stream those tracks on the player below. Also head over to the band’s bandcamp page where you can download the album at your own price.

Rockford does not have any shows lined up at Black Sheep at the moment, but be on the lookout for some very soon. We are working on still updating our Springfield album archive page to be caught up with 2018 soon, we promise!

September 15th: Black Sheep 13 Year Anniversary Show with The Dixie Narcos, Reaver, Uncle Sam’s Mutagenic Children, Brandon Carnes, Jameson Bullock

bxs13years_2.jpg

Could you believe it, but The Black Sheep is going to finally be a teenager this month. That’s right, two weeks from today on Saturday, September 15th we are celebrating our 13th birthday as a venue and all ages show space in Springfield (the very first show was September 16th, 2005). We have quite the lineup of acts to go along with. This includes Jacksonville-based psychedelic band The Dixie Narcos which you can find streaming on the player below. We are excited for them. We also have Reaver coming from the Alton, IL area, good friends and familiar faces to our space. Before them is the newest two-piece punk / chaos group called “Uncle Sam’s Mutagenic Children“. Wow! At the start of the show we have two solo sets – one is a rare solo set of Brandon Carnes (that’s right, not F///\\\M), and before that a solo set by Jameson Bullock.

All of that starts at 7:00 pm and admission is just $5. Check out a facebook event for that show right here. Also be sure to check out our shows page for a good look at what else is coming up at Black Sheep this fall. Oh! By the way, this show WILL be the drawing for Black Sheep Band Lotto 2018! More info on that will be posted very soon!
