The Illinois Times: Best of Springfield 2013

bestofwebgraphic2013It’s that time of year again for Springfield weekly newspaper The Illinois Times! The Illinois Times have started collecting ballots for their Best of Springfield 2013 survey. There are many questions on the survey relating to the “best ofs” in the city of Springfield. This year you can find a very lengthy music and entertainment section with a few questions about your favorite local bands and music venues. If you are having trouble thinking of all the local bands that you want to vote for, you might want to check out our current bands page!

To take the survey, go HERE. You can also fill one out in this and next week’s issue of The Illinois Times and submit it to one of their offices. Voting will end on September 30th. To see the results from last year’s survey, go here.

Tonight at Black Sheep: The Outlook, IAMIAM, Gazeebo, Nick Howells

DIGITAL CAMERAWe have a particularly expressive show for you guys tonight. It’s going to be real! Check it out, here’s what we’ve got: The Outlook is an organization based in Massachusetts and one or a few of their advocates will be giving us some spoken word tonight. Their main concerns focus on human rights, especially when it comes to children and sexual matters. What they have to say will hopefully educate us on the heavier aspects of the darkness in the world as well as inspire us to do something about it! Further on in the evening,Nick Howells will gracing us with some really awesome piano tunes that are thoughtful and heartfelt, so it looks like we’ll have a rad spoken word performance and some simply beautiful piano songs to change things up and freshen our minds this evening. On the noise side of the spectrum we have IAMIAM, which features Austin Connelly of Springfield’s Montagh and Wir Konnen. His set is raw, reflective and brooding so be sure to check it out. Also check out the noise set Gazeebo, which is deliberate and full of honest rage from the depths of the mind. All of these performances are sure to be rewarding so stick around and check them all out!

The show kicks off at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. There’s possibly going to be a potluck so if you plan on coming to this (which you definitely should) bring food so that the “possibly” aspect of this sentence can turn into “definitely”! If you’re curious, go ahead and check out the facebook event. You can also check out our upcoming shows so you know what days to mark on your calendars!

September 25th at Black Sheep: Mutts, Big Storm, Kickstart

IMG_2646Do we have time to sneak on more November show onto our calendar? We think so. On Wednesday, November 25th, just one day after Boom Boom Kid plays an awesome show, we have another great show happening. We have the return of Mutts from Chicago! Mutts played here earlier in the spring. If you if you missed it, you can see in that picture above that Mutts is a little different from the usual rock n’ roll band that you would normally see at Black Sheep. They place a nice mix of blues and lounge music and you can check some of that out on the player below. Also playing the same show will be local feel-good rock band Big Storm! We also have local pop punk rockers Kickstart opening the show for us.

The show will start at 7:00 pm and admission is $5. You can’t find a facebook event or flier for this one. Sorry. If you want you can check out all of our other shows coming up this fall at Black Sheep by going to our shows page. It’s going to be a busy fall at Black Sheep!

Another Message from Scott Blacula

598923_471503599584372_2116088754_nLast week we passed along a message sent to us from the Springfield metalcore wrestling band Scott Blacula. In that message, which you can see here, Scott Blacula expressed their disgust in Black Sheep as a venue among a few other things. They also talked about their show last Wednesday possibly being their last. Today we are bringing you an official statement not from The Pukester, but THE Mr. Scott Blacula himself.

My empire has gone through its share of ups and downs, but over the last year, an endeavor to spread my greatness across the universe has degenerated into crass insults and barbaric displays of rage and ignorance. When I brought the original four jobbers of the IGWF(Inter-Galactic Wrestling Federation) together to form Scott Blacula, I had nothing but the full intentions of this band to speak of my praises, and hopefully become something more substantial than they could have as professional wrestlers. Instead, they continued to dwell on their miserable failure of a past, speaking of nothing other than wrestling. In fact, not a single song written was about me. One song was even focused on someone who was obsessed with a TV Show in which MY GLORY-HOGGING COUNTERPART starred.

I let all of this slide until it became apparent that these fools only cared about their own goals, one of which being to slander my good name after everything I have given them. The Pukester may have taken it upon himself to disband the quartet, but nothing is official until I say so. Matters have gotten too far out of hand, and it is with great pleasure, and miniscule regret, that I hereby fold the band of Scott Blacula. The Pukester, The Undertoker, Jack Swaggerty, and CM Drunk, or Nick Foley, or…whatever the hell he calls himself these days will no longer work under my employ, as I have chosen to end this empire before these peons can do any more damage. The IGWF will be no more, and the members of Scott Blacula will be banished from the cosmos, forced to live menial, unrewarding lives on the stinking heap of trash that is Planet Earth.

Goodbye forever, people of this abhorrent planet. Never forget the majestic name of Scott Blacula, and all that I represented.

-Mr. Scott Blacula

We are not entirely sure how this works out, but we think that it is safe to say that the local metalcore band Scott Blacula is no more. Congratulations Springfield! We have defeated Scott Blacula once and for all!

Scott Blacula did have one more match scheduled before they were ultimately defeated. That was to be against Smoke Coke at The End Is Here Fest on November 9th. Does this mean Smoke Coke automatically wins the match, or will there be some other band to take Scott Blacula’s place to battle it out with them?

Next, we have the locally famous, emotionally-driven, Our Lady. They will going on tour shortly after this show with Ghost Key on November 7th! September 24th at Black Sheep: Boom Boom Kid, Nephrons, Strong Power

boomboom

It looks like another September has popped up on our calendar here at Black Sheep and we are very excited! On Tuesday, September 24th we will be welcoming Boom Boom Kid all the way from Argentina. Wow! Boom Boom Kid is a solo project of sorts of Carlos Rodríguez formerly of the hardcore Argentinean band Fun People. Boom Boom Kid plays a type of punk/pop-punk that is sure to get you bouncing. We are excited to welcome in these Argentinean punks. Also playing the show is Springfield’s own Nephrons who recently put out a new record. This show will also be the first show of a brand new Springfield project called Strong Power. We don’t know anything about the type of music this new band played or who is in it, so we should all be in for a treat!

The show starts at 7:00 pm and costs $5 (so we can help our friends get back to Argentina). You can expect a flier and facebook event sometime soon. In the meantime, check out our shows page for a look at what’s coming up at Black Sheep this fall.

Roundtable Tomorrow At Black Sheep/Help Finding Electricians and Roofing Contractors

tumblr_msd94olfPW1qfyo63o1_1280The fall has come crashing on us here at Black Sheep like a wave of Elmer’s glue. It’s time to surf the wave and take on some new projects! Tomorrow at 1:00 pm we will be hosting our first roundtable meeting of the fall. What happens at our roundtable meetings? Our meetings are a chance for everyone to voice their opinions on how things are ran at Black Sheep and they are an opportunity for us to brainstorm ideas. Remember all of the cool stuff that we got accomplished last fall? The meeting will go from 1:00 to 2:00 pm and everyone is welcome to come. We have some big things coming up this fall including a really cool Halloween show/Hobgob and we want to talk about them! After we are done meeting we will split up into groups and go flier for our upcoming shows around town. Do you have a show coming up in Springfield that you need help promoting? Bring some fliers to the meeting and we will do some flier-trading!

As the fall approaches and the weather is starting to get colder we are pushing to get a better heating and cooling system inside of Black Sheep. We have some things planned for this, but right now we need you help! We are looking for any electricians or roofing contractors that would be able to get us an estimate on a project for us this fall. If you know of any electricians or roofing contractors then please get ahold of us! Shoot us an email at blacksheepspringfield@gmail.com.

If you can’t make it to the meeting at 1:00 tomorrow, don’t worry! We plan on continuing to have our roundtable meetings every other week. If you have trouble making it to the meetings there is still plenty more that you can do to get involved. To find out more about that, check out our get involved page!
