May 15th at Black Sheep: Caterpillar Club, Shahman, Sundowning, Mildred

5-15flierfinalLook at that cute flier by Our Lady’s own Molli Squires. That flier is for a almost last minute show at Black Sheep which is only a week from Wednesday! That means you better mark your calendars quick and reschedule your Wednesday night plans for May 15th! For this show we have Caterpillar Club – the shoegaze/sludge project featuring members of Hospital Job, Our Lady, and Soap Scum. They will be joined by a few touring acts. The first is a band on tour from all the way in Ottowa, Canada called Shahman. They play a noisy type of punk/rock stuff and you can find their music below. The second is a new project called Sundowning featuring a member of the band Regret, The Informer from Kansas City, Missouri. Last but not least we have the mysterious and mixed-genre Mildred, who will also be playing a show on Friday.

The show starts off at 7:00 pm and is $5. You can find a facebook event for the show right here. Also don’t forget to check out what other shows we have coming up at Black Sheep over on our shows page.

Roundtable RECAP

On Sunday we had one of our bi-weekly roundtable meetings. It was a rainy day and there weren’t very many of us but that did not stop us from getting stuff done. Here is a list of some of the things that were discussed/some of the things we did:

– Added more gravel to the front door so that water won’t pool up on our doorstep when it rains.
– Put two new bulletin boards up! If you have anything you would like to hang up during shows, (fliers, cards, etc.) then go ahead!
– Organized an official Black Sheep tool box. We are ready to fix stuff.
– Discussed the possibilities of having a Black Sheep distro where we would feature local releases.

You can find some pictures of the roundtable meeting below. Are you interested in coming to the next meeting or doing what you can to help out the Black Sheep community? We just set up a get involved page where you can find out when our next meetings are and see what else you can do! It’s all there!

Videos: Error Records and Skeletal Lightning Fest in Champaign

Today we have a couple of videos to show you of exciting things going on in one of our neighboring cities, Champaign/Urbana. A few months ago we were posting updates on how Champaign’s newest all ages venue/record store Error Records was starting up and taking donations through an Indie Go-Go campaign. Now Error Records has a new video and short documentary up about the launch of the new venue and a little bit on the Champaign/Urbana music scene. In the video you can find short clips from some familiar Champaign bands, interviews with Nathan Landolt and others, and even some glimpses of some Black Sheep fliers.

The second video is a few clips of Skeletal Lightning Fest which took place in Champaign/Urbana on April 5th and April 6th this year. Springfield band Our Lady played the fest along with plenty of other bands from all over the midwest. The clip is also a part of an upcoming DIY documentary/film called Dither: The DIY Sound. The documentary should be coming out sometime in the summer of 2013.

You can find both videos below.

We’ve Got Buttons!

59282_591763064175146_728971623_nHuge, huge news for The Black Sheep community and Springfield music today! (Okay, not really). We now have Black Sheep buttons! Isn’t that great!? You can find the new buttons along with patches, posters, and sometimes stickers at any Black Sheep show. We will be selling them for fifty cents each.

The buttons were made thanks to Pillow Fight Buttons based out of Champaign, Illinois. If you play in a band that is looking to get buttons made they are the ones to get ahold of! Thanks Chloe!

New Features: Get Involved Page

IMG_3264With summer and warmer weather on it’s way, we plan on becoming more active as a venue and all-ages space and we need your help! We have created a new get involved page for the site. You can find the new page if you hover over the “community” tab.

On this new page we have compiled a list of things that we feel anyone can do to help improve our space. The Black Sheep is ran by a community of volunteers and artists and musicians and we could always use more help to benefit our space and community. There is a long list of things on the new page. The main thing we suggest for anyone looking to get more involved is to come out to our bi-weekly roundtable meetings. The next one is actually today at 4:30 pm! Aside from the roundtable meetings, there still is a long list of things we could use help with that you can find on the get involved page. Go check it out!

Skank Skates Calls For Help on New Project

320374_520774501283925_130834802_nFor those of you who are not in the loop with the new project that our neighbors over at Skank Skates are taking on, here are a few updates!

Skank Skates and owner George Sinclair recently announced that Skanks will be building a skatepark in Iles Park sometime in the near future. Planning and preparation for this new park has already begun, and helpers have been working for the past few weekends. Here is Skanks original call for help:

ALERT!!! to everyone who say ” call me if you need any help” heres your call….skanks is trying to build a skatepark in Isles park… we just came across a bunch of free construction wood but we need some hands to help pull the nails that are left in them… this means all you kids that come with no money need to come help! we will be cooking out and anyone to help will get a free meal this will be this Sunday April 28th 1pm

Of course Sunday, April 28th has already passed by now, but Skanks is still working on the project and could probably use some help. If you are looking to help out, you can stay updated on the project by following the Skank Skates facebook page. Or you can come to South Town at almost any time and see what George and the gang are up to! We plan on giving updates throughout the course of this new project until the new park is complete. Skank Skates will also be hosting Dumb Fest along with Black Sheep this summer on June 14th and 15th.
