New Band Pages: Looming

loomingphoto1Today we are bringing you a brand new page for a Springfield band that is so new that they have not even played their first show yet. That band is Looming, which features Mitch Baker, Jess Knight, Brandon Carnes, and Jordan Fein. Members have been active in many other Springfield bands including Lovecow, Mother Leopard, Big Storm, and Our Lady. Also don’t forget to catch Looming play their very first show ever at Black Sheep on Saturday, September 21st along with The Timmys, Skank, and Built In A Day!

A Message from Scott Blacula

It looks like in a special message to us, Springfield metalcore band Scott Blacula has decided to declare war on The Black Sheep Cafe. In a message directed to The Black Sheep (below), Scott Blacula frontman The Pukester tells us that he is fed up with their placement on shows, as well as the band never getting paid a dime. He also says that Scott Blacula’s show on September 4th (Wednesday) will be their last. Check out the full video below:

There you have it, folks. Scott Blacula will be playing their last show as a band on Wednesday. The show starts at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. Also playing the show is Endeavour from Virginia, Hometown Heavyweights, Deviant, and Quincy Curran. You can find a facebook event for that show right here.

Gateway To The West Fest October 18th and 19th in St. Louis

531894_551528768228351_1543499129_nThere are lots of festivals to look forward to in Central Illinois and the Midwest this fall. We told you about Pygmalion Music Festival happening in Champaign at the end of September, and today we are bringing you news of a hardcore festival taking place in St. Louis, Missouri. Of course there are many many festivals that happen every year in St. Louis and Chicago (too many for us to cover)! Some of you might be heading to Riot Fest in Chicago later this month.

The festival we are telling you about today is Gateway To The West Fest, which is happening October 18th and 19th (Friday and Saturday) at the Mad Magician in St. Louis. The festival features two days packed with plenty of hardcore punk bands from across the  country. Some notable acts include Bracewar, Ramallah, Bent Life, Black Teeth (reunion), Rival Mob, as well as many others. For the full lineup you can head over to the Gateway To The West facebook event. For ticket info and pre-orders, you can head over to Springfield-related record label Dog Years Records’s website. Weekend passes are going for $45.00, get them before they sell out! Good Times: “Patience”

Screen shot 2013-08-30 at 7.01.15 PMThe newer Springfield acoustic/folk project of Clint Kesigner of Battalion called Good Times has unveiled a brand new video for one of his songs. The video is for the song “Patience” and you can check it out on youtube here or embedded at the bottom of this post. The song comes from the recently released Good Times EP, which you can find and stream on the Good Times band page right here.

If you like what you are hearing you can see Good Times perform live at Black Sheep on Sunday, September 22nd at Black Sheep. The show will also be with Brandon Carnes, Montagh, and Jess Knight. You can find our original post on that show right here and a facebook event right here.

September 26th at The Radon Lounge: Spoken Nerd, Brian Lee & His Orchestra, Cantalouper, Hushpad

Sept-2013Tomorrow is September! That means there are plenty of great shows coming up in Springfield very soon. Earlier we told you about a bunch of shows coming up soon at Springfield house venue The Radon Lounge. Today we bring you details for a show happening there on Thursday September 26th along with this sweet flier with watermelon on it. The show features Spoken Nerd, who has a cool video with more watermelon embedded at the bottom of this post. The show is also the return of Brian Lee & His Orchestra, who played at The Radon Lounge earlier this year. On tour with Brian Lee is a one-man shoegaze project called Cantalouper! Opening the show up and also playing shoegaze is Hushpad from Lincoln, Illinois.

Tonight at Black Sheep: Cooshit SuperDuperDopeDank Show

Tonight, we have ourselves some special people coming around to bring us some jivvy jams. This fine evening is going to start out with everyone’s least favourite metalcore band Scott Blacula. In their words, “Less silence more violence!” Their music is garbage, but that’s all the more reason to come out and hear it! Get ready to mosh! Habilis Riccardo is going to grace us with a performance as well. It’s going to be real. If you want to know what it is, come find out! We’re going to have plenty of suprises waiting for us and all these folks are definitely going to be worth hearing. Sir Riccardo will be leading into some hip-hop jams by none other than CooShit, the fluid rhyme master. He’s got some fine beats for us, so look forward to grooving to this SuperDuperDankShow! Not only is there going to be a great show, there’s going to be some other stuff going on such as a free shirt giveaway, free candy and a cooking contest! That sounds pretty rad so make sure to come out and check this all out because tonight’s gonna be tight.

Tomorrow on Black Sheep Radio: Hometown Heavyweights

1208642_10201281124264258_477805246_nTomorrow is Friday! That means there is a cool show going on at Black Sheep, and it is also another episode of The Black Sheep Radio Show! Who do we have for our guests on the show this week? Looks like it’s pop-punk band Hometown Heavyweights from all over Central Illinois. Hometown Heavyweights will be playing at Black Sheep very soon on September 4th along with Endevour and Scott Blacula. They will be talking to the radio crew about that show and what other plans they have coming up. We will also be listening to some of their music as well as plenty of other bands local to Springfield.

Black Sheep Radio airs on Fridays (tomorrow) from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. You can tune in at 88.3 WQNA fm or at wqna.org online. Miss an episode? We have them all up for download on our radio page!

 

Tonight at Black Sheep: Wringer, Nephrons, Hospital Job, Kirk Donley

Hey all you fine folks, check out this show tonight to expericence the finest, most heart-warming side of pop-punk you’ll encounter within a 50 mile radius! Allow us to enlighten you. We’ll have Wringer to give us some wholesome, catchy pop-punk tunes. This fine trio is from Bloomington, IN and will be on tour until the end of September. They understand the ethics of a DIY scene, so come out to the show and support them while they’re on tour! We’ll also be featuring the local lovelies who call themselves Nephrons. They put out a new album just recently called Black Bedroom. Go ahead and give them a listen! Their pop-punk music has an alternative, grungy spin to it so look forward to hearing them live– they are sure to play plenty of hits! Hey hey hey, Hospital Job is playing! They’ve returned home to us and are back from tour. You know what else? They’re going to grace us with their upbeat tunes that just make you feel good inside, so look forward to them too. The last set we’ll be featuring tonight holds the clear, acoustic sounds of Sir Kirk Donely. Listening to him will be like taking a breath of fresh air, so make sure to give him a good listen and take in a good deep breath while you’re at it. People don’t take deep breaths enough, I’ll tell you what.

The weather is predicted to be a beautiful clear evening with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees C/ 19 degrees CIf you’re a lover of social networking and all that entails, please do not hesitate to join this event on the book of faces. Also, please check out upcoming shows and be sure not to miss out!

My Dad Added To Show on September 29th

539402_518707391478754_923277751_nToday we bring you some good news and bad news about a show happening at Black Sheep on Sunday, September 29th. We’ll go ahead and get the bad news out of the way first. The bad news is that Sword Swallower from Chicago will no longer be playing the show. Ready for the good news? The good news is that the show will be the return of post-rock/math rock Chicago band My Dad to Black Sheep! You might have remembered My Dad playing at Black Sheep back in February as the band with two drummers. We have some of their songs streaming on the bandcamp player at the bottom of this post.

The show will still feature Springfield emo band Our Lady, Chicago screamo Lord Snow, Peoria/Bloomington band Yusuke, and a new Springfield project called Mystery Gift. Skywalker: “Hunger Consumes The Harvest”

Springfield metal band Skywalker have released a new lyric video for their song “Hunger Consumes The Harvest”. The song comes from the band’s latest album Mind of A Martyr, which was released earlier this year. You can check out that full album and download it for your own price on bandcamp right here. Skywalker will be playing in Springfield next at Black Sheep during The End Is Here Fest. The festival, which we told you about earlier this month features nine heavier bands from in and outside of our area, and it will also be Pound For Pound’s final show.
