NPR: DIY Music in Springfield

In case you missed the radio segment on Thursday, WUIS has hosted a download of the piece they recently aired about Springfiel’s DIY music scene. Kevin Bradford is interviewed in the expose, along side Jeff Black of the Radon Lounge and Mitch Baker of Lovecow.

Rachel Otwell’s piece touches on the DIY music scene, why it’s important, and what makes it run.

Henry Rollins Visits Springfield

Above is a video of Henry Rollins during his trip to Springfield where he stops by the Lincoln Presidential Museum and talks about his admiration for Abraham Lincoln.  Earlier this month the former vocalist of the band Black Flag performed spoken word at the Hoogland Center as a part of his tour of all capital cities in the U.S.

Bishop On Air also got the chance to interview Henry Rollins around the time of his visit to our capital city.  You can find the full interview here.  In the interview Rollins talks about the purpose behind his tour of the state capitals and more.

Tonight at Black Sheep: Chad Jeffers Memorial Show

Tonight is the Chad Jeffers Memorial show. As a farewell, his friends have gotten together and put this show on in Chad’s memory. It features Springfield legends Pound For Pound, Milwaukee’s New Society of Anarchists, and Decatur’s hard hitting Soy City Strangers. It also features the sponsors Gato Negro Tattoos and No More Victims. The show is $5 with all proceeds going to the Gateway Foundation. It will be starting at 7:00 pm.

You can also check out what other shows we have coming up over on our shows page.

And then on Sunday, we are having a Black Sheep Roundtable Meeting at 7:00 pm.  Didn’t get the chance to help out with changes inside Black Sheep before Hobgob?  That’s okay! Come to the meeting and help us decide which projects to tackle next.

11/5 at Black Sheep: Cottontail, Foxtail, Lovecow, Dream Eater

TONIGHT at Black Sheep: ALL AGES HOBGOBLINSPOOKADELIC 2012

The day is finally here!  Hopefully everyone is finishing up the final touches on those costumes because the Hobgob show is tonight!  We have quite the incredible line up of bands tonight, starting at 7:00 pm for $5.  First up is Say Something, a new project of former members of Don’t Mess With Winkie and a few other Springfield bands.  We are not quite sure what they sound like since this is their first show, but we were told to bring our skanking shoes tonight.  Then The Timmys will be playing their CD release show for their new album “Sangamon County Minefield.”  You can find a song off of the new album here.  Third we have the new band Tiger Tank featuring members of the old Springfield band Park.  Tonight will be the band’s Springfield debut!  And last we have NIL8, the papa bears of the Springfield music scene.  NIL8 will be celebrating 30 YEARS of being a band.

We would also like to mention that a lot of time has been spent in recent weeks to the inside of our space.  The space has been painted, cleaned inside and out, and a few other changes have been made.  Some new artwork has also been added, and we would like to thank the artists involved.  We would like to think of tonight as almost a grand re-opening for Black Sheep (even though we have not been closed).  If you have not been to a show in Springfield for a while, come out!  You might have some fun!

State Journal-Register: “Don’t Trust Anyone Over 30… Unless It’s NIL8”

The State Journal Register has an article in today’s paper about NIL8‘s 30 year anniversary.  The band will be playing their annual all ages Hobgoblinspookadelic show tomorrow at Black Sheep along with the bands Say Something, The Timmys, and Tiger Tank.  From the article:

“Mad professor” might be a more precise metaphor for Williams’ on-stage antics. He responded to this interview through email, and used a lot of exclamation marks and all-caps — and even those can’t keep up with the exuberance in which he approaches his passion for performing live, and living in general.

You can find the full article in today’s A&E section of the SJR or online here.
