Project Southtown Update 1.1

IMG_2023

Welcome to the very first of hopefully many monthly updates on Project Southtown – a new revitalization effort for our corner of the world located at 11th and South Grand streets in Springfield.

This past month the Project Southtown Kickstarter campaign ended with a successful $7,100+ raised. Yesterday we held an open Black Sheep roundtable meeting to talk about some immediate projects we felt need to be taken on to get the ball rolling on Project Southtown and many more projects to come. Some of those immediate projects included:

– Prepping the recently demolished wall on the side of Dumb Records (pictured above) and getting ready for a new Southtown mural.
– Purchasing new outdoor ashtrays to use instead of buckets to clean up cigarette butts.
– Purchasing new woodchips to go underneath benches behind Black Sheep.
– Building new signage for the front of Dumb Records.
– Purchasing a bike rack for public use.
– A tab on our site for Project Southtown (a separate site will come later).

We agreed on having a workday to start prepping the wall (pictured above) this upcoming Saturday. We plan on being outside working from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and there will also be a vegan potluck at 3:00 pm, so anyone is welcome to come out and help us work, and enjoy some free food!

Incentives for Project Southtown are also already being gathered and shipped out. We will be contacting individual donors this month to hunt down shirt sizes, and Brian Galecki is still working up a t-shirt design for Project Southtown.

Digitizing of the Skank Skates VHS tapes are already underway, with one full half hour clip already done and up online right here. Other clips are also being worked on, as well as a website where we can host all of the video tapes in an organized fashion. Some paperwork has also already been submitted for Project Southtown’s new non-for-profit status- a process which may still take up to six months to go through. However while we are waiting for that the project will still be continuing at full speed.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 1.02.41 PM

Some people behind the skating end of Southtown are doing cool things. The Southtown skate shop located just right above Dumb Records, Boof City Skate Shop, has recently been featured on the newer Springfield focused podcast- Lincoln’s Legends Podcast. Collin Eigenmann of Boof City spoke with Jeremie Bailey of Lincoln’s Legends about the shop, skateboarding, and upcoming projects in the Skanks and Boof City skate community. Collin is also currently working on starting up a new skate park outside at Iles Park (located at 5th and Ash streets). Check out the two-hour long podcast to hear more about that project as well as plenty of other things going on in the Springfield skate scene.

11696524_10155820061580512_1793873541487494219_oThere are still plenty of big shows being announced at Black Sheep this summer! On Friday, August 14th Black Sheep will be hosting the LP release show for Looming and their new album Nailbiter coming out on No Sleep Records. Get a sneak peak of a song from the new album here. This is a very exciting show for Looming, and also exciting because also taking the stage for this show at Black Sheep is Park– an older Springfield emo band that announced their reunion on our radio show a few years back. This will be Park’s first time playing Black Sheep since reuniting. Check out some of their music streaming below. In addition to those two bands this show will also feature Choir Vandals from St. Louis and also Hidden Hospitals from Chicago.

This show will start at 7:00 pm, and tickets will go up on sale soon for $8 in advance. Admission the day of the show will be $10. Find a facebook event for this show right here. Also check out our shows page for a look at everything that is coming up at Black Sheep this summer.

For this show you can expect a performance by Springfield’s Pyscho Fight, as well as The Timmys who are also playing Black Sheep Fest on July 25th. Also playing is the local rock group Jukebox Casanova.

The flier lists the event as happening from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am. Brewhaus Bar is located at 617 E. Washington, and this show is likely for ages 21 and up. Check out our Springfield shows page.
